I don't know why I waited so long to buy an ice fishing sonar. Completely changes the game. Love my Marcum but I've fished with Humminbird's before. Anything will work in my book.
***** Whew them's some pretty fish Rojo. That's a good day fishing for sure. Totally enjoyed every minute of this video and glad I didn't have to wait 3 years for it. Awesome! Noticed the famous Dr.Pepper too!
Good looking Cutts! Funny thing about the Dr Pepper...it just about froze solid then I made the mistake of opening it up fast and it instantly turned into a Dr Pepper slushy explosion all over my face and coat. Dropped it so many times grabbing my pole because a fish was biting. Got to have some ice cold Dr Pepper when you're fishing though.
Thanks for showing the tackle you use and the technique. Just getting into ice fishing and this stuff helps a lot...makes me look a little less stupid when I am out fishing.
Glad I could help. I'll keep giving everyone the few tips and tricks that I use in my videos. I'm also always looking for things to make specific videos for so if you have any ideas let me know and I'll try to make a video.
***** Too bad I can't like this more than once. Back again and enjoyed this as much the second time as the first. Awesome video Rojo. Looking forward to more. A2W
Really?! I wish I was catching 80% Rainbows. I love catching the Cutthroats but more Rainbows for the grill/smoker would be nice. I keep trying different locations up there but always catch a lot more Cutts than Bows.
I know, I know, I've been slacking. I saw some pictures of Shifty fishing Current Creek a few days ago. Surprised I haven't seen any videos from him yet.
MrRojoneck thanks a lot for posting these videos! They inspired me to give ice fishing a try despite the sheer amount of stuff I need to buy to get on the ice. I especially appreciate that you show tackle and fish bites -- very helpful for noobs like myself. BTW, you mentioned you park at "marina" a few times. Did you mean Strawberry Bay or Soldier Creek Marina?
You definitely need to give ice fishing a try and believe it or not, it's not too expensive to get started. You can buy a rod/reel combo starting from $10+. Sure they may not be the nicest rod or smoothed reel (the reels are terrible!) but they work. Buy a used auger online from a classified add, get a few jigs and lures, a couple of worms and go out and give it a try. I was talking about the main Marina. I need to try other places though, the main Marina tends to attract too many humans.
***** I went last Sun and caught 4 cutts in about 4 hours of fishing (2-6pm). Liked it very much even though the fish weren't fighting much compared to my summer catches. Still, can't wait to get back before the ice comes off! P. S. 1/32oz white paddle bug and pink wax tail jig worked for me (yeah I brought all the lures you ever showed in your videos :) ).
What's even more weird is we catch a lot of really small fish as well. Only icefishing I catch this small of fish. Throughout the whole open water season all I catch are nice cuts with some bows.
This is such a new thing for me!!! I have only seen this type of fishing done in the movies (Grumpy Old Men) and they had the shacks set up on the ice. Never really seen this done in real life before. Do people use the shacks like they do in the movies? What is the point of the sonar?? just to let you know when to drop the line? Mate, have so many questions about this, looks like such a cool outing (pardon the pun) Thanks for sharing this, I really appreciate it!! I wish I could like this more than once, just like a few of the other guys commenting!! Really just blown away by this!!!
Yes people do use shacks. In states like Minnesota, Wisconsin, North/South Dakota where it's extremely cold people will put shack out on the ice for months. They have beds, kitchens and little bathroom areas in them. People will live out of then while they ice fish during the winter. They'll drive the trucks and trailers out on the ice to bing the comforts I home with them. I have a pop out tent that I can set up, turn on my propane heater and so in the tent in a t-shirt while it's a blizzard outside. Just one thing to stay dry and comfortable. The sonar is extremely helpful. It automatically and instantly tells you the depth of the water you're fishing in, it shows you where your jog/bait is on the screen and you also see fish show up on the screen that are within the sonar range. You can see where the fish is in relation to your jig/bait and get ready for the bite. You can also tell if the fish are interested in your jig/bait or if they're just swimming by. Sonar is awesome and completely enhances how many fish you catch while ice fishing. It doesn't attract fish in any way but allows you to see what the fish are doing. Hard to explain but trust me, it's awesome sauce.
You've never ice fished Strawberry?! I hadn't ever ice fished up there until about two years ago and now I love it. As far as setup, I'd recommend light action rods with at least 4lb line and no more than 6lb line. I use one rod to "dead stick" (drop the jig/bait down and let it sit) and jig with another. I've had good success with jigs tipped with a wax worm. Eagle Claw "Paddle Bugs" (white and green have been the best colors) , VMC "Wax Tail" (orange/yellow worked really good). I've tried ice flies and never caught a single fish. I've tried a flasher setup with a last, aster and ice fly and never caught a fish. Seems like jigs are the way to go. Some days they like the jigs jumping up and down, some days they like them holdings still, others just a little flicker so the tails jiggle a little bit. The trick is never the same, you have to find out what the fish want that day. If it's a sunny day remember that the fish can see your shadow and any movements you make. They can hear you talking, laughing, burping and farting. If you have any kiddos with you, try to keep them quiet and holding still. If it's sunny a tent will conceal you movements inside the tent but not sounds. Get away from people, snowmobile and 4 wheeler traffic. I haven't caught a single fish in deep water (20'+). All the fish I catch through the ice have been 6'-15' of water. If you see some people slaying the fish, don't be afraid to approach them and politely ask what they're doing. I've never been turned down when I've approached people and I've never turned any one down who's respectful and I'll open my tackle box and hand away any of my stuff once they pass the respect test. There's so many tips and tricks I can't think of any others. These basics will definitely help you. Just pray the fish are hungry the day you're on the ice. Have fun, let me know how you do.
That's incredible... how do you stay warm sat out on the lake there? I hope it's not that icy when I arrive in April!! I want you to teach me to fish yee master rojo! ;)
Usually stay warm by shivering and shaking like a hooker in church all day long. Once you get numb you can't feel anything so the quicker your body gets numb the better. The ice will be gone by the time you show up in April. We'll probably be riding in the mountains by then too. Winter has been extremely mild this year. See you soon mi amigo.
Found my snow shoes looking for my jiggin' pole. I'll be there in 8 hours. Looks like 4" of ice. Yikes. 8' of ice used to scare me. What was the temp looks a little warm.
Hi ya +MrRojoneck, I know it was last year that you posted this vid. I thought it was fantastic nonetheless. Quick question. I've always avoided going to Strawberry thinking one had to have a snowmobile to get on the water. What entry points and how long to walk in?
No Cutthroats in Ontario?! They're delicious. Taste just like any other trout. They eat well so the meat is dark orange and very flavorful. Lately I've been marina ing them in an honey orange marinade recipe then baking them in the oven for 20 minutes and eating the fillets over rice. I like it a lot. Even the in laws who don't are for fish eat it and like it. Nothing like a tasty fresh fish for dinner!
Trick is you need to get as far away from people as possible. Get away from the snowmobile and 4 wheeler traffic and big crowds of people. I park at the marina and start hiking 10-15 minutes away from people and machines. Stay shallow 8-14' of water. Try to keep quiet and not make a lot of movement as the fish can see your shadows and hear you talk and walk around. This video I was south west of the marina about a 10 minute hike across the ice. Easy walking just walk a little bit farther to get away from people. Weekends are super busy so you'll have to walk even a little farther. The Marina is the busiest place, maybe try other places around the lake that are less busy. Soldier creek, currant creek or over by the dam on the south east side.
I started fishing at about 7:30, just before sunrise. Yes, sonar makes a HUGE difference. I will catch more fish when fishing with a sonar. I've had the best success fishing with plastic jigs like Eagle "Claw Paddle", VMC "Wax Tail" and Maniac Lures "Gizzy Bug". Tip all with a wax worm and start fishing.
I've never caught a Kokanee and just this year I started doing some research to see how to fish for them. Sounds like they congregate in the narrows and other deep water areas. Long walk for me since I don't have a snowmobile or 4 wheeler. My goal this year is to catch a Kokanee through the ice. It'll take a necks since I have no idea what I'm doing though.
Length, not sure. I think they're only in one length. I have both light and medium action GX2's. In this video I was using two GX2 Light action rods with 4lb line.
Nice video and some great fish! Next time I would recommend splitting the video into two parts just because it would be easier to watch in 2 10 min parts. Just a suggestion!
Howdy Dave! Good to hear from you. Always not watching your music videos. I need to use some in my videos. The ol KLR is in the garage wrapped up in a heated blanket. Not much off roading during winter with everything under snow and I do plenty of road riding at work so I don't do much road riding on the KLR in winter. Plus busy with work crap and other things and usually going fishing in the free time this time of year. How you enjoying the KTM?
***** Awesome man. Glad you are doing what you enjoy ! The KTM is incredible...now I need to recover from it reminding me I am not 20 anymore ;) I am ready, the bike will be about another month...but we have tons of snow here anyways, as well.... I will be picking up a 125 KTM EXC any day though...for something to throw around the woods ! I will be checking in on you here...via your channel. Be safe brother ! ,
Lost my GoPro and shotgun mount while Dove hunting in September. Due to my busy work schedule during the fall season I was only able to go out duck hunting twice. Only shot 4 birds between the 2 hunts. Thus no duck hunting videos. :(
Thanks for sharing! Can't tell you how much I miss jigging with my Humminbird flasher.
I don't know why I waited so long to buy an ice fishing sonar. Completely changes the game. Love my Marcum but I've fished with Humminbird's before. Anything will work in my book.
You make it look sooooo easy, and you always catch BIG fish. I am the dink master this year. I always enjoy your videos.

