MY 5 HAPPY PLACES around Glasgow, and why one left me SAD. Art, culture, travel and history.

  • I actually can't remember what inspired me to make this video. I think I was lying in bed, and I thought of one of the happy places which was eventually mentioned in the video, and thought of others. They all came to me very quickly, and there are probably many others. This personal journey takes you to outer space and aliens, Glasgow airport, Scotland's largest train station, a little painting by Salvador Dali and an aborted trip to the tropics.

    Glasgow Central is also my happy place. Blows me away every time I go there. Shame about the winter gardens. They are stunning

      Thanks Mary. I was gutted about the Winter Gardens. I knew they had been closed due to Covid restrictions, but when Glasgow City Council opened up the Peoples Palace, I had assumed the gardens would open as well. Oh well.

    I loved it when there was a spirally ramp that took you onto the platforms at Glasgow central to park your car. That was my happy place. And the dream I might one day stay in the wooden hotel built into the wall..

    Thank you for taking me along for your happy places video. I suppose I should have spent more time in Glasgow after the arrival at the airport and explored the Museum and Winter Gardens back in May 22. Time to fly over the Big Pond and continue the journey...hope the Winter Gardens are open? Take care☕

    On a serious note, I was in glesgee in Jan 2020, yeh pre- covi, when I stumbled across a free walking tour, really recommend it, it made me realize there and then that Scotland isnt all about auld reekie' Edinburgh'
    Went back in Aug 2020, bad timing had to spend 10 days in quarantine, but surprisingly due to our Airbnb being in Alexander parade,we spent a great deal of time in the local park. What a wonderful place! Due to restrictions we had to live out of the local Coop, living mainly on Scottish pies+ steak pies. Oh and the odd fish supper. Did have 1day out,in Ayr, Spanish wife was impressed.
    Plan to return to glasgee soon.

    Kelvingrove Is one of my happy places too. I visited there a few years ago to listen to the amazing Estonian Philharmonic Chamber choir and it created an incredibly powerful core memory for me. I am working through your back catalogue of content and enjoying your content immensely.

    I traveled back and forth too. Aww the sign in purple is gone. Pure Deed Brilliant. I would have to agree with you on everything but I also would add the Coats and Clark Church in Paisley. The architecture is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing. So many changes have taken place since we lived there. Husband is from Paisley. There used to be a museum there too that had some of Queen Victoria's beautiful dresses with the paisley design. Still love it. Beautiful video. Wow do we miss home.

    Hi Scott. I’m visiting Glasgow for a few days and visited Kelvingrove Art gallery and the Peoples Palace today mainly based on this video. I can see why they’re your happy place. Both are fantastic places to visit. Enjoyed looking at the history of Glasgow at the People’s Palace and so many interesting artefacts in Kelvongrove although somewhat ironically the picture of Christ of Saint John of the Cross has been loaned out to another museum until December!! Oh well will give me a reason to pay another visit to Glasgow in the future!! Lol

    Another great wee video. I'd move to Glasgow tomorrow if I didn't have commitments down south. I used to live in Blanefield and have many happy memories of the city. My five special places would be #1 the view from near the Gowk Stane, overlooking Strathblane with views of Glengoyne and north to Ben Lomond: #2 Kelvingrove Art Gallery, where we used to go every Saturday afternoon in the 1980s to hear a friend play the magnificent Lewis pipe organ: #3 St Bride's (Scottish Episcopal) Church, Kelvinside (actually, now in Hyndland after an argument with the owner of the Kelvinside estate) - I spent many happy hours in this Bodley-designed church, with interesting stained glass, silver by the Director of the Glasgow School of Art and inlaid mother-of-pearl cupboards in the sacristy: #4 The Botanic Gardens and the Kibble Palace (not as large as the Winter Garden at the People's Palace, but I love its sinuous lines): #5 Kingsborough Gardens, Hyndland, with handsome Victorian/Edwardian townhouses in Dumfries-shire red sandstone on either side and beautiful Glasgow Style glass (and which are forbidden from being subdivided).

    • @PlanesTrainsEverything
      @PlanesTrainsEverything  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately the Lewis Pipe organ is off limits at the moment. Hopefully they will start playing is once Covid settles down. After the disappointment of The Winter Gardens, that put me in the mood for a trip to the Botanical Gardens. I haven't been there for years.

    My favourite happy place in Glasgow now makes me very sad to think about.
    The Glasgow School of Art building, as was. Outside and in.
    So I remember it as it was.
    No mention of Charles Rennie Mackintosh in his home city is disappointing.
    Queens Cross Church is a very happy place. A feast for the eyes.

    Vale! I regarded art gallery as my home. Dali very extrovert figure, always dressed as businessman, reflective in Emporda caffs. Why did he get so attached to Emporda where he created his fishing viillage house? There is something fundamental here, his paintings of coast are stunning.

    Hi mate. A lovely vlog, thank you so much! But the way things are going nationally, any reference to Empire and greatness is frowned on and will have disclaimers on all paintings and statues only showing the negativity of said individuals! And certainly no reference to Glasgow being the second city of the empire! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧

    Hi Scott, just been viewing some of your Glasgow based videos and seen that the Winter Gardens were closed at your visit. Have you seen the shocking pictures of the inside during the alleged refurbishment. They let everything die! There is nothing left at all. Someone should be held accountable for this outrage. Neil.

    Hi there, just discovered your videos so am now working my way thru your Scottish ones! Quick question please? Do you find train travel fairly safe? The reason I ask is, as a solo traveller, I am wondering how paranoid I need to be when on a train with my luggage and then I want to go to the bathroom! Obviously I keep my crucial things on my person, but should I lock my bag to a seat while I nip to the toilet or wander to take a photo or two?! Cheers from Australia

    Your from Paisley? I think you have ‘acquired’ someone else’s accent over time.

    • @PlanesTrainsEverything
      @PlanesTrainsEverything  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was born in Paisley, but that's what happens to your accent when you grow up and spend 25 years of your life in Australia. People can never really pinpoint where I'm from. Even when using an Aussie accent in Sydney, people could still detect a twang.
