Understanding the meaning behind 'Kill the boer' song | Afternoon Drive with John Maytham

- The EFF's 10-year anniversary celebrations continue to make headlines.
The country's third-largest party recently celebrated 10 years since its formation, but once again, Julius Malema is in the hot seat.
At the event, Malema and his followers sing 'Kill the Boer - Kill the Farmer', which is causing an uproar.
While the song isn't considered hate speech following a 2022 case, it is considered by many as provocative, and incites violence.
Political analyst Mtinka Ongama weighs in on the debate around the singing of the controversial struggle song, and whether it's appropriate to sing in past-apartheid South Africa.
This interview originally aired on 1 August 2023.

The issue with the song is, it is:
a) not the only struggle song, others exist
b) intentionally inflammatory, and regardless of historical context it is being sung today, where the historical context is not relevant.
The arguments of the "boer" in the song representing the system is a laughable excuse when the song includes mock gunshot noises and our friends in the red overalls are making mock pistols with their hands. The lyric "shoot to kill" also makes the arguments of the song being symbolic ludicrous.
In a polite society where we view our countrymen as equals, I think it would be a very small ask to say, could you please choose a different struggle song that doesn't invoke fairly explicit violence (again, finger guns and "shoot to kill"). And I would argue that anyone with good intentions would make that accommodation without even being asked.
Julius knows what he's doing, he knows he's making people scared for their lives and their futures by stoking this fire, but he does it anyway. Because as him and his party have made very clear over the years, white people do not belong in SA.
Mix in his greatest hits, comments like "We are not calling for the slaughter of white people. At least for now", and you have a very clear message. And that message is, we can't kill white people right now, but boy do we want to. Now, people seem to love to argue he's just being provocative and doesn't mean it. But he certainly doesn't explicitly denounce the idea, and that means, similar to most extremist figures throughout the world, he's perfectly happy to have his supporters believe him.
So you have a man that believes, or presents himself as believing, that white people are to blame for every issue pre and post apartheid, white people are secretly ruling the country (which is a delusional, "The Jews did 911" level conspiracy), they don't belong in SA, they don't deserve land rights, and to top it off he has openly and publicly implied that the possibility of slaughtering them might be there in future, but he sings "kill the boer" simply as a symbolic gesture to the "struggle". Sure.
If you think that is appropriate in any supposedly civil society, I really don't know what to say. I can fully acknowledge that at the time the song was sung historically, it was justifiable. But today it's just used to create fear and stoke division. And Malema knows this.
The cherry on top is the fact that people are basically dead-set on gaslighting people concerned about the constant rhetorical escalations into thinking that they're just sensitive or they're somehow just proving that the accusations are correct by being scared. No, if somebody sings a song about murdering your ethnic group, regardless of how it's justified, it's always going to be scary.
It's like humans have learned nothing from our history.
My guy, you are being hysterical about absolutely nothing. This is just a struggle song, even during the height of apartheid it never resulted in the mass killing of white people so please just stop playing into the hands of illiterate politicians like Steenhuizen who is deliberately playing the good old swaart gevaar card to whip up white emotions.
South Africa is a generally violent country and this has absolutely nothing to do with one's colour of skin, in fact I argue that black and coloured people are more prone to be affected negatively by violence than whites and Indians for obvious reasons.
Where was this fake outrage by the DA when two black teenagers were assaulted at a holiday resort by fully grown white men last year? Where was the DA 's fake outrage when black people were killed en masse during the looting incidences in Phoenix? In fact the DA congratulated the killers for defending their property even before any investigations were made?
The problem with white South Africans is that most are politically illiterate. There is absolutely no attempt to understand political nuances and as a result parties like the DA know exactly which buttons to press to get a reaction out of you. The ANC is exactly the same with black people but finally it seems black people are awakening to this abuse. It's time white people wake up. South Africa needs to change for the better. We just cannot carry on like this and you know it.
I just wish all racist white people can get on with the business of migrating so that only those who are truly willing to build this country remain. Just leave please...
If we have learned anything from History it is that we have learned nothing from History.
Lol, if the song had any literal basis the white minority would be wiped out over night. We not up against spears anymore. Stop fear mongering. The majority does not even take EFF seriously.
Well put. Fully agree.
Shorten your sentences. There is nothing wrong with singing freedom songs. It is part of their history.

If a Steve Hofmeyer sang a song about killing black people at an Afriforum rally, what would everyone say. Words have power. The hand gestures give me chills and ask Rwanda about their radio stations.
This is sowing seeds of violence, end of story. Not okay for any of this. We should not entertain any form of division a country.
We have been democratic for almost 30 years. Who is to blame for grievances and government failures.

