I'm an INFJ, but I really resonate with the point of mastery and solitude, though for me it's more like a jack of all trades situation. I recently moved to a new city and while living alone, I'm trying to fix as much as I can by myself. I Also don't like being reliant on other people to get something done and am trying to become a universal "handyman". Obviously ISTP and INFJ are different in other aspects, but I really think we can be quite similar in that aspect since we both have Ni and Ti, only flipped in the stack. And I really like ISTPs for this reason (even if they might not like me and my Fe ways. :P ) EDIT: to add the final bit and clear up typos.
Same for me. Yep, I can rely on safety net of people to get me through stuff that I don't like, but after all it seems silly, what prevents me from doing it on my own? And relying on faulty systems is low-key unbearable, there's always this exaggerated existential dread of some destructive randomness showing up at my door (by mistake?) and ruining my life forever 👀 I may speculate ISTPs have the same motivations to get mastery & independence swapped for people and systems By the way, it's interesting that you emphasized jack of all trades situation. I think P types have their efforts even more scattered and they're fine with it, while dominant Ni demands synergy and consistency in everything we do, "well I'm all over the place, but at least I fulfill this one archetype"
@@yananykyforova6754 Yeah, I definitely recognise the demand for synergy x) I've thought about doing a bunch of creative stuff like learning piano, drawing and learning a new language, but I can't seem to find a way to combine them. So I feel like I need to choose One of those things if I'm going to become really good at it, but I Want to do all three. (Or find a way to combine them x)
I doubt they hate our Fe so much. I know they hate and admire ENFJ's Fe with all their being, but from what I observe my ISTP's friend. They seem to be comfortable with our Fe if we utilise Ti a lot with them. I think they appreciate that we slow teach/coax them the importance of developing their inferior function (Fe).
@@ZNIR777 Yeah, fair enough. I've heard Nathan talk about how they don't like playing the Fe game and that they sometimes don't trust people who seem to be "socially slippery". But it's true that we have and value Ti, and maybe our Fe (with Ni) can help us see that we shouldn't/don't need to use "Fe- tricks" on the ISTPs. (Ironically using Fe to NOT use Fe x).
My brother is an ISTP and this is so accurate! I’m wondering which type my dad is. His decisions are very thought out, but still based on personal values. He’s an ISXP and this could describe him as well Edit: My brother actually taught himself about 80% of what he knows about mechanics and those kind of things. He converted a normal car into a convertible at 14. He didn’t do (that) well in school up until high school, but he’s still very intelligent and he loves all the things you spoke about in this video!
could be an ISFP. I'm an ISTP, brother is an ISFP, he more has personal values that directed him earlier in life. It has taken me much longer to tap into my feelings and values. Hes also less analytical and nerdy
@@suzdwyer4577 My dad is kind of analytical, but his decisions are pretty personally based. He just drops a client when he doesn’t feel right or overwhelmed or if the client is a little complicated to deal with. He’s very good with people, but sometimes he steps on somebody’s toes.
He could be an ISTP then based on what you shared. I think ISTPs doesn't like resenting or regretting anything so they would rarely do something they don't want.m, rather than do it and resent the situation later. I'm a female ISTP, and I did bad in school in the sense that I don't participate in pretty much anything, would compete in Math but would still have a low grade because of lack of requirements. I got the "wasting your potential cause you're lazy" reputation just because I didn't do the things I "should" but don't want to because I'm not interested, and I don't see the point or need it at the time or just simply because I'm in a bad public school where very few that actually care about teafhing and are doing it effectively.
just found out I'm an ISTP and I related to this video a lot. I love teaching myself things at home and figuring things out by doing them myself. (being an ISTP does not mean I'm some type of mechanic!) for exp., baking. I love starting recipes from scratch and seeing what I can add or change to make treats taste better!
The other 5 members of my family went skiing and snowboarding for a few days. My handicap kept me home but my husband set me up with food provisions. I rarely left the house. I was in an Introvert Heaven. I finally had time for my new book and interesting videos. I kept in touch via a smart phone so I was good, except for the one time they sent video of themselves skiing. That really hurt to watch since I loved it the one time I had done it before the kids were born. But I can’t deny that the freedom to explore my interests at my own pace without distracting demands was a wonderful experience I’ll never forget and probably wouldn’t have traded - even for skiing.
