Great review! Thanks for validating my observations. The Nikon 24-70 VR F-mount is a very soft lens at 70mm 2.8, away from the center. Good to see Nikon now have a 24-70 that compares with the Canon. Sold my F-mount last week.
After watching your video I bought 24-70 vr f mount version. A very little difference of sharpness hardly matter to me. The color renditions and the contrasts of f mount is still best in the business from last 13 years. Also the digitally corrected sharpness is inbuilt in z mount lenses. Mostly z are digitally enhanced which they still have to prove its durability and ruggedness.
Thanks, as someone slowly moving from F (D5) to Z and looking to replace a tired 24-70 this was really interesting. Sorry if I missed it, but did you try the F native on a D850 and the Z on the Z7? I know it should be the same regardless of the adapter but it would be interesting to rule that out as well.
Don't you , guys, think, that it was something weird with the focus? For ex. first couple of images (24@2.8). I definetily see that the focus on the right side (F-mount) is FURTHER. Although, the DOF at the left side seems to be WIDER , as it goes when you stop down. This example is not first i`ve seen. What do you think?
There are a lot of pieces of art made with the F-mount system. Now suddenly this gear is not good anymore because of the Z. The only truth is that a lot of photographs that have made the story of photography are out of focus. Food for thought.
I've also noticed the 24-70/2.8 VR is a bit "meh" at 70mm, particularly at close range. I've been through 2 of them, the second was much better, but they both had it. Tbh the construction on the lens is a bit disappointing, when you turn the focus or zoom ring the image shifts up and down a bit, so there's some play in the mechanism. Thanks for the vid and good job with the testing!
Could the problem be with the camera and lens matching? i.e., could the F mount lens on Nikon D850 perform just as well as the Z mount lens on Nikon Z7?
Someone answer this please, it is the obvious question. When you view an image at 2:1, obviously the adaptor affects. Try the F mount on an F mount camera, and the D850 has the same MP count as well
Hi Ricci, thank you for this interesting video. But this result is to be expected: 1) the F-mount is an older lens and 2) the Z mount is far superior to the F mount. I would be interested in the Z mount comparison between the f2.8 and f4 lenses. Also, even with the "bad" results of the F mount lens, no one will ever notice that unless you really print huge (and I mean huge) prints.
Had my f mount 24-70 for about 3 years. After seeing this makes me want to upgrade even more when can budget for it. I did lots of stacking to help with soft spots but with a sharper lens I won't have to.
Those are really startling differences. The only thing I wonder about is that these were at relatively close range. How different are the lenses once you start getting out towards infinity - landscape rather than portrait distances?
Good job. I got these same results using the 24-70mm f4. I just picked up the new f2.8 S Z lens and thought that it too would yield the same results, since it is even sharper than my f4 S Z lens. The f4 will be up on eBay next week. I just love the Z system.
Very good comparison. Still have the F mount lens bc I'm not using the new toys. You compared the Z one with the F mount model E which has VR. A lot of people said that the G version (no vr) is better than the E. Would be interesting if you give the old lens a shot and see if what the people say is true
Wow. I think I will be sending beck my fF mount lens which I just bought, and investing in the much more pricey z lens. I did not think the sharpness difference would be this much. Thank you!
Thanks for another great video! I have this lens on order - hope it shows up soon. In my experience over many years and many F-mount bodies, my “Holy Trinity” 24-70mm f/2.8 has been the least sharp Nikkor lens I’ve ever owned. Even with AF fine tuning, I’ve never been able to achieve super sharp images like I could with other pro lenses. Thus, your results appear to be in-line with my experience. I’ve done a lot of head-head comparisons with my D850 and my Z6 using more or less equivalent lenses for what’s available, such as the 35 or 50mm f/1.8 Z vs. the 35 or 50mm f/1.4G lenses on their respective bodies. Even with just a Z6, the Z lenses out perform the D850 with the F-mounts. To be sure, these primes are very close in performance, but the Z glass just seems slightly sharper regardless of f-stop, subject, light, etc. Really wish Nikon was more like Canon in terms of releasing the full set of Z mount lenses out of the gate. I look forward to your f/2.8 to f/4.0 head to head, and to the firmware update to improve the Z body focusing capability among other things.