Well, the contexts are not the same. And you know everything is context.
Has Steve been singing these songs before?
Has Steve been in any struggle of such before?
On the other hand. Blacks have sung songs in all their lives. That’s how God made them. And they defeat their enemies through these songs by keeping morale up in the face of daunting opposition.
Eg, Apartheid, Slavery and even personal battles.
So Steve’s song will be read differently than Malema’s Song at their EFF event.
It I tell you blacks will not care. I also understand your fear cos you are so few in number.
Malema has white friendships mind you. Why don’t you people find out from these ones what type of a person he is?
Malema is a Straight shooter. Not like ramaphosa or any of those warped anc benchers.

That's because these farmers are hiring illegal foreigners for cheap labour

But I suppose hate speech is only tolerated coming from one side!
By hate speech are you referring to the “Kill the Boer” song? So you are above the equality court? After they deemed the song as not hate speech, here you are.
This discussion reminds me of the woke world we are in when we ask the question: What is a Woman ? and so many definitions pop up these days. We should not beat around the bush words are powerful, it means what it says: Kill the Boer and should not be sung in these times in South Africa

According to Afri forum on For 2022, they were able to verify 333 attacks (including 50 murders). It should be noted that the number of attacks could be much higher because of the underreporting of crime to the SAPD. In a population with Youth unemployment rate in (in 2022) of 51.52 percent, the youth unemployment rate thereby reached its highest value in the observed period. (According to stats SA)
What is referred to as genocide is home invasions, the media then riles up the people into a frenzy

We're not saying killing the people but we're not free, we're farmers today l am black African, please be calm please
I agree with Dr Ongama. There are some messages and songs that may have had relevance in the past and in this specific case may not be intended as a literal call to murder, BUT, irrespective of the intention, how does one measure the effect of such a song being sung at a political rally? When reasonable people discuss the intentions and symbolism on a talk radio show or in a court, it’s all rather benign, but what about when a group of men get drunk in a tavern and go and kill someone because of it,then what? How do we know or measure that nobody will be killed because of it? If people are killed because of it, how many deaths are acceptable? I sincerely question the divisive motives of the EFF. Malema and his ilk have proven time and again that their modus operandi is one of racism and hate, and they have proven that nation-building is not in their interest. This song is tasteless, and in the political culture in South Africa today it should find no home other than a dustbin. If Malema wants to sing songs about lack of progress and oppression, let him make new songs about the ANC government. Let him sing about state capture and corruption and about black oppressors. That’s where his people’s problems lie. And as for remaining racist whites, get a grip, grow up and stop providing ammunition to politicians through your stupidity! Every time you say something nasty about black people, not only do you damage this country and hurt its people, but you create space for radicals like Malema to breathe and thrive. Grow up the lot of you. South Africa has so much potential if we can stamp out racism and stupidity from people who should know better.
Dr Ongama is confused, this issue was settled by the courts and found Malema not guilty, he must watch the hearing
Do I hear another white person compromising with Malema in the song Kill the Farmer kill the Boer. The song may not say kill an individual but clearly sends a message that black people must kill the boer or the farmer. Malema is a polarising person, a person who seethes hatred. He cannot lead our country while having such a dangerous mindset which influences his followers. He may not think that what he says may influence genocide but his follows may think it and take it further. How many more farm murders must take place before SA find peace. Does Malema ever consider the economic effects his words have on the economy. South Africa is already begging Ukraine and Russia for grain yet both countries are at war with each other. If Farmers in South Africa were allowed to do what they do best and that is provide food for the country without any threat of violence over their heads perhaps we would be in a better position. I am annoyed by people who take such threats lightly just because they are lucky to still be alive.
What will happen to say a white sings kill the blacks we will be arested ...double standards is the law
Boer farmer is all whites. It's a struggle song and implies every white in the country
😂😂😂 Stop to be coward come to our township and hear what kind of the song we sing 😂😂😂 as black people we sing what we feel to sing when we're happy
Those were oppressors
like he says. If we are to build a new South Africa, then relics of the past need to be dropped, pulled down etc.... A song which IS being sung purely to agitate and intimidate should have no place in South Africa, much like the old apartheid flag.
Agreed. Either both the flag and the song are accepted, or both are rejected
@@JG-jn6zc yup and should be the latter , but people seem hell bent on hate, both would never drop any of that
There is one problem. Before we can move forward as one without friction we need to accept how we got here. We need to address issues of the past to level the field.
The problem is that black people are asked to move forward as if the field is already level. For any dialogue and efforts to happen to level the field then the past must be remembered.
Until the field is level, it is hypocritical to ask the disadvantaged to put the past in the past. The past haunts us today. It will continue to do so into the future unless it is addressed.
It just happens that the loudest people are either on the winning side or have never seen with their own eyes what the evil of apartheid has done to innocent people.
These white people are racist Mani
you benefit from apartheid as a white south african. and black AFRICANS are treated like second class citizens in their land. deal with it.
So the statues of Queen Victoria, Cecil Rhodes, King Leopold are part of South Africa's heritage and were removed. But this song's heritage can stay?
So should we respect heritage or not here??? Or is that song not heritage and it's words to be taken as a song of struggle right now?
The Hypocrisy is ridiculous.