I can relate to this as an INTP. Some of the happiest moments of my life were simple moments when I was alone. One time, I came home from work and all my roommates were gone. I ate a burger, fries, and a coke on the couch watching HGTV. Alone. All to myself. :)
I resonate hard with the autodidact description. I need to understand things for myself. Many people are bothered by this although they claim to love people who seek knowledge and are intelligent UNTIL it's an ISTP doing the pursuing thereof. Being extremely driven by my own pursuits that involve thinking and understanding requires a lifetime. Why are ISTPs not extended the same courtesies that other types are afforded throughout the world? It's like enjoying solving the world's problem's alone is a crime. It's not my fault I was born a 'life hack'. 🤷 Ti-Se-Ni>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Fe lol
I am a game developer that has become the most competent person in almost every aspect of that trade. It is hard to find any other person that knows all of the technical skills that I have achieved through self teaching. Nothing makes me more happy than to be able to build everything about a game on my own, and only allow people to help if they have proved loyalty, enthusiasm, and skill.
Glad you enjoyed it! If you haven't already seen them there are quite a few other ISTP videos on here as well that go into more depth about them ~ Nathan
I'm impressed. Formal education is essential, like the solid foundation of a new building. After that, the process of building one's education begins and it's the best part. Peace.
Depending on how formal you might mean, I do not think I agree that formal education is essential. I definitely do not think one's process of building one's education needs to wait until *after* formal education ends.
@@thatstupidartist3410lol, I'm INTP. But I do have an ISTP husband. Maybe he's rubbing off on me. When I was younger, I didn't think too much about it. I was mostly fine with school. Except in high school/college, I did not like waking up early. I can just understand at this point that there are plenty of ways to learn than just formal education.
Based. I feel like a bit of the drive towards mastery also has to do with wanting people to admire me though. I think what you said about freedom makes sense with that too, because if I can be excellent at something then no one can question my ability and I can move without restriction/barrier. I used to be into philosophy more but I kind of gave up because I'm failing to see a point in it a lot of the time (unless typology is considered philosophy lmao, then I guess this is the exception). And while I definitely have an ability to learn on my own, and will learn on my own, I still seek teachers because (i) for physical learning (i.e. skateboarding), it's good to have someone to observe and have them point out your failures/improvable areas, and (ii) for mental learning (i.e. math), I can't read for shit so I just have to watch people do it until I understand, and (iii) for all learning, guided development from someone who knows best practice can be helpful in the long run and save time, and I tend to want mastery as quick as possible. Though having said that, I still prefer an approach where they "teach" me (demonstrate) and I go off and try to figure out how they did it. But sometimes hands on teaching is helpful too; for physical things that have a mental barrier, or for when you're just not getting it.
This describes the nuances of my experience as an ISTP extremely well. I find this channel to be the most accurate when it comes to classic MBTI descriptions of the types. Thank you for putting out amazing content!
I am convinced you know when I’m researching a specific type and then you post a video about that type. No lie, this is like the third time this has happened.
You know me so well 😁and yep, knowledge absolutely has to be applicable to my real world, personal experience for me to accept and trust it. Most of which is usually always theories, and world view/ philosophies that are thousands of years old!
The test told me I'm a Istp but i never thought that I am beacouse they are super analíticas and I'm not but from the mindset of Istp about mastery and freedom I realized that I do relate a lot to this mindset. Overall great video and you gain a subscriber
As ISTP I do love it. Never used to think that my level of learning something (something I like eed to know) was kinda "hypnotic", but sometimes in a small convo I do say some way too deep information about something and prob just blink in "isn't that like... basic?". So yeah. Totally true. And I know that I have some issues, but I can't stand people who would stand infront of you and asking for advice on some random stuff. You... you have phone in your hand, so... LOOK THAT UP, please. They could spend some time on learning new things too, actually. And I gotta say - after that video about famous last words... It just stuck in my head, because those thoughts just got a verbal form. Love it, but stop (nah)
@@3Zeppoli No, I love explaining and make hard things easy by keeping it simple. Its about people who won't even try to understand something first and would just come to you for literally everything bc "you smart, you do it instead". I find that behavior irritating
Interesting istp video, spot on as always Nathan! I relate to istp a lot cause my cognitive stack. Still not sure what my type is due my 4 highest function are Ne, Ni, Ti, Se in no particular order
My INTP (former chef) partner brings me coffee and meals in my office on days when I can’t tear myself away from whatever design problem I’m trying to solve. Sometimes it’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It’s his love language and I appreciate the fuck out him.