Enjoy it a third time by coming down here (again ;] ) and going out with me.
***** I'm sure you've seen enough of me and had your fill by now.
Great vid. It's cool how where you fished you caught a lot of nice cuts and where I fish we catch 80 percent rainbows. I love strawberry!
Really?! I wish I was catching 80% Rainbows. I love catching the Cutthroats but more Rainbows for the grill/smoker would be nice. I keep trying different locations up there but always catch a lot more Cutts than Bows.
Good stuff man. Anxious to get out this season!
Ava says, "That man is good at catching big fish!"
I wish! Funny to hear your kiddos are watching the video. When are we going fishing?
***** Perhaps we could do some riding and some fishing? Man you do the fishing, though... I have traumatic stories :)
eveRide ADV Those are the best eveRide stories!
Sweet! I was wondering when we would see the first ice fishing video of 2015.
I let Shifty know it's posted up.
I know, I know, I've been slacking. I saw some pictures of Shifty fishing Current Creek a few days ago. Surprised I haven't seen any videos from him yet.
Beautiful looking fish indeed!
Not too bad Samcro?! How's winter in Sweden treating you?
I´ve been shoveling snow today for the first time this winter, so that´s a good sign :)
That's some awesome video there buddy! Makes me wish I was there with you again!
Let's go!
MrRojoneck thanks a lot for posting these videos! They inspired me to give ice fishing a try despite the sheer amount of stuff I need to buy to get on the ice. I especially appreciate that you show tackle and fish bites -- very helpful for noobs like myself.