I have a similar experience to yours, seeing results from my Z6 with the 24-70 f/4 and comparing old photos with my D800 24-120 f/4, and the Z6 outperforms the D800 despite it having less resolution. The reason being the 24-70 f/4 z glass is sharp at all focus distances and edge to edge, whereas the 24-120 f/4 VR was soft at the edges.
Hello from Spain!! Good video!! Did you consider using a DSLR like the D850 you have there with the 24-70 F mount? Would it change anything? Maybe the adapters don’t do a great job... thanks for your work! See you!
@@Dianxun Hou Yeah something is going on here, looks like back focus to me. The 24-70mm 2.8 E VR is a sharp lens. These results seem like they are off.
Nope I tried manual focus Focus peaking Auto focus pinpoint 3 different lenses I even got someone else to come and do it for me to make sure I wasn’t doing something really stupid. Every result was the same
Nice review Ricci and looking forward to the next comparison. It's interesting is some shots there is a subtle difference in colour between the two lenses with the F mount being a notch warmer. I find the same when comparing my F mount with the Z mount f4.
Thanks for doing this video. I'm finding that the 24-70mm Z-mount is just sharper than my F mount 24-70mm lens too. It's almost like shooting with a prime the new Z mount lens is crazy sharp.
I did notice the Z6 has the AF Tune feature, just wondering if it was used on the F-Mount lens. I picked up a Z6 kit recently along with the FTZ and 24-70 F4, the performance on photos I have taken has been really great. I was really surprised by how sharp the lens was across the frame at each setting I used. I plan on trying some of my other lens with it as I only had some manual focus lens with me, old Nikon 24, Voigtlander 58 and 40 and couldn’t get and focus confirmation on the 24 and 58. Only had it a couple of weeks so haven’t had much time to read the manual or use it much. So far I like this setup compared to my older gear. Thanks for the video!
As for selling my 24-70 and getting the 24-79 Z. Would you say it's worth the price difference? Also, do you have a video? Comparing the autofocus detection using the FTZ mount. VS using the Z mount? Is there any difference in performance?
Looking at the F at f/2.8 it looks like it was back-focusing, then at f/4.0 it looks like is focused a bit forward. At f/5.6 it seems that the F is back focusing again. Are you certain you got the focusing right? I am not sure this is a proper comparison. And yes, I do own an F-mount, but as you, I am trying to remain objective because I am moving to the Z mount.
Bear in mind these are all close focus tests. At infinity there's not a lot in it between these two lenses though the Z-mount still has a slight advantage. At close focus the Z mount lens wins quite decisively as you see here, mainly toward the long end of the range. This is different from the older 24-70G lens for the F-mount, which rather butchers the corners compared to the 24-70E at the wide end of the range but holds up better in the center toward close focus.
Thanks for this video Ricci. Very interesting! I have an old 70-200 (2003) and am wondering if that will give the same big differences when there will be a Z-mount 70-200. Looks like we all have to invest a lot of bucks into new glass for our hobby...
Hi, thanks for comparison. It’s 24-70 f2.8 Zmount so good even in Z6? I’m very interested to see sensor difference effect. Many thanks for you kind response.
This is a very interesting video; thank you. I wonder whether the results would be similar if the object being photographed was at, say, 20 feet and at infinity. (It is interesting to note that the calculated MTFs are quite similar for the two lenses, which may indicate that their performance at infinity would Lso be similar.) I look forward to your forthcoming videos.
How about performance at different distances? The 24-70VR F-mount is known to be better corrected for distance than close-up--something that I think took some upgraders from the 24-70G F-mount on the more photojournalistic end of things by surprise in an unpleasant way but probably pleased the landscape people. It would be helpful to know if, say, the Z-mount lens combines both the best in close-focus and distance performance.
