Excellent work, Can you use water base coatings?

Thanks Lonnie. In this instance I can't use water based products. The restoration for heirloom furniture must be authentic as possible to restore function but also maintain value. So we use what was used during that era.
There are currently a couple of lines of water base lacquer products which are fully capable however.

Hello… I purchased a set of antique Weiman letter top end tables. The leather top needs restoring. Similarly to what you just did to that round table. What products did you use to get the result? Thank you for your assistance & time.

I have a table with the gold and I need to do some repairs. What products did you use? I don’t know what you used for the base and the sprays? I’d like to see a video of you doing these repairs, and showing us the product before you do the report. I did not understand how to do this, but want to learn. You do fabulous work!

The gold leaf and the heating element are available for these. However, you would have to have the specific pattern stamp for heat embossing. This used to be a trade in itself but has for all practical purposes died. I have not found it cost effective. It is possible to order stock sizes of leather table tops with embossing already applied. Replacing the top on an heirloom piece may not be advisable, however, and even repairing heirloom pieces could detract from authenticity in some some situations. My repairs have endeavored to preserve the authenticity of the original pieces as much as possible. Thanks for your question!

In order to fix a cracked leather surface, almost looking like a dry desert floor that is cracking from a complete lack of hydration, how would you suggest I go about that? Similar manner as you have here?

I can't comment on the leather you have because I can't see what kind of leather it is. v32, v37, v71 might help. There are more serious scenarios we may cover in the future.

    Hello Art,
I purchased an antique leather top , drop leaf table, at an estate sale this morning.
The gentleman brought the table with him from England.
I am wondering how to preserve the leather, as well as the wood, keeping the integrity, as well as any value, it may have.. it was relatively inexpensive, and I’m not sure the value, I just thought it was a beautiful table.. thank you sir for your time..

There's really nothing you can do if the leather has a coating which has sealed it. Keep it out of the sun so it doesn't shrink and keep it somewhat humidified. Unless it's an unprotected leather (which is not typically used on tables) you have to remember that you are treating the coating, not the leather. For example, if it's lacquer coated then you can get the same type of water rings from a drinking glass that you would get on a lacquered table. So a coaster is imperative. Thanks for the great question.
