Membership of the Chinese Communist Party reached 99 million in 2023 and is on track to reach 100 million by the end of 2024. But the rate of growth continues to slow, according to the latest official tally by the party’s Central Organisation Department. In line with tradition, the data was released on the eve of July 1 celebrations marking the party’s founding in 1921.

The Chinese Communist Party was founded in 1921 because it was inspired by the Bolshevik revolutionary movement and coincided with the founding of the Soviet Union's Communist Party.

100m wouldn't be too surprising, since party membership is also tied to employment prospects. Lots of people want to become a civil servant lately due to the high job stability, and party membership is required. Teachers have to be party members too, etc.

I don't think US govt is as competent and capable as the Chinese govt. We Chinese average folks support the govt firmly as it makes our lives better in such a fast speed and it also makes the country strong. In fact, I have failed twice in sitting the Civil Service Exam, which is hyper-competitive and only the brightest minds in China can become govt workers.

if you had sat the Civil Service Exam in China and got a taste of how difficult it was in terms of brain-power requirement against mind-blowing numbers of competitors, then you would have realized the CCP were actually a mega elite network made up of the brighest brains in China. As a master's degree holder educated in England, I still failed twice in the the Civil Service Exam in China which were very demanding in the comprehensive capabilities of candidates across mathmatics, logic reasoning, data analysis, literature, history, politics.... I don't think govt workers of other countries can match their Chinese counterparts in brains.

In the US power is divided between thre branches: judicative, executive and legislative. Additionally even in sum those branches not even close have the same power as the ccp has that cant be checked. The US system has many issue, but to claim that china is more free, the citizens have more say or rights etc. is total delusion. Dictatorships with totalitarian governments ALWAYS have insane party membership numbers. The reason is that its a dictatorship of one party and often this party is controled by one person. While there is power struggle this struggle isnt based on formal procedures.

How is a shrinking population with moderating economic growth going to be able to pay for and support an ever growing bureaucracy and number of party members?
They can't. The Chinese Provincial governments have already slashed salaries for government employees and reduced compensation in some cases. It will only get worse
It’s not a growing bureaucracy. They just community workers. Being a party member doesn’t meant they hold office. Also, China is far better equipped to handle shrinking population than, say, Europe.
