Normal carbide inserts have an edge radius, because that improves surface finish and durability for how they are used on industrial machines - at the cost of needed more power to make the cut. Deliberately changing the insert geometry to a dead sharp edge makes them much more useful on benchtop hobby machines, because that reduces the power needed to make the cut - at the cost of durability and surface finish. That's a great tradeoff for people with small lathes, especially since inserts can then be sharpened many times. (I use a slow speed wet grinder, so I don't have to be concerned with carbide grinding dust or the noise of a dust removal system.)

Nice work. I made one of these and put a handful of small magnets in the aluminum disk. It works great to swap out disks and if you catch an edge the disk slides instead of destroying itself.

With our Sunnen sharpener they give you a spray to keep the dust down so you don't breath it in, but it does evaporate and the dust can become air-borne again if disturbed.
That is awesome...I actually use these small diamond wheels from HF, model 69658, and use the tapered wheel in an air die grinder to sharpen my tungstens, and then the larger flat wheel on an arbor in the lathe chuck to dress my brazed carbide...
Grinding always comes out better when grinding with the wheel coming down because the work piece is being pushed down into the table Giving the work piece stability while you’re grinding. Really nice machine and great videos. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Might think about adding a cool mist or some way to wash swarf away. Put one on mine and it made a world of difference both with cutting ability and wheel life. That's a very nice looking piece you made there. You make lots of good projects and I would watch much more if just a lil' less cloy, but hey everybody is different nothing wrong with that as long as it's not fake or forced.

How do you grind back the steel substrate w/o damaging the carbide - or - the carbide gouges the wheel(?) grinding the steel?

BTW- I've been a Welder/Fabricator for over 45 years and never had the chance to learn machining until now, always wanted to,but have always worked heavy work in the field. Do you have any advice on where to start? I believe I will be building industrial furniture and parts for my motorcycles and cars I do make my own tools and machinery so being able to make parts will make thing move faster and be much more satisfying for sure! BTW- I'm one of those kats leaving SoCal in droves as ASAP!

I use them on my home made variable speed wood turning lathe with a 6" face place to sharpen wood turning tools (mostly HSS, some high carbon steel, some PM steel and some carbide) regular high carbon steel wood working tools like chisels and plane irons etc and other tools inc carbide. I have yet to run into durability issues. But I dont sharpen all that much carbide, rather mostly HSS, with the exception of the 4" disc I use to sharpen carbide tipped table and chop saw blades. I have also bought the cheapest off shore Diamond hones ( + - 3x7" ) and cut a couple up to make paddle hones. I use those to touch up drill bits and also to sharpen cupped round 10--12 mm carbide inserts that I use for deep hollowing on the wood lathe. Thank you Dale for your quick response. I have a KK CALAMAR which uses wheels from Accu-Finish and they had once told me to use Windex spray glass cleaner. But I will try paint thinner on both wheels. If you find something better let me know. I only have a 600 grit wheel but I did purchase your 3000 grit wheel today. There have been people show that on TH-cam. Not for production work but as a quick & dirty solution to drilling out broken bolts. Can also be done on a green wheel or any diamond wheel.
I don't know why your lap disks are wearing out. Mine have been going strong for years. With diamond they still feel like day one. Mind you I have them glued down to their backing plate. The diamond doesn't wear really but it can be knocked off. Perhaps a flapping lap disk and vibration are the reason.

old dried silicone (one you use in kitchen,bathroom ,to seal things)works wonders on diamond stone and sandpaper.Old rubber soles of the shoes will work aswell.
DD, what is rotational speed that you qualify as slow? inches or feet per second? Since a lot of material isn't be removed, what HP motor would suffice?
I made mine from a lil' 40 VDC motor that is prob 1/4 hp and it has more than enough power. For a 6" wheel about 300 rpm is optimal, but you can get away with a little more if you use coolant/lube, which I recommend using regardless to knock down carbide dust and make the wheels last way longer. I use a cheap chinese mist coolant head with water soluble grinding coolant that works well.
No that video was a fast forward video of how you built the grinder . First thing with those cheap carbide tools is chuck them in some solvent to get rid of the paint .

Yes, accu-finish are crazy expensive. Thats why I made mine.
Sharpening real big carbide tool bits can take real much time! It's good for small ones though.

When you put the radius on the tool turn it 90 degrees and rotate it up so you don’t cut a groove into your wheel

The best price I've seen for a disk is $15. if you pay less then that you might get in trouble, but give it a try see what happen, and let me know.
