This is a great breakdown of hip hop in 99. He didn't just focus on the big names but the entire landscape of hip hop. Every region East& west coast, and the south top to bottom.

I'm starting to be convinced that every year was the best year for hip-hop until the 2010s, each year I say hell yeah classic year for different reasons than before. Just proves that if you do it right all of it is memorable. For me it only goes down after Soulja Boy enters and I still like the period but its the first year that I feel like I could do this myself and I think a lot of people today made that switch around the same time

Regardless of what others may think, I will always give credit and respect to EMINEM for shattering the 'Vanilla Ice' curse for good. After him there was/is no excuse for a white rapper to be corny. Plus, he didn't try to be something he wasn't to fit in.

    • @dredocs

I 100% agree with you. When Eminem came out people gave him respect there's a lot of revisionist history on him now.

    Gratitude for sharing.
1999 was an interesting year in general not just for music.
Things Fall Apart, Black on Both Sides ,I Am, Thugged Out, The Art of Story Telling, Beneath The Surface, Murdah Muzik, Blackout, N****a Please, Uncontrolled Substance, Internal Affairs and Full Clip and Still I Rise, are stellar albums to me.
That Missy, Eve And DMX were cool.
Some underground classics dropped that year as well i.e MF DOOM and Living Legends(UHB lV). The Grouch. CMA (The Grouch and PSC)
Nas 's I Am... was supposed to be a double album called I Am… The Autobiography.
I swear That ODB song Recognize has the same production as Jay Z's Give It To Me.
That Raekwon song ft Masta Killa is a classic. U God Pleasure and Pain is a classic.Mac Dre Fish Head Stew is a classic. Kuruot I Call Shots is a classic too.
I know its not cool to commit domestic violence or make songs about killing your child's mother or father, however I cant lie that Eminem song 97 Bonnie and Clyde was heavy.
I just recalled that Jill Scott wrote that You Got Me song which featured Eve and I think it won a Grammy.

Loving this series even though 1999 was probably my least favorite year of the 90’s. It might be due to my age though. Even though Rapper’s Delight was arguably the biggest impact ever made on rap/hip-hop music, it’s easy to forget that the realest rappers in NYC didn’t think much of it during its time. The lyrics and music wasn’t even original. It’s funny when I think about it, because I’m always about originality and never copying the next person. But since Rapper’s Delight, it has been the same successful trend in this genre that I both love and hate. Is what it is. But real recognize real.
Oh, and SB2 is the greatest mixtape EVER MADE. Made the greatest DJs on the planet.

99 was a good year IMO and some solid albums dropped (Mobb, The Roots, Gza, Dre's 2001) but it's not the best year nor even top 5 in the 90s (93,94,95,96 and 98 were better). The whole 90s pretty much were nice though but they started to tail off at the end.
Some of these albums are some of the artists worst as well IMO from Nas (Nastradamus) to Goodie Mob (World Party), Ol Diry N&*ga Please and a few more, some very average albums by great artists in 99. Ma$e double up album sucked as well and a few others, just some serious misses that year. Noreaga's Melvin Flynt also was not near his debut album.