Wow, those are some beautiful fish! Great video!
Gorgeous colors on the Cutthroats. It's a blast hooking up on some big Cutthroats on ultra light tackle.
Good catch rate at Strawberry this year!
Always a good catching rate through the ice at Strawberry.
What's even more weird is we catch a lot of really small fish as well. Only icefishing I catch this small of fish. Throughout the whole open water season all I catch are nice cuts with some bows.

Grab your stuff and come on up. I'll take you out on the ice anytime. It was 14* when I go there in the morning an warmed up to 40* when I left.
Hi ya +MrRojoneck, I know it was last year that you posted this vid. I thought it was fantastic nonetheless. Quick question. I've always avoided going to Strawberry thinking one had to have a snowmobile to get on the water. What entry points and how long to walk in?
The main marina, soldier creek, the Ladders are all very short walks. Most places are very accessible and won't need a snowmobile or 4 wheeler.
Nice hook sets, how are those cut throat for eating? any good? We don't have those here in Ontario
No Cutthroats in Ontario?! They're delicious. Taste just like any other trout. They eat well so the meat is dark orange and very flavorful. I will be up this weekend. Where do you usually fish? I don't want to drive 3 hours and get skunked like last time!

I'd love to but I'll be up at Bear Lake for the Cisco run (hopefully!). Good luck, rip some lips.
At what time did u start fishing , do the fish finder really make a big difference while fishing and what type of lures did u use?

Went up to Soldier Creek today and caught my very first Kokanee. It was only about 17" long but for my first one, I'll take it.
So what is the length and the action of your Ugly Stick GX2 rod?
Length, not sure. I think they're only in one length. I have both light and medium action GX2's. In this video I was using two GX2 Light action rods with 4lb line.
Nice video and some great fish! Next time I would recommend splitting the video into two parts just because it would be easier to watch in 2 10 min parts. Just a suggestion!
Didn't have enough time to make two videos so just threw it all into one this time. Normally I would split it.
OK cool. Thanks for the video!
Took a while for that first fish to realize he was fee to go!
I don't know why some of them fight to stay under water and then fight to stay out of it. It's never made sense to me.
My pecker shriveled up watching this cold ass shit when are you going to be back on your motorcycle sir good to see you again by the way

I like that you don't use profanity. I like to ice fish Strawberry, but I don't have near the success you do.