As an ISTP i couldn't agree more especially "Mastery and Freedom" part. I don't give a F regarding buerocrats and workplace politics. If it doesn't impact me, I'm ok with it. As soon as it impact me, that's also fine, ....I quit with a new higher payout job. And most of the time those organizations try to recruit me back, but.... too late bro.
it's funny because my mom asked "would you rather make mistakes or be perfect" she said "I'd rather make mistakes so I can learn how to be better" I said "if you were perfect, you wouldn't have to learn anything" if im not perfect enough at it then I dont want to do it
To me it is MMA at a young age i was able to box and my coach would said i have a high affinity for combat for my age and the training actually help me a lot to learn discipline and always remain cool and composed in high tension situations so i kept pursuing it t to the point where I could spend 3 hours on the gym without realizing unfortunately life has taken me many places and i don't currently train anymore but hopefully I can get back to it once I'm done with college
It's always comical to me when people equate the two since they're opposites of each other. One starts with some random arbitrary detail and draws conclusions and the other requires actually studying the person then classifying them ~ Nathan
Yes they certainly can! I think it crosses over into stereotypes to say that ISTPs hate socialising. When they find people that they connect with then they can be as social as any type! ~ Nathan
I mistyped myself as INTP for years... now I'm in a very good and stable place in my life and I can't imagine myself as anything but ISTP. It's frustrating because a lot of your personality traits can't shine within certain circumstances... Such as depression. I didn't know how independent I am until I started taking care of myself and supporting myself financially. I had forgotten how adventurous, curious and tactile I am, because I never left home. I forgot how to be assertive and chill because of my constant anxiety. Then once I got my life in order, I was so puzzled when I tried out some tests again and suddenly couldn't get anything but ISTP no matter how hard I tried. A mechanic, wtf? Taking things apart? Getting my hands dirty? It sounded nothing like me... INTP sounded more like me, but I couldn't get that result anymore... Even INFP sounded more like me. It was a fun journey to self discovery.
Autodidact? I never new that there was a word for people who prefer to be self-learners. I went to an independent study progran after 11th grade in highschool due to COVID. (im 19 now.) ever since then ive always loved going out of my way to learn and do things on my own and dreaded instruction in traditional settings.
0:03 I am an ISTP but tbh I find self study difficult. I don't really like "traditional study" though, and like teachers that are more flexible and visual with their teaching. (w/videos and active teaching) rather than textbooks
Which is weird because ISTP's and INFP's have very much opposite attitudes and mental processes. INFP's being emotional, idealistic and imaginative and ISTP'S being logical, realistic and pragmatic. Not to say they are completely different but they have very different approaches to life. That being said, I oddly had the same problem. I think it's because both types can often times be too stuck in their own heads at times and that can cause confusion between the two types. An ISTP that daydreams a lot might mistake themselves for an INxP.
@@SamiShah2004 exactly, literally all their cognitive functions are opposed! Infp: Fi Ne Si Te Istp: Ti Se Ni Fe But after watching some TH-cam videos I found both personality described as a "weird" personality, and they always do what they "want" or "think" or "know" what's best without hurting their environment or the people around them ... so they can be pretty similar from the outside i guess...
My husband is an istp, my daughter is an infp. They are each other's demon but they get along great. They've told me they bond over their hatred of others and their demands.
@Ipsita Chatteejee yea, true even if some can't understand that kind of affection... in my case I think the fact that I'm a 9w8 (that is called the "peacemaker" personality) makes me look softer and the fact that I always avoid conflicts makes me look kinder or something like that... it's true that my cognitive functions matches better with the ISTP personality, but I do hive off INFP vibes ...
Once again, your ISTP description has me momentarily questioning if I am one. I know this is weird, I know my ENFP self shares no cognitive preferences with them. But behaviorally I am all these things and I am motivated by these things to a T. Yet when I look at the purely cognitive aspects I do see that the flow of taking in information and deciding how to use it is ENFP. However, if I were to rank my next 4 functions of my strengths/what my brain prefers next, it would be Ti,Se,Ni,Fe. I have never related to having those subconscious functions in the supposed order an ENFP would have them. So I guess I have an ISTP subconscious. That’s all I can hypothesize.
ask yourself and others close to you for their opinion on what they think you struggle with mostly. Sometimes it can be hard for anyone to see themselves initially hence why many people are mistyped in the community. I mean every video type description done well can make anyone feel as if they relate because a lot of the highlights are shared however most ISTP's (unless developed in their later years have a SERIOUS Fe problem most throughout their lives that other types think they know but they truly don't fully understand what it is to deal with it. Just thought this could help. Look for your struggles moreso than your strengths
@@RevRideReason they would definitely say I have an Si struggle more than an Fe struggle. And I would too. The Si struggle has caused actual problems. The Fe struggle is more like a secret inside me. I know I am an ENFP. I just also resonate with ISTP, especially as I get older. And as I have matured, I do get increasing feedback that I appear aloof whereas the negative feedback used to be that I was “too nice”.
