In 2035, some predict that Sarawak and Sabah will hold a referendum to become an autonomous region of Indonesia. About 15 years later, Brunei and East Timor followed, 20 years later the Philippines followed and formed the Nusantara Raya or Nusantara Union/Federation.
This is driven by the spirit of the Austronesian/Pacific Island nations, which include Indonesia, Sabah-Sarawak, Brunei, East Leste and the Philippines

On 16 September 1963, Sabah (Old name North Borneo) merged with Malaya, Sarawak, and Singapore (left in 1965) to form MALAYSIA. It's like the United Kingdom, so Sabah is not just a state, its have their own government, while there was no objection to Islam being the national religion of Malaysia, there should be no State religion in North Borneo (Sabah), and the provisions relating to Islam in the present Constitution of Malaya should not apply to North Borneo (Sabah)

SABAH(North Borneo) is not included in Malaysia it is part of Sultanate of Sulu (Philippines) ever since before they become independent from British.
Like SINGAPORE is part of Malaysia and separated from Malaysia on 1965 while Sabah has distance of 1,011 miles from Kuala Lumpur but still they are claiming this part own by Sultanate of Sulu (Philippines). Meanwhile the distance of Sabah from Manila is only 683 miles.

Malaysia Borneo which sabah and sarawak are state of malaysia but they not follow much the federal goverment in peninsular. They dont have sultan like what we have in peninsular. They got the authorities from the Federal Goverment to run by themself. Its kind of similar with United Kingdom system ( UK ). Fun fact, Malaysia was ruled by the Britain over 100 years but none of us speak english in British accent.

Sabah & Sarawak is a Autonomous State in Malaysia. That is different from other states in peninsular Malasyia.
North Borneo (Sabah), Sarawak, Malaya & Singapore (1965 left) is the party that form a new nation that called Malaysia today.

I lived in Sabah for 6 years. But am from Kuching, Sarawak, the neighbouring state in Borneo. That weird building is the state legislature. While Sabah after decades is considered a state, constitutionally and according to history based on the Malaysia agreement of 1963 MA63, Malaysia was formed with Malaya, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak as four countries into one Federation. So, it is a country and state. To be clear, even though i am Sarawakian and Malaysian, i can't work full-time in Sabah without a work permit and Malayans from the West, need a passport to enter Sabah and are not permitted to buy native property, i.e treated as an interstate migrant or near foreigner. The same goes for Sabahans to Sarawak.

What you guys didn't see are the really happening parties of weddings and the annual Harvest Festival among the indigenous Sabahans! I tell you, its equivalent to Rio or Ibiza. Sabahans know to party, and there's free flow of rice wine and beer. And one sound that is unique in Sabah, is the Gong at parties. Come to Sabah if you are a real party lover.

Actually, Sabah and Sarawak are not States. In 1963, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore and Malaya as sovereign nation's on their own, joined to form The Federation of Malaysia. The Kingdom of Brunei was supposed to join them but opted out at the last moment. In 1965, Singapore left the Federation to become an independent nation. By right, Malaysia should comprise of 3 entireties now. Somehow, in 1976, by a controversial Act of Parliament, Sabah and Sarawak became the 13 and 14 States of Malaysia, due to their very own Leaders agreeing to it. Despite their abundant natural resources (petroleum), they remain with poor infrastructure and high levels of poverty. Now, it is an issue raised constantly by aspiring leaders of the 2 new States to acquire politicall support for their own personal ambitions. With such pretense, the people are the ones disappointed and deceived.
