great you to mention Conner&Clayton. i had a great time watching those series. i'd like to know more about your thoughts on the asics test protocol which we've seen on the previous two episodes. we don't see much r&d stuff on super shoes so it was quite exciting.
Clayton (and Conner) really earned a fan from that series in me. Both the Paris and NYC series have been amazing to watch. I believe that test wasn’t an Asics test. It was Clayron’s own test, using Stryd in Dr. Hunter’s BYU lab. Dr. Iain Hunter is well know in running biomechanics. The protocol looked pretty standard for similar tests I’ve watched or seen data from. No doubt Asics benefited from them though. It was nice to see Asics allow their prototypes to be featured so much. I’m also happy to learn the name of the unknown white super soft shoe we saw in the Metaspeed leaks… as the “MetaLite”. 👍🏻

Other than what you have mentioned, the shoe news that thought was most interesting was Casey Neistat doing his first sub 3 at New York in some Brooks not plated number - Glycerine Max I think and despite him saying had linked up with Brooks. Social Media Shakeout Marathon World Tour LOL - my "bread and butter" content of late :) Going to be challenging to do all them - might have recruit some more influencers and send different groups here and there everywhere - like we saw this time. Seriously does seem a bit of a money grab but I guess that increasingly underpins everything in running.
Casey has ALWAYS run in Brooks. years ago he did a vlog on them. Whenever I saw him running in NYC he was ALWAYS in Brooks. He'd literally buy the same pair, 3-4 at a time, year after year (he seems to be a very good Brooks runner). His past 5-6 sub 3 marathon attempts were all in super shoes. Due to his leg injury his running gate is SO bad, all that extra Brooks foam must really make it all work for him. Moneygrab in running? At the expense of runners? From large organizations? NEVER! That world tour is going to be a challenge to get everywhere all at once.
Hey Chris, I really like the technical nature of your content. Thanks man. As an Asics loyalist and previous commentator on v4 of the Metaspeed Sky, what's your take on the flat back but also, that funny-looking arch in the middle of the outsole? Most other super shoes sit flush to the ground...
I think the heel shape is for a similar reason as to what Nike does in the AF3 (and the RF4 and soon the SF2 and VF4). The foam collar around the base of the foot, from the midfoot back, cradles and locks in the heel to the midsole while the reductive design of the heel shape brings the heel bevel forward, nearly directly under the heel, making the heel transition faster for heel strikers AND reduces weight of the shoe. As for the arch in the midfoot outsole...Metaspeeds have always had that to some degree, in fact most Asics shoes have that. I have always assumed it was there to support the mid foot durning the windlass mechanism during the stride. I think the photos we have from the leaks are shot at odd angles that exaggerate it more than anything. Knowing Asics engineering, they have their reason. They are a VERY good engineering company that never leaves things like this to chance.
@@SagasuRunning Awesome thank you. My fave Chris discussion: shoe observations. As I sipped my chai and watched the race, I wondered if you were going to comment on Mantz wearing off-the-shelf shoes. Nine stars? Yikes! They're becoming less and less attainable.
Mantz seems very particular about what he works out in and races in. In the videos on Clayton’s channel you see Conner in multiple AF3s often. Nine stars is a bit excessive. I agree.
@Wings_nut 😂 I need to go back and do NYC right. I want to do Boston and ideally Tokyo is the next marathon I run…. The others I’m in no real hurry. Knowing they will add more races as they want… all incentive for me to want to earn a 6 (or 7 or 13 or 34) star medal is completely gone.
You touched on it a little. Seems to me the Alphafly and Vaporfly are heading toward what ASICS has done with the Metaspeed Sky and Edge. Of course Nike did it first with top tier racers with two different plate configurations, but they’re looking like more similar shoes like what ASICS has done with the Paris series.
As you said, Nike did it first. The VF or AF question has always been based on feel, as it should be, and not on some biomechanical concept most runners have no idea how to classify themselves. The biomechanics are interesting but ultimately the feel a runner wants or prefers is what will make the shoe work or not. The VF4 evolving towards the AF3 makes sense…. Though I wonder how elites will react to it. I can’t wait until 2025 to see. Two exciting Nike racers coming… the Streakfly 2 and Vaporfly 4.
