    I look at it knowing Bradly Cooper put his heart and soul in the movie. Acting was superb--it came from his heart. Carey Mulligan was wonderful also. Just a comment from me.

    Days later I am still pondering this movie. Not only was it a visual feast and the actors portrayals were amazing, it really captured the angst and deep disappointments that happen to someone who marries a spouse who is struggling with their sexuality. Cancer is often a stress disease.

      That's true ..as a oncologist I have sadly seen this.The patient especially women who going through divorce or marriage problems..same treatment and they are stage 2 but due to the external factors mostly uncaring , unsupportive spouse,money issues, children they just give up and their bodies give up.Its very sad cause they re miracles when they in stage 4 and I'm crying cause I feel a family member is dying..then suddenly they get better..this cases I notice they have support ,love prayer..it's amazing what the strength of love can do for human spirit and the body.

    Very good review and well stated. As a classical music lover and having many of Bernstein recordings, especially his Mahler symphonies, I was disappointed in that the focus was less on his music and more on his personal life.
    The final scene of the last movement of Mahler’s Resurrection symphony was so moving it brought tears to my eyes. I guess this is what I was hoping the movie had more of.
    For what it portrayed it was still a good movie with great acting.

    Bernstein's story is really not that interesting? What?! One of the most iconic musical figures of the last century. Ely Cathedral is a very important piece. And the end pulls things together with the argument between Felicia and Lenny at the Dakota apartment with the Macy's Day Parade in the background was amazing in so many ways.

    • @MovieMuseOfficial
      @MovieMuseOfficial  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I said "arguably," not "really." It's open to interpretation and worth talking about. I phrased it this way because there were definitely interesting parts of his story, but some of his experiences we see in this movie are pretty common. This is nowhere close to being the first story about someone having marital issues, following off the wagon, indulging in drugs, and then piecing things together.

    • @debradominiakrinck6699
      @debradominiakrinck6699 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      True. so many supremely talented artists succumb to addiction and marital issues. No surprise. But. I do believe their relationship was very interesting, rich and unique. I think the effort is trying to show the depth and conflict in their relationship. My concept of the film is holding two conflicting realities. First, relational. As he holds the fluidity of his sexuality and his relationship with his wife and family. Secondly, the internal conflict he felt as an artist in expressing his unique gifts. I think he felt his composing was his greatest gift and his time conducting/teaching, etc led him away from that at times. If you are trying to wrap your head around his genius, realize that he is conducting the Mahler Symphony totally by memory without any score. The clips they have online of him conducting the exact piece that was represented in the film show no score in front of him.

    • @MovieMuseOfficial
      @MovieMuseOfficial  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @debradominiakrinck6699 Those are great points. There's definitely a lot more to his story that isn't explicitly said. I do think that there were some missed opportunities to delve deeper into his personal struggles with his sexuality and his marriage. Correct me if I'm wrong, but outside of his big argument with Felicia, I don't recall much of him really talking about his relations with men during his marriage, if at all.

    Great work man! Really insightful review and impressive editing. And I agree how this is a film for cinephiles and also how the end stagnates a bit after what is mostly a great film. I felt after the epic conducting climax of the Mahler piece, it was a little too drawn out on the jarring change in pace. I enjoyed the film otherwise though, and on a positive, I think both Bradley and Carey will definitely get nominated.

    Thanks for a well-written and very engaging review. I haven't seen the film and, as a fan of Bernstein's music, was hoping it was worth seeing. Your review is a subtle nudge, not an enthusiastic shove, so honestly I'm still not sure. Based on what you said, I'm curious if the film would've benefitted from a greater focus on Bernstein's music. Even if you thought his personal life couldn't carry an entire story, his music certainly could. Yes, I want a peek into the man and the marriage, but there's a reason this film is called "Maestro", and not "Hubby".

    This great romance in the beginning of the film? Wasn't it true that she knew he was gay before they got married? That they broke off their engagement and that she only circled back to him after her relationship with Richard Hart ended when he died? Was she more of a friend, supporter, confidante - and beard - than a wife? I don't know the answers but I've seen these suggested outside the film. This film was, uh, hazy on these points.

