- After my initial review of the Casio F91W, a lot of comments wondered if the watch was a fake. I was worried because I got it for a GREAT (read: cheap) price on Amazon. What if I had been tricked? In this video, I will compare my original F91W to a new one that was bought directly from Casio USA. Was it fake, or do I now have TWO new Casios? Let's find out.

@@the1010watchclub Before you say what the original was, I did the lighting test on my original and I thought it was fake, when you said fake lit better I felt a relief.
@@innosanto One of my Casios has LEDs but there is one in each bottom corner. So the whole face lights up pretty well. It couldn't cost too much to throw in another LED for the 91W.

Both of them are real f-91w casios. one of the best ways to find a fake is low quality printing of the words and red little arrows on the watch and also real casio watches are only made in *china* and *thailand*. If on the back plate of the watch is written made in *malaysia* or *japan* *do not buy it*. some people are ignorant and you did a great video, subbed👍🏻

Yes you lie because Casio also make them in Malaysia and Japan. So real ones can be made in Japan, China, Malaysia, or Thailand.

Even after 3 years, your video still helping people. I JUST got one FW91 Green Color! Bought from Aliexpress and still SO identical, I think its a refurhished.
I bought my (first) F-91W earlier today (Argos, Liffey Valley, Dublin, €11.99) and well happy - it tells the time (accurately), has a backlight (ok, green LEDs have more forward voltage than red, orange, yellow & amber but hey - ain't broken, don't change it), stopwatch, nice alarm and both looks & feels good. It's a keeper. 'Nuff said.
I would buy a Nato strap instead of throwing it away after the belt wears out

I don't fully understand why anyone would go to great lengths to make a fake watch that sells for so little money?
I collect wristwatches..I have to say I do have the F91-W watch in my collection .. It is a design classic ..Although I very rarely wear it.
All my watches are inexpensive ... The most expensive watch I have bought is a Seiko SNK809 K2 ..It was £80 GBP (Around $100 USD) ... It is an EPIC watch and is Automatic also. It lasts 44 Hours from fully charged and only gains/losses around 3 Seconds a day. The engineering on this watch is unbelievable for the money I paid for it.
It must have something to do with the fact that in some less fortunate parts of the world, 10 USD can actually be worth a lot. Like in Brazil, where the original f91w costs around 20 USD (~120 BRL) and that's almost 10% of the monthly minimum wage (around 262 USD (1,412 BRL) at the moment).
I just want to point out that comparing the packaging is moot because there are instances of fake watches being placed in genuine packages.
On another note, I'm surprised there are that many people who didn't know the F91's light is absolute trash. Seriously, I think Casio just puts it there for giggles.

As someone else has mentioned if you hold the bottom right button (button A I believe) for 3 seconds it should say “casi0”. A lot of the fakes don’t have this. Would be good to know.

I bought a job lot of five F91s for half the usual price off ebay. All were fake, all did the "casio" thing with button pressed.
The vintage japan made 593 module doesn’t have this feature but it also has a white light, not that many people will ever buy a vintage 593 casio though
I will buy both the watches. The A168 will look good in the office and the other for regular use
I have a casio Fw91...I love it for the resine wrist band and the horrible luminescent hehe, also is classic...it reminds me I'm not perfect and there's always room for improvement, and still become an icon.
The best way to tell for sure is to take the back off. But the backs are a pretty good giveaway. The screws on fakes are different.
But I avoid those watches in general, due to only having three buttons. You have to go through the adjust screen as a part of regular use. That is like having to pull out the crown on a 3-hander to check the date. Too much chance of messing up the time. Any Casio with four buttons is great -- like the W800 or W96. Also, in the middle of the night, any illumination is going to be better than the lume on any three-hand watch. Those get very dark after 1/2 hour.

Very good point and I worry about messing up my seconds all the time. That said it’s muscle memory at this point for me to skip the set screen with a double tap

These go for about $17 in the US now, and you can now get slightly better models for a buck or two less. This watch goes for a few extra dollars simply because it's the biggest-selling Casio digital watch of all time.

Recently i bought a second-hand f91w,but it is totaly brand new without case.I tried my best and could't prove it fake or not.😅(Btw price is 3 dollars including shipping )
Looks real. F91's are made in multiple countries so try to compare them.
When you showed the faces of the watch side by side, it was obvious that it was going to be genuine. The U is either missing or larger on fakes, and the print quality is never quite the same.
Indeed they just have terrible illumination. Always did. Whether it's really become worse with revisions, or whether it's batch sourcing variation, i don't know. There's actually plenty of room on the PCB and around the display that they could have wedged a second LED in at the opposite side of the display, and maybe even a diffuser to go all the way around, but well they didn't, and i don't see them running out of routing space necessarily either. There's even people just modding a second LED in with a little magnet wire, which improves the usability by a lot.
A substantial reason not to get the 168 is that the metal is obviously just plated on and doesn't wear well with time, revealing first copper undercoat and then plastic, and it can flake off as well at the boundary between copper and plastic. The F-105 is a watch which seems identical to 168 but with black plastic chassis left natural. Unfortunately it tends to get more expensive than 168.