Oh, I’m going to be all over the VF4. Don’t worry. I’m a big fan of the AF3. Totally agree on Clayton. His channel really has made me a fan of him (and Conner).
Was curious how the AF V3 percentage would play out on the NYC elevation profile. While I love the AF V3 for flats, rolling hills and downhills, I have concerns on sustained uphills late in the race, aka....the Newton hills. Guess I'll find out in March with my retired racing pair during the tail end of my block. Ideally, my Boston block specific training stimulus will make this a non-issue. But without that, I could see the midfoot/forefoot area taking a pounding!
I've found the AF3 surprisingly "normal" on hills. I worried about the AF1 and especially AF2...but the AF3 proved to be just fine. Climbing is solid...descending can be mild or if you stomp on the forefoot you do get that extra EXTRA kick from the pods.
That little downhill or "cat hill", is 0.25 mile, 3.70% hill grade. All the runners know if you're going to make a move & you got something left in the tank, that's your window.
Cat Hiill is on the East side of the park around 74th to 80th… definitely not the section I was referring to from Columbus circle with if 700m of the finish….
@@SagasuRunning I thought you were talking about where the marathon course enters the park, at 5th Ave on the East side at the reservoir, and then shortly hit the cat hill decline.
@therapygrind Nope, not there. Where Nageeye dropped Chebet finally as the (re)entered the park from Columbus circle. Interesting both races were decided by moves in that area. Men’s on the downhill into the park and the Women’s on the bottom of the finish hill.
Not sure what to think about Sydney getting added as a major. It wasn't a secret obviously, but it definitely seems like a slap in the face of anyone currently holding a 6 star finisher medal. It'll be interesting to see if they try to come out with a 7 star finisher medal or 8 star finisher medal if they know they are trying to get to 9. I hope they don't. Those things will almost be obsolete the second you are handed one. I agree with someone else who commented here that they have almost made that goal financially unachievable with the addition of a 7th major and if it isn't already, it certainly will be once it is at 9 for anyone that isn't extremely well off. Pretty disappointing.
Ya… I’m curious how they resolve that 6 star finisher problem thing with 7, 8 or 9 without making different tiers, intentional or not. They have created a bit of a mess. Also in the press release they hinted at “doubling” the current races in the next 10 years…. That is only going to make it worst. It does automatically put anyone who earned a 6 star medal by this year in a somewhat exclusive club.
From the press release, they plan on continuing the 6 star medal for the original 6 races, and introducing a 9 star medal for subsequently completing the additional 3.
@@SagasuRunning I read in their FAQ that they are going to keep the 6 star for the established 6 ones. That said it is bit like only having access to a Pro 4. You wonder if the Evo 1 would be better...
@ even if the pro 4 is better all around or just as good. I wonder if mentally with the records being broken and people running their best in the evo if it creeps in their mind like wow I could be wearing those instead and over 26 miles it’ just could’ve given me that slight advantage I may have needed

I am curious about the VF4 and the direction it is heading…. But I think we haven’t seen an important part of Nike’s racing plans for 2025 yet.
racings are billboards for these brands. surely adidas would prefer to advertise their running shoes that readily available to us (AAAP) than some extremely-expensive pseudo-limited-edition running shoes like the Evo.
Yes… but Elites want any advantage to win… and the brands what the podiums and world records… the door has already been opened by Adidas… it can’t be shut.
I believe Abbott has effectively shattered the “run all the world marathons” ambition for many individuals in North America and Europe. Let’s be candid. Kiwis, Australians, and others are aware that participating in major races requires a long-haul flight, but those in Europe and North America had Tokyo as their “bucket list race.” Now, having two such long-haul races makes the dream seem unattainable for many. While the World Majors likely receives greater financial rewards than participating in all six races, the prospect of seven or more races seems excessive and, when viewed solely from a financial perspective, is a significant step too far. I personally ran the New York City Marathon eleven times and was fortunate enough to attend this past weekend as a spectator. The atmosphere was electrifying, surpassing anything I had ever experienced. I participated in the Tracksmith shakeout run, and a significant portion of the energy was fueled by the enthusiasm of the TH-camrs.
