    Ian, I was in Cambridge the week after you recorded this. The feel of walking around, and particularly the state of the Kings College Chapel renovations and its scaffolding looked very familiar. A truly delightful tour. I even learned (learnt? I'm a Yank) a few things! To me you hit just the right mark with your tone, the things that you comment upon, the whole (seamless!) presentation. You are a fine and knowledgable guide.

    So nice to see my home city. I am currently away for uni. Even though I have lived near Cambridge and know the city very well as went to secondary school in the middle of the city, I still learnt new things.
    Intrigued to know what renovations are happening at King's college. I know that there is approved plans to put solar panels on the roof of the King's collage Chapel.
    Know all of these streets very well.

It was Tommy Flowers (a post office engineer) that designed and built the computer: Colossus. Tommy Flowers based a lot of his design on the work of Charles Babbage

    My Mum's friend's son is a choir boy in King's collage. The 24th of December service is not broadcasted live anymore it is recorded. My sister went to the recording for 2022 which is also when the Easter service is recorded so no christmas jumpers were allowed. It is live on radio on Christmas eve not tv.

    Pardon my question as I'm from the U.S and have recently rediscovered English history. When you described the land as being marshy before, would those be the marshes that King Ælfred was hiding when the Vikings were pursuing him?

    • @mancroft
      @mancroft ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No. Those were in the southwest of England at Athelney, Sedgemoor, Somerset. The marshes around Cambridge / Ely were used by Hereward the Wake as a hiding place.

    Ian, I'm from Singapore and planning to go to England. If one can only go to one city to either Oxford or Cambridge, which one would you recommend? My time is very limited in England, unfortunately 😅

    • @ToursbyFootLondon
      @ToursbyFootLondon  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, this is the great debate! Everybody has a different answer. A common thought is "Oxford is a town with a University and Cambridge is a University with a town." Oxford is slightly bigger and busier - but for some people that just means there is more to see and do, while others prefer the quieter vibe in Cambridge.