@@RevRideReason Oh that’s interesting that your mother is an ENFP. I’d love to hear how my son would describe me. Actually I kinda know though! An Si struggle…it looks like the ways I have sabotaged my own intense desire for freedom…like piles of unpaid bills and taxes…half filled out forms…. Although my house is clean.
You have me wondering if the younger of my two brothers is an ISTP after all. I guess I always looked at him more as an ISTJ. But he is VERY self-directed.
I have an ISTJ friend, we are quite similar, but she is far more perfectionistic, disciplined and more consistent routine. I'm more easy going and only driven and achieve well when I find a passion and focus on it (which can be sporadic)
Do you think it's possible to be ISTP but not a lone wolf? I'm pretty sociable, I like fun and talk, I'm not nerdy, but I do love to master my skills. The only ISTP thing which doesn't fit me is that "lone wolf" philosophy. Of course I need some alone time from time to time, I hike alone sometimes, but other than that not really.
ISTPs like company being with other people and working or socialising with them isn't a problem, but and this is something that I realised by the time I was in my late teens. If the group wanted to go off and do something that I didn't want to do then I had no issues in telling them that I would go do something else and meetup later. To them those moments of just going off on my own were unusual, to me it was just a personal freedom/choice thing. It wasn't something that I did all the time, but I never took a second thought about it when I went and did my own thing. ISTPs will tend to prefer a small group of friends over a large crowd though going to a big event with that small group is fine, big events hammer the senses and we dig those live it now moments. Now I'm older then I still like social and group events, but I also know that after those events I will need some alone time to just be myself and relax. You mentioned hiking alone and that is a strong ISxP trait the ability to enjoy the both complete solitude and the filling of the senses from the environment in which you are in.
I don’t really resonate and fall into line with everything that has been said here but it’s like your in track, it might also be that I’m and undeveloped ISTP. Well I’m not your typical stereotyped ISTP, when u meet me and how I go about my daily life you’d probably type me as an ENFP or such ...
the fact that you said istps can often seem like xntx types, and me being an istp mistyping myself as an intp is crazy ( i mean i understand that its because we have the same dominant and inferior functions but still )
Not crazy, when I have time to be lazy then I am much more INTP. When I need to get stuff done or my world changes suddenly, I revert to ITSP. Think of who you are in times of stress or change and you will likely get a better read on your actual type.
An INFJ here, I like an ISTP friend and would pretty much like to take it further.. But I want to make sure first I fully understand him and make the calculations for us if we are really compatible or not.. Well, any infj/istp partners here?
It would help if you didn’t read into things we say: assume nothing; just ask. On the flip side of that don’t expect the ISTP to read into what you say. We really do take things at face value. Personally, these relationships are okay if they are not close; I can only take them in doses.🙂 (ISTP)
For ISTP, a majority of everyday life situations are emotionally neutral, i.e. we simply don't have an emotional agenda for most things. Something to keep in mind as far as compatibility if you're a feelings person. ISTP will forge relationships through sharing interests and activities, rather than sharing feelings.
@@audreyhowler my istp is pretty much caring and deeply loving but he doesn't show it directly.. But yeah. He shares activities and personal info about himself.. I'm definitely a feely person, as long as I can he's not so comfortable with affection I don't know how to bring it up.
I constantly question if I am an istp or intp. Deep down Ik I am just doubting and too paranoid. I am most likely an intp through and through but it’s so hard to not overthink it
I think I have a video on here comparing both of the types but it’s still a good move to check of the individual videos because they go more in depth. The cognitive function I would focus the most on is Se. Try to develop your understanding of that and see whether it’s a natural thing for you or something that is more of a blindspot ~ Nathan

EDIT: to add the final bit and clear up typos.