I’m curious what they do with the 6 star runners. That’s always been such a big marketing goal. I’m really curious how they resolve that. As a native New Yorker… I agree the energy is electrifying in the MYC marathon. As a digital nomad, who is not afraid of long haul flights and can base myself anywhere. I welcome more diverse races around the world. However… I agree, seven or more seems excessive. But they can’t tier the races either, UTMB style.
Do you also feel that Nike’s plans are really going to screw the consumer’s experience? Are we expected to accept feeling like we’re not worthy of the best tech? Feels like the wrong strategy considering the company’s business performance. I think Nike is really losing touch with its customers. Like I understand that Adidas is kind of doing the exclusive access thing with the Evo…but surely Nike can see the opportunity to re-engage with the consumer and to be the shoe of the people? I feel like this is also reflective of their lifestyle shoes.
The consumer is probably still getting the best tech, it’s just that the elites are getting shoes custom-made for their particular anatomy and style. In cycle racing, the pro riders have bikes built specially for them, in terms of sizing and geometry, because cost isn’t such an issue at that level.
A Standard and Elite super shoe will be the same tech, just the Elite will be stripped down, likely less durable and more focused for a strong runner like and Elite. No reason an everyday runner couldn't run in them, but they will get diminishing returns. Very much like the Evo 1. Again, look at the current Nike Dragonfly 2 and Dragonfly 2 Elite for the types of differences you'll likely see.
I do currently have a bias with NB because of their design and engineering (though I've seen some things form 2025 that give me hope). Not sure what this has to do with NYC?
@@SagasuRunning sorry you hve a point! cause i watch them again quite a lot in NYCM and was hoping to see them here, i hope you give them another chance! the elite version are a mix of adios pro and alphaflys and have been the top choice for a lot of us amateurs this year :)
I really hope we never get a Vaporfly or Alphafly Elite. Hard to describe, but I just find the idea of having an 'elite' version of an already top of the line/elite shoes really unnecessary. I feels it waters down the lineup somehow, with them making "worse" version of their best shoes.
The needs of an every day runner, like you and me, and the needs of Elite runners are very different. Adidas proved it matters. Cat is out of the bag already… Also Nike is already doing this in their product line up with the Dragonfly 2 and Dragonfly 2 Elite. The DF2 is “less” than the DF2E… it’s more the DF2E is refined for a runner who can (or needs too) extract the absolute most out of it.
Vaporfly Elite was a thing from the very beginning. When the original Vaporfly launched, it did so alongside a far more limited and elusive Elite model. To this day, special "pe" models of the Alphafly are routinely spotted on Nike athletes' feet in competition.
@benjaminzaoui9683 Yup. It has always been there. In fact it’s been strange that we haven’t had another one since that first time. Things are changing.
@TimGrose otherwise your feet will literally explode. It’s impossible to run any more with under 30mm of foam in the forefoot. Downright cruel and unusual punishment.

💯
A Standard and Elite super shoe will be the same tech, just the Elite will be stripped down, likely less durable and more focused for a strong runner like and Elite. No reason an everyday runner couldn't run in them, but they will get diminishing returns.
Very much like the Evo 1.
Again, look at the current Nike Dragonfly 2 and Dragonfly 2 Elite for the types of differences you'll likely see.
You have a bias with new balance running shoes we Run Chicago and they were easyly top 2 choice for Runners
Cat is out of the bag already…
Also Nike is already doing this in their product line up with the Dragonfly 2 and Dragonfly 2 Elite.
@@SagasuRunning And don't forget the Peg 41 - that is only for elite athletes :) Rest of us need far more soft high stack to run over 6 miles...
@TimGrose otherwise your feet will literally explode. It’s impossible to run any more with under 30mm of foam in the forefoot. Downright cruel and unusual punishment.
