I bought two very young "English boxwoods" from a local nursery, and am trying to do its first pruning, before potting, and having a terrible time "seeing" the bosai in these..this video was very inspiring. I am learning SO much on each video, just need to develope my imagination skills, in seeing whats there, and how to properly do a first pruning on nursery or "builders stores" specimens. Thank you for sharing...
I have 2 bonsai now 1 is 15 years old. I nearly cannot grasp that how long it takes for a good bonsai I will be long dead before I get to truly appreciate some really nice bonsai I make. For this reason I will pay for already old beautiful bonsai as they will not remind me of how short my life is :D
I cant get enough of doing bonsai trees, I go out and look for them and trim them and repot them. Now I am going out to find me a good looking pine tree to make into a bonsai, im excited!
I started my first Bonsai tree, and your videos are so helpful! I am starting to find a new hobby, its soothing and makes you closer with nature. Keep it up! Loved the updates! It looks so different! So nice beautiful though!
looks real good! im glad to see it is doing well because i just did a similar amount of pruning on a boxwood around the same size and i wasnt sure if i did to much but this tree looks real healthy!
you call yourself "bonsai student", you should change your name to "bonsai professor". very inspirational videos. must try this. i have been rooting cuttings from my boxwoods to make a formal hedge for my grotto garden.
I am working on my boxwood bonsai... i hope in time i will have your courage to cut it back my plant hard. like you did... I know they will grow back.. but it still hurts :)
Hey BonsaiStudent, great video! If you don't mind the critique, I'd like to offer some friendly advice. First off, don't cover those roots! They looked fine in the video and more air exposure will only help them to thicken. Also, I noticed that someone mentioned growing that tree in the ground; I wouldn't. As I'm sure you know, Box are VERY slow growers and it would take decades for the trunk to swell to even 3". I would sincerely suggest pruning to scale in proportion with the trunk size.
Since we're now in June it's prime time to defoliate Boxwood branches for ramification. Remove all leaves on each shoot except the last two at the tip of each branch. This will encourage secondary branches to grow with even more leaf nodes.
I think this tree is an excellent candidate for in ground planting to thicken up the trunk. Just be sure to put a tile at the bottom of the hole so it isn't tempted to establish a tap root.
Thank you! Any helpful tip for beginners? I still haven't put the bonsai in a new pot due to the fact that I did some heavy pruning, when would you suggest I repot it?
yeah can you do a update on this tree,, its may 14th 2014 now, im really looking forward of seeing this boxwood,, I have one and I like to see your update for this year of 2014

Hey... Nice videos. I really want to see what the tree looks like right now. May 2013 is past and May 2014 is coming.

I just made my first boxwood bonsai, Thanks for the inspiration! I made a cool video out my process, too!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I appreciate it very much.
good job, what i would do is shorten both trunks by about 3-4 inches, but do what you like, just create it how you like it
