If Pierre mentions Toews, Price, or Crosby during a game they aren't playing in, take a drink. If he says "long or big stick", "big body presence", or "team x fans, get excited", take 2 drinks. If he interrupts the play by play team to complain about too many men, take 3 drinks. Make sure someone is around to call an ambulance

I was mostly neutral on Pierre for the most part, until that one time when Ovechkin and Crosby were yelling at each other from their benches, with Pierre literally in the middle. Pierre went out of his way to COMMENTATE ABOUT THE GREATEST CONVERSATION IN HOCKEY HISTORY as it was happening, and I'll never forgive him for that. Sometimes the best thing a commentator can do is just shut up

To be honest, I think it was really professional. By talking over it, we have the moment. If he was quiet, the broadcast would have cut away or cut mics cos of the language.
I’d put money down that he heard some language or knew it was coming and just kept talking to keep the show going.

I honestly had absolutely no idea about his past or the article / situation referred to in this video, but I have always felt that across all US sports -- NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, and also comparing with European football as telecast in many multiple countries (all of which I've followed actively over the years) -- Netherlands and France telecasts in particular -- and even compared to, say, the pro tennis tour or the Tour de France or Olympics (all of which I follow) -- that the national broadcast in the USA of hockey is the least professional and most biased I've ever, ever seen. The commentary is nothing short of ridiculous when the Penguins play any rival team -- Rangers, Capitals, Flyers etc. Criticism that makes no sense is levied against their opponents and literally every single play is interpreted from the Penguins' vantage point, good or bad (and it's "good" 90% of the time). It's just ridiculous. I actually like the Penguins but I still have to watch NBC nationally broadcast hockey games featuring them on mute. Otherwise I just get annoyed and stop enjoying the hockey. I do not do this for any other telecast of any other sport. I am an avid consumer of sports too.
    Just one man's opinion.

He's actually a lot more reserved and credible when he does his rounds on TSN radio. I listen to a lot of TSN 690 Montreal, and he and Mitch Melnick have a long working history together and get along great. Although, one time on radio somebody asked him if he ever had to deal with any players with alcohol trouble and he said "No, I have to go." And he left. I honestly didn't know about the Hartford thing until now, so that makes more sense.

Standard questions for a coach and he asked Colliton, who is grumpy and out of the playoffs, something to the effect of "is it fun coaching when your team is playing like this?" They are the stories that get the most attention. That doesn't mean that those people are right or wrong, they have a job because they sell. Today's world loves to argue and give their opinion, the more insulting the better. The more offensive the better. Is it better or worse? I guess that's a matter of opinion. It's definitely noisier. I have a mostly negative opinion about Pierre McGuire, but he does have his good points. As you said in your video, I think it's very clear that he knows his hockey, and his analysis more often than not has merit and insight. I also think he's occasionally capable of some really good colour calls ("Double Dion", etc) and I appreciate that he clearly loves the game.
My overwhelming problem with him is that he really likes to be the centre of attention, and he often interjects either when he shouldn't or when he doesn't have anything really valuable to add. He also talks too much in general and has a bit of an awkward social manner, which makes him particularly grating as a broadcaster. (As a coach, which was a lot of what you talked about, I can't say. I don't have enough insight.)

Here's a quote from Wiki, "McGuire had never been a head coach at any level. During his six months as Whalers head coach, McGuire coached the team to a 23-37-7 record.[18] McGuire was fired as head coach on May 19, 1994. After the termination, captain Pat Verbeek called it the best thing that could have happened to the Whalers. He said his teammates had no respect for McGuire and that McGuire was mocked by other teams."

As written in the article, "He is book smart and X's and O's smart, but often not people smart." NBC did not take note of this from 1994. There is hardly a soul watching NBCSN to see any of their analysts. The whole team needs to be revamped. This game is too awesome to have such mediocrity in its coverage. Listen to your fans and maybe, just maybe, the ratings may improve.

I hate Pierre McGuire always mispronouncing names. Perron is pronounced Purron not Pearon. Pietrangelo is pronounced like it spelt not Peterangelo. Also don't like him in the fact no matter who is playing when he is commentating he never won't talk about the Blackhawks. Blackhawks aren't even playing and he talks about them during a different game.

Shannon I've always been curious about why you and other Canucks fans had a problem with Mark Messier when he played in Vancouver towards the end of his career. May not be worth its own video, maybe you did one already. I know he became a bit self-important at the end of his career but it had to be more than that. Anyway, thanks.

NBC is almost unwatchable, McGuire and Roenick both know the game too well to be this bad. I have to wonder if there isn't some network honcho directing them. I watch with the sound off and the radio stream on. Even with that the camera work is horrible.

Look, the man is a master of maximizing opportunities and of self aggrandizement. Pierre McGuire made friends with Scotty Bowman who visited St Lawrence Univ to see his daughter who attended the school at the same time as PM was assistant coach of the hockey team there around 89-90. The next year, Bowman became director of player development in Pittsburgh and offered PM the position of Special Assignment Scout (whatever that is). The next year, Bowman became intirim Head Coach and he made PM an assistant. They went on to win the Stanley Cup in 1992. Isn't it odd that Bowman dropped PM from his staff after such a success? Bowman did continue on as head coach and won the President's Trophy the following season (93) sans McGuire?
PM then parleyed this "success" into a position with the Hartford Wailers (a remarkably unsuccessful team) as Assistant Coach in 92-93. The following season, he was moved to Assistant GM (this was Sept 93). Within months, after Holmgren quit as head coach, McGuire was made head coach himself. PM was fired at the end of the season and team captain, Pat Verbeek said it was the best thing that could have happened to the team and that he was mocked around the league. He may not have been ready to be a head coach at 32 but he was also a charletan. Honestly, the man was never in any position for more than a year and often much much less. And to hear him talk, he is the equal of many legitimate professionals who actually served time and climbed the ranks as coaches and managers rather than just appearing out of nowhere. McGuire is pure smoke and mirrors.
For Gods sake Shannon, why even go here? Your attempt at defending this boob tarnishes your own reputation frankly.