In third-world countries, the real one is the equivalent of $25 and the fake one is $6. That $19 difference buys a lot in some countries.
Casio is a brand that sells its products in different countries, so prices can vary greatly, there is no single and invariable price. Also, the F91W is a very popular watch, even being so cheap there is a profit margin on its fakes due to sales volume. With the advantage that to counterfeiting it is not necessary a large investment in machinery, printers, specialized knowledge or excessive precision, which would be required to copy a watch from Lange & Söhne, for example.

The fake manufacturers nowadays can easily imitate the "casi0" trick. The dead giveaway is always the print quality, print always looks poor on the fakes. They can't simply copy casio's level of printing.

Honestly I love it too... it's actually become my gym watch. Perfectly unobtrusive and the stopwatch is super helpful. I had to beat up on the lume but every watch has its quirks
For the last 6 years I have had and use a fake Casio A168 chrome. Compared to my genuine beaten up 168 there are very slight differences but the fake is an excellent watch and been reliable also still looking good too. The main difference is that the case is made of some sort of base metal which gives it a very nice comfortable weight to it. I actually wear it more often than the genuine Casio. So the moral of the story is, a fake can be an excellent worthy item. But why make a fake copy of a watch that costs pocket money I just don’t understand?
i have genuine and fake f-91w n ya know what the actual alarm beep (noise) is much louder on the fake... but overall the genuine is clearer screen at angles...the genuine also has a darker blue around its screen not so bright red WR and biggest give away is the little U underneath the resist..fakes are lot bigger...Plus back cover genuine is brushed horizontally fakes virtically in most cases i might add,, but overall the fakes are scarily getting good even in a super budget retro casio..My fake cost less than £5 and still going strong....Great review

Re: A168... but I WANT the crappy light. That's what makes it so charmingly retro. Every time I see a mod to fix the light on the F-91W I die a little inside. LEAVE IT ALONE!
Have you held the PM/24H button on both to see if they both say Casio?

If you’re looking for the F-91W with EL, I would recommend the F-105W. It’s essentially the F-91W with the EL so you can actually read the time in the dark. Costs a couple three bucks more. Worth the extra, IMO.
I will tell you sweet surprise. If you are sleeping and you are long time at dark and than wake up you will probably appreciate the original F-91W which will not burn your eye.
Dunno why Casio don't place the light at the bottom or top, but at the side...

The light is fine.
The screws on the back plate on the fakes are phillips head, the genuine ones are a combi screw, and will take a phillips head or slotted head screwdriver. Both those watches have the legit screws.
Also, the word CASIO on the metal buckle on the strap is legit on both watches. The fakes use the wrong font.
Also, because CASIO is a Japanese company, the fakes usually have 'Made in Japan' stamped on the back plate, they were only made in Japan in the early days, most commonly now made elsewhere due to lower wage costs.

its way simpler than do all that things, to see if its original , simple press the right button ( alarm ) 5 seconds, and the display with show CASIo , then you know its the real one or not
F91w is excellent and the light works fine.

Because around 3 million of these are sold every year. If you can muscle in on that you only have to undercut by a dollar or two to seem legit and still make decent money. These are cheap to make.

I laugh hard when people are scared that they might've gotten a fake f91w, when these things are freaking so cheap to buy, it is HILARIOUS! Guys, it's not a damn ROLEX! Calm the frick DOWN! 🤣 Goodness, gracious, they act like they are spending their life's savings on this watch. Are they 9 years old? Possibly! 🤣 I bought a Skmei 1222 watch for $15 near 2 years ago. Yes, it is big and silly looking, but guess what? The light on it is clear and I can change the color to sky blue, dark blue, purple, yellow, white, yellow, light green, dark green and red. Why is that a big deal to me? Because when I wake at night and do not want to destroy my night vision, I like using the red light to see the time. Freaking Chinese companies like Skmei selling watches with actual valuable use for $15, but CASIO - the huge, multimillion dollar company - could not even make the light on this f91 show up on both sides? Really, no excuse at all. It is pathetic! 🤣

Take the back off and compare to be 100% sure. Many vids on TH-cam showing genuine F91 with back off. Good luck.