Same for me. Yep, I can rely on safety net of people to get me through stuff that I don't like, but after all it seems silly, what prevents me from doing it on my own? And relying on faulty systems is low-key unbearable, there's always this exaggerated existential dread of some destructive randomness showing up at my door (by mistake?) and ruining my life forever 👀 I may speculate ISTPs have the same motivations to get mastery & independence swapped for people and systems
By the way, it's interesting that you emphasized jack of all trades situation. I think P types have their efforts even more scattered and they're fine with it, while dominant Ni demands synergy and consistency in everything we do, "well I'm all over the place, but at least I fulfill this one archetype"
INFJ. I also relate to someone else bringing me delicious food and beverages. Also, wouldn't say no to a neck massage.
@@yananykyforova6754
Yeah, I definitely recognise the demand for synergy x)
I've thought about doing a bunch of creative stuff like learning piano, drawing and learning a new language, but I can't seem to find a way to combine them.
I've studied some neurology, so I know how the brain works when you're learning something, and unfortnately doing Any of those 3 means "re-writing" parts of how your brain works, BUT the knowledge doesn't carry over.
@@ZNIR777
Yeah, fair enough.
I really love being an istp and I find your videos so relatable. Top job man thank you.
Thank you! ~ Nathan
My brother is an ISTP and this is so accurate! I’m wondering which type my dad is. His decisions are very thought out, but still based on personal values. He’s an ISXP and this could describe him as well
Edit: My brother actually taught himself about 80% of what he knows about mechanics and those kind of things.
ISTJ?
@@madyawn1347 Probably not. He's making way too many assumptions to be an ISTJ and he’s not as consistent in his work efforts as one
(being an ISTP does not mean I'm some type of mechanic!)
for exp., baking.
That description was prophetic and magical.

ISTP: Thinker without the h. I'll see myself out-
The quote from Robert Greene is particularly accurate, at least for me.

Formal education is essential, like the solid foundation of a new building. After that, the process of building one's education begins and it's the best part. Peace.
I love that analogy, totally agree ~ Nathan
Depending on how formal you might mean, I do not think I agree that formal education is essential. I definitely do not think one's process of building one's education needs to wait until *after* formal education ends.
@@lishayost44 ur comment is so ISTP
Mastery and Freedom - two of my favorite things lol. I own that Robert Greene book. Thanks for the vid.

Overall great video and you gain a subscriber
As ISTP I do love it. Never used to think that my level of learning something (something I like
eed to know) was kinda "hypnotic", but sometimes in a small convo I do say some way too deep information about something and prob just blink in "isn't that like... basic?".
That's too bad because the best way for an istp to develop and integrate is through teaching.

So thats why I often enjoy listening to NTs ... and more often I consider myself an NT more than an ST
As an ISTP i couldn't agree more especially "Mastery and Freedom" part.
I don't give a F regarding buerocrats and workplace politics. If it doesn't impact me, I'm ok with it. As soon as it impact me, that's also fine, ....I quit with a new higher payout job. And most of the time those organizations try to recruit me back, but.... too late bro.
it's funny because my mom asked "would you rather make mistakes or be perfect"
she said "I'd rather make mistakes so I can learn how to be better"
I said "if you were perfect, you wouldn't have to learn anything"

Istps can like socialising sometimes tho right?? Like if they find someone that shares a love for their active hobby or something
And is at a similar level ofc
Yes they certainly can! I think it crosses over into stereotypes to say that ISTPs hate socialising. When they find people that they connect with then they can be as social as any type! ~ Nathan
Istps can socialize well, however it feels draining most of the time, especially with people you don't connect with.
Why did it take me so long to listen to myself? Like I followed narcissist my whole life here I am living on my own doing what the fuck I want now.
Great video Nathan!
As an infj I admit that I respect and admire the istp a lot
Me: literally duct taping my broken headphones while watching this video
Great Video, Autodidact is exactly it.
I used to type myself as an infp but growing up and learning more about Mbti and cognitive functions I'm pretty sure i am an ISTP... a "kind" one ...
Infp: Fi Ne Si Te
Istp: Ti Se Ni Fe
But after watching some TH-cam videos I found both personality described as a "weird" personality, and they always do what they "want" or "think" or "know" what's best without hurting their environment or the people around them ... so they can be pretty similar from the outside i guess...
I think Im an INTJ, but I feel like this describes me better.
INTJ-ISTP is a common mistype actually. You should look into it.
Both have introverted intuition. Test again?