  • @ericamacs3875
    @ericamacs3875 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I felt like Cooper was kind of desperate with this performance, it was too much. The prosthetics also looked bad IMO. Carey Mulligan was great, agreed.
    I think in the beginning though, he seemed quite upset, and I had to go read up on it to learn that he did want to live openly as a gay man and then decided to get married, after asking Aaron Copeland for advice, and he said to him ok I guess I'll marry her..
    The film just had vague references to him and that handsome guy he is with being upset, but none of it is clear at all.
    I felt like I was learning nothing about Bernstein. There could have been more about living in the closet for the sake of a career, maybe too close to home for Hollywood.
    Or make it more about his career.
    Imagine if at the end they'd shown the Berlin concert after the wall fell. Much more interesting.

  • @JoshAragon
    @JoshAragon 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The movie starts of well and you are correct about the good use of black and white - but the film or Cooper really is not interested in dealing with Bernstein gay romances they are push to the back ground- Matt Bomer's role should have been longer - it would have been interesting to see him at a later stage - its not a bad film but could have been better if it had been more honest - yes this was a story about a marriage but its also about a gay man

    The analysis are interesting and add to the film. BC went in many directions trying to capture an interesting? Complex? Man! Biopics are always challenging because they see almost everything through the eyes of the people who have complex agendas - often benign but they muddy the water. Did BC want to tell us a love story? Of a man, woman their survival in closeted times? Or a creative, fun, loving dad and husband? Or the music? Or is this a movie about a wife who thinks she can cope with affairs - but can’t but also wants to remain in the centre of the whirlpool that was? LB.
    As a boomer I was interested in his creative choices - but of course want to know the goss! Maestro barely touches anything maybe! How would I know? I also have a vision of LB in my head - so?????

      I don't think BC fully understood Bernstein before making this attempt to accurately portray the maestro. His conducting of Mahler's 2nd wasn't as fun to watch because it was all out of sync. It was very awkward and Lenny would really have a big problem with it if he had seen it.

    Bradley should have just portrayed Herbert Von Karajan because the nose job made him look more like the other maestro. And he didn't spend time to emulate Bernstein conducting style. His part where he did Mahler's 2nd Symphony Finale looked quite awkward and very out of sync. I'm an avid Bernstein fanatic and the way this movie treated his real artistic genius on the podium turned me off as soon as Bradley started his own conducting. It's a shame because there are some moments where he did sound like the way Lenny spoke.

      Lenny, was a composer, a piano player, a musician, a conductor of two of the greatest orchestras in the world and an amazing teacher. I couldn’t agree more with the comment that the movie misses the mark by a thousand miles in tackling the actual artistic matters which is why I love Bernstein and pays no attention to his craft in rehearsals, particularly when preparing for a Mahler symphony. It merely makes a 3 minute climax with the finale of the 2nd symphony of Mahler “resurrection” and doesn’t even tell us why or how we got there. Coopers conducting is a mix between Willie Coyote on steroids and an epileptic attack and from the technical aspects there are several conducting mistakes where he asks for a downbeat when the piece clearly asks for an upbeat. Very disapointing. And I don’t believe for a second Coopers depiction of Lenny, not the voice or anything. And Lenny’s eyes were NOT blue. Shoddy work. Very shoddy. Cheers to Ms Mulligan.

    Wow, did you miss the mark on the 3rd act ... because of your oblivious, nearly blind grasp of the Mahler 2nd ... one of the greatest cinematic moments not only of this year, but most ...literally the filmic expression of a musical crescendo to a triumphant, symphonic climax - literally named, um, wait for it ... The Resurrection Symphony - the rebirth of Lenny's & Felicia's mutual love, adoration and commitment to one another, despite the emotional complexities, missteps and travails of their relationship. A bravura acting performance precisely when and where one crucially and precisely belonged - in a feat of spectacular, versatile, humbling, aesthetically and technically brilliant filmmaking. Good God - not a pun, but a nod to Mahler's sublime contemplation of The Divine - how could someone shrug at this masterpiece?? ... Especially compared to the now almost perpetual and regrettable bilious discharge of what passes for modern Hollywood movies ... Maestro is a glass of chilled champagne awash in a sea of tepid Tab.
