I use a cole planter on my 140. 1 pt hitch. If the rear wheel isn't making contact, it won't plant. My fix was to put a small tractor weight on the back of the fertilizer hopper. Worked great. No slips in the rows.

I hear you about the tractors. Does it make sense to not have tractors but get a mule to do all the soil work?

It will plant almost any seed to any spacing.
You just need the proper seed plates and gears for different spacing

Cole planet jr is a better planter, I tried the mx 12, and the IH duplex, but liked the planet jr the best.
