Good video Mart I think a lot of mk1 owners will find this interesting because most of the original master cylinders don't work correctly when bleeding. Looking forward to part 2

I could not bleed the brakes on my Zephyr Mk1 after rebuilding the braking system. I handed it over to the local French garage owner. I am sure he could not bleed them either. He told me the master cylinder needed to be replaced. I asked him how he knew "You have replaced everything else so it must be that". I was not convinced as I had replaced the master cyinder seals and it checked ok on the bench. All the same, I ordered a new master cylinder and handed it to him, A few days later he told me the car was ready. I am pretty sure that he could not bleed the system even with the new master cylinder but then he was forced to figure out how to do it. I'm guessing that he rigged up a system for pressure bleeding the system despite the Zephyr's brake reservoir not being suitable for pressure bleeding.

@@MartsGarage I have the same challenges on my channel too! The TH-cam Analytics kinda help but I get to the point of just shoot it, edit it and post it. And let the viewer fast forward and rewind to their liking. I really enjoy your Flatheads!!!!

Hey Mart: The best "gauge" of how well a modification worked is when the modification looks like it was always meant to be there. Another way of putting/saying that might be "the simpler it looks, the better it was designed" !! What my son and I term as "elegant" whenever we feel like we have "stumbled" onto it. ;o) You and Jeff have achieved that with this modification !!! That's a clever design where one reservoir works for both cylinders. Don't think I have ever seen that before. Is that common with English vehicles??? I believe all of the "American" design cylinders have the "integral" reservoir. Many times with "under/dash" cylinders, that becomes a maintenance issue. Cylinders like these would solve that issue. Assuming, of course, they are available with proper size bores and strokes !!

Hello Ron. We elected to retain the existing reservoir because it is very tight in that position. It has a dividing wall so is in effect a twin reservoir. Geoff made some mods to it to improve it. You will see that in part 2.

I have a Zephyr Mk1 and rebuilt the braking system. I could not bleed the brakes. A local garage took it away and did it. Me: "How did you do it?" Garage owner: "Trade secret!".

Neat little job Mart, they look like Pilot master cylinders, must have been some left in the parts bin at Dagenham. Did you consider make one plate to cover both master cylinders, tricky to measure I admit.

Hello Pat. Yes, I believe the old master cylinder is similar to a Pilot. I didn't consider a single plate for both, because initially we were trying to fix the brakes only. The job then expanded into brakes and clutch for both cars. There is a commercially available plate that covers both. I didn't see an image of that until I had made my plates. That one sits the cylinders vertical, I think our idea is better because of improved pipe access.