john there are so many farmers killed everyday to instigate it any further not so nice in the name of politics you can murder that old toppie farmer and family and they are not brought to book with over seventy murders per day in SA the police do not have the time to handle these cases
Yes, the song is disturbing especially at this time and age, but i think it's just a "mzabalazo" song which is harmless. Nevertheless, it is no longer needed, let's put it behind us and work in reconciling this country into a peaceful one.
Amen. My question is what if whites started singing kill the black man, kill the communists? I agree with you buddy.
'Disturbing' is a bit of an understatement. And to assume that something that LITERALLY says 'kill the farmer' is harmless, is crazy! There are millions of ppl in SA. It only takes one person believing this to go out and commit a 'farm killing'. To you, who I suspect is an independent thinker, it may be word salad. But the stakes are too high to make that assumption for millions of others.
It isnt stop reaching and screaming ghosts.
I agree completely with Mtinka. Even though we know the song doesn't call for genocide a lot of South Africans regardless of race feel uncomfortable when hearing it. Malemas followers are largely Lesotho a d Zimbabwe why do they have votes here in SA? How is it possible that tax payers fund him... This is a DA problem and you can see it in the infighting within the DA itself.
Whites won't tolerate this another year, we won't. Cape Town whites are doing noone any favours by voting a DA when they should have long ago abandoned them and joined White South Africa with the FF+...
The problem is not Julius Malema, BUT the unwillingness of our "white" countrymen to share the wealth of this beloved beautiful country, South Africa with other races and the failure of the government to transform the economy that results in fraud characters to pop out using the misfortunes of our nation to their ulterior agenda. Such slogans of the past will resurface only because the environment is conducive... #You_can_disagree_with_me_at_your_own_peril🤷🏾
Some people - even learned people - have extreme difficulty in understanding the meaning of the words "kill" and "boer". They research far and wide to try and find these meanings, even applying extreme stretches of imagination and poetic license.
It’s a terrible song. No one with clean intentions to unite the country would dare to sing it. My irritation is that this was calculated by Malema that this would be the outcome if he sang it in that occasion and we falling to the trap. Julius knows he won’t get white vote and so his intention is to divide those who view none racialism as an objective and have black vote going to him.

As you remember your trauma, understand the trauma that the blacks have felt over the centuries, still feeling when your ilk refuses to hand over the land (Land, mineral resources, banks ) to the black masses who are in greater numbers than the whites.

