Green Friday - Abdal Hakim Murad: Friday Sermon

  • Friday is a day of great historical and religious significance in Islamic tradition, as Allah makes clear in the Qur’an. As such, the yearly consumer event of “Black” Friday - variants of which have been adopted throughout the world - is, then, both a misnomer as well as antithetical to the forgotten religious festivals that it seems to have replaced. This frenzied celebration of consumption is observably destroying the planet. In contrast, the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was that of deep consideration for the earth’s environment and the animals that live here alongside us. Only through following his example can we begin to restore the perfect balance of creation that we have disrupted due to our unquenchable greed for worldly possessions that will not accompany us to the hereafter.

There's also hadiths on conserving water and planting trees:
"There is none amongst the Muslims who plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, but is regarded as a charitable gift”. - Bukhari
"The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by Sa’d while he was performing ablution. The Prophet said, “What is this extravagance?” Sa’d said, “Is there extravagance with water in ablution?” The Prophet said, “Yes, even if you were on the banks of a flowing river.”

I wish I could say more than just a simple "Thank you" to the video team for yet again presenting us (me) another one of your beautiful production.
As soon as I thought a new khutbah from CCM would be uploaded on my timezone, I clicked on it and saw the title was "Green Friday".
And what a thematic introduction indeed! The rich emerald green long pointed leaves basking in the sun. The green soothed me immediately. And Allahuakbar! Thank you for zooming on the ladybird. It seemed to know that a camera was pointed at it as it showed off its spreading of wings.
The shadows of water fountain dancing on the ground, the soft undulating water ripples followed by the small water bubbles, your zooming on the fountain, as if it were a lower part of a gorgeous pumpkin and the water trailing down each curvature slowly - it soothed my troubles here where I live amidst concrete bricks and grey, troubled skies.
and the breathtaking silver, glittering waters on the ground, broken by light into jagged, hexagone-like patterns - well, that was the part that made me tear up.
because I am going through something that made me feel like jagged, broken shards - yet when I saw how the waters were broken by light into something that made it more beautiful, that, well, that gave me hope.
"In the driest, whitest stretch of pain's infinite desert, I lost my sanity and found this Rose," - Rumi
thank you CCM video team for helping me find my Rose.
and thank you, beloved Sheikh Hakim for such a profound khutbah, bless all of you, Ameen

Amazing that the Qur'an states that Allah CREATED the universe then ascended to His throne - laws of conservation of mass and energy state that none has been created since the Big Bang - and also states that Allah EXPANDS the universe, present tense - space expands faster than the speed of light. Just two of many miracles in the Qur'an.

Thanksgiving was a feast where the Puritans invited the Iriqouis to dinner to celebrate peaceful coexistence between the Wampanoag and the Puritan settlers. Thanksgiving as a day had nothing to do with Columbus or his exploits as the Puritans had nothing to do with the aristocrstic families of England, Spain or Italy. Conflating Thanksgiving and the shenanigans of Columbus - events which occurred almost 2000miles away on the island chain of Hispaniola- is like conflating the exploits of Napolean with the Turkish invasion of Romania. These events simply have nothing to do with each other and with all due respect Imam, while you may be entitled to your own opinion of history you are not entitled to your own facts.
I understand the point you were trying to make about Black Friday's naming convention being the satanic worship of materialism. You are correct, but we need to communicate our ideas in a way which is respectful to others. You do not need to denigrate my devoutly Christians ancestors- who have nothing to do with anything apart from trying to escape the rule of the heathen kings of England and France. The Muslims have more in common with Puritans than they do with the Communists who's talking points about "muh indigenous peoples" you just cited Imam.