As long as you guys aren't dealing with issues that are affecting ALL SAns not only Boers you'll win this battle. How many things Boers are still doing and saying that were 'Right' then even when they knew they were Wrong but here a song us being sang ppl are out discussing. Old SAn flag means what? Boers are carrying it around and chanting and nothing happens. Old ppl with sugar coating, lying to each other instead of telling it as is MNX
You clearly have not lost family members to being murdered!!!
And blacks haven't?
Peace without justice
Imagine this nonsense 😢😢
nah i fucking love it go EFF agitate organize and make change! SA is the most unequal country in the world the song is about freedom and liberation. tired of all these free speech warriors crying about anyone else using that right
Division and distrust.. This is all a political party like the EFF will ever bring to the people of this country.
They have one game plan and this is to keep a few of the EFF members in positions of wealth and comfort .
Any publicity is good publicity and they take what they can get
This chant means the system which the ANC government, never change, because we changed the jockey but the horse is still the same.
In apartheid times Boer meant "boere" amaBhunu or the police as representing the system. Not farmers. The struggle was not about a killing spree of farmers -and in a post democracy SA - weaponising the song for that reinterpretation is very problematic. It isn't even being sung in the struggle way
Google the word boer, the dictionary tells us what it says not what people think it means 🤷
Except.... they are not singing this in the apartheid times, are they? They are singing it today. What are we meant to glean from that? You have somehow miraculously erased context/time/era from your rationale here.
Don't be detached. Every person in SA knows boer refers to white people
Lol I'm black and I know this song was used to create hatred towards whites especially Afrikaaners... I can't believe you believe fall for the wrong explanation given by Malema and his fixers
We don't believe it at all, when the so g was created whites were farming and rural... Only Britain and Holland had jobs in offices thank you for being honest we know South Africans black community are not what Lesotho or Ngunis are...
But I can tell you Julius is going to get the war he is begging for... Noone is scared, at best we trying to avoid bloodshed, and that Nguni doesn't listen
This song is against the colonizer who took their land
Thank you Timer, this song is not encouraging violence at all as the court ruled
John Maytham..... WAKE UP !
I admit, I saw this on a different platform, and rushed to TH-cam to see the comments.
SA used to be a beacon of hope and progress in Africa dur8mg Mandela reign. What happened in the last decades, destroyed it. No entrepeneur will ever consider starting its venture there. Maybe only Capetown simce it is not ruled by ANC, but with no long future.
We remind ourselves kf the times youbwere oppressing us so we will sing the song
The problem comes when people think boers and farmers are only whites people.
Maybe I’m the only one who doesn’t understand what the meaning of a boer and farmer.
Julius is talking of white people not blacks or was this song also refer to black people when it was sung in the past?
JULIUS MALEMA💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🤜🏾🤛🏾🤜🏾🤛🏾🤜🏾🤛🏾🤜🏾🤛🏾🤜🏾🤛🏾
The radio presenters should speak up for the citizens of the country don't sit behind a mike and take the government side have backbone stand uo for the people
Who can incite violence in a celebration?
Yikes! Canceling our October group trip to SA. We'll lose lots of money, but that's better than losing our white lives.😮😮😮
Who cares?
😂
Just disappointed on Ongama's bais
Nooo! now I know what John Maytham look like. He looked very diffident in my mind.
History can never be totally eradicated... do to people what you would want them to do to you... The French are facing backlash of their evils in Niger and other West Africa.
wait ... i have to watch a 5min video of "what the meaning is " jesus people have nothing to talk about 😂
Ongama Don't sell your soul, this is nonsense know the difference between song and chant! Ramaphosa is a song but struggle chant can be song or chant, that is a struggle chant.
"I don't think..."
Well, there's your problem right there. You don't think.
I agree with John.. Eminem sang a song about Trump and there was no outcry and even Trump didn't complain
The state has a monopoly on violence and Trump was the representative of the state. That's why calling for violence on him is moot because what damage could Eminem do to the state.
The same applied for Apartheid era state, it was the boer. An Afrikaner nationalist government. The moment that changed, the context of the song changed. Now it's attacking a minority group with no institutional power.
Whites do hold a large amount financial power in the private sector but it's not equally spread between them, it's highly concentrated amongst a fairly small percentage.
Africa and Africans shall rise.
Government aka the System should be challenged
But leave the word Kill out of everything!
Capitalism created this, but what blacks are calling for is for state to own everything. White culture has never lived that way and never will, they work for us we don't work for state! Blacks have never had property rights, never paid taxes, never built civilizations.
When Julius speaks of nationalisation it means whites building and slavi g while blacks pick and choose who oppressed us. Liberals treated lacks like second class humana, all conservatives did was stuck to ourselves and were forced into national service jobs!
that is your personal opinion. Others have their personal opinion, so why express yours??
The solution is economic and returning of the Land!
💯 To u mr dj
It means what it means " kill the boer"
This black analysts signing for supper but the host not taking ot
true...
This is one time that i do not agree with Dr Ongama's observations or assertion on this subject matter.
of course you don't.
Ok then lets just change the word boer to some other culture and let them sing that lets se if the left mouth pice wil aprove
This isn't a 'left' issue, though. I would consider myself 'liberal' but at the same time agree that there is literally no defending this song/intention.
That song and it’s history is what makes it a struggle song. Your idea is quite irrelevant.
Song is divisive, keeping us in the past..lives not transformed how exactly? The onus now is on each individual, govt gave RDP houses, healthcare free education social grants ..the healing work now is for the individual, your choice and responsibility..can't keep scapegoating apartheid, weve been freed, time to grow up..can't shy away from the hard things anymore cos blaming is easy...
What system of oppression exists today?
What law can John point to that exposes a system?
Why not just say "Kill the poverty!"
Julius' friends are not white. Are you aware that there are different tribes and races that have what is classified as "white skin?" Also the Cabal brings in segregation laws everywhere they go not the ordinary citizens.
Dont say that black people are the only ones with a struggle. Segregation laws were brought in by the British rule. They are also Arian and a different race with a white skin. Are you even aware of the millions of white slaves that have been sold these past 1000 years? Are you also aware that black Americans were the first to import black slaves into the USA? Refer here to Candice Owens, who is black she exposes it. So does Thomas Sowell who is also black.
Cape Talk 567 Home of the Woke.
He's not interested in us all moving forward together sadly
Moving forward together means sharing everything white people has ill gotten. Can you share what your evil forefathers stole from the natives? My guess is as good as mine. So don’t talk about moving forward as we blacks have no future to go to.