Thanks Ricci. Excellent comparison and thanks for going the extra mile to check for lens variance. I'm really interested in how the f2.8 compares to the f4. Please don't make me buy the 2.8...lol
Great test, i would like to see compereson between z7 with 24-70/2.8 for z-sieres vs D850 with F 24-70/2.8... maybe there is really diference between “native” lenses for diferent systems what do you think? :)
It’s a good question however i kindda look at it like this... the only way you can use both of these lenses is if you have a Z6 or Z7. So for people that already have a Z6/7 I want to show them what the results would look like With the new Z 24-70 vs them using maybe their existing F - 24-70 with an FTZ adaptor. If I compare a Z7 + 24-70 Z vs D850 + F 24-70 It’s not really a Benefit for the D850 users cuz they cnt use the Z lens and it’s not really a benefit for the Z 6/7 users cuz they might not have a d850! I hope that makes sense But that being said I could make that video !! You know just for science !!
@@RicciTalks I get your point. I am happy for these comparison, there are very helpful. In particular your videos. Anyway I am interested in results (D850 + ... /Z7 + ...) for science as well. :) P.S. I can't wait for 70-200/2.8 comparison.
Interesting video, the Z range is a very very sharp lens. However, the new lens is well out of my price range at the moment so the Z24-70/4 will be staying with me for the foreseeable future. The question that many of us would like to know is just how good is our 24-70/4's compared to the 2.8 versions, I look forward to that comparison as I am very happy with the results from the Z7/24-70 combo and hope that the f4 gives the f2.8 a good test. Great stuff, look forward to the next video.
Very good comparison. Thanks for sharing! It is impressive with the quality of the new Z 24-70 f2,8 S, even exceeds the previous model for SLR cameras. I m looking forward to see your comparison between the Z 24-70 f4 s & Z 24-70 f2,8 s. I still can not edit the raws of the Nikon Z6 in Lightroom although I've updated it, maybe it's a silly question, but I may ask how you do it?
Would be interesting to do this comparison but have the F mount lens on the D850 instead. Or compare the F24-70 on D850 and Z7. Just to see if the Z7 with adapter decreases the quality. And also perhaps bring the older F24-70/2.8 without VR in the mix.
Question. Did you try the f mount lens on a dslr camera with around the same spec of the Nikon Z 7? Like let's say a Nikon D 850? Nikon Z 7 Nikkor Z 24-70 vs Nikon D 850 with Nikkor 24-70 vr.
The variable that's causing the problem is the fact that you're working in close focusing distances, where the 24-70 VR is very weak. A comparison at landscape subject distances (where the 24-70 VR is very strong) will yield a very different result.
Hello thanks for this review. Very very interresting. I Understand that you are probably a Pro-Nikon Lens... but did you try and see the same difference of quality with the last Sigma and Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 F mount with The adaptor? They are known to be very good (particularly the Tamron one I think). It could be also interresting.
Nice review for close focus distances. However for far focus distances (wich is my main priority), the maximum difference (above F5.6 wich is where i care) is 10% in favor of Z-mount sharpness advantage. Just got back from Thailand. 99% shots were at infinity (5 meter or further). The lens is VERY sharp. 24-70mm F2.8E VR. Where is matters for me, the Z mount is a bit dissapointing. I also don't like the new rubber focus/zoom ring. Old ones much more pleasant to use. Oh and another thing: The Sony GM 24-70mm at F5.6+ aperture, so far is just as good at the Z-mount on the better flickr images. Wich is sad cause the Z mount is supposed to be superior. I have nikon DSLR, love it will not part with it, but atm Sony/panasonic are more tempting mirrorless. I'll let people like the 24-70mm F2.8S 'early adoptors', pay the big price for mirrorless and i'll snatch in when it's cheaper. Ps for 3k euro i can get Sony A7RII+ Sony gm 24-70mm, nikon is at least 60% more expensive atm. Soon that price will be so for the A7RIII. Let's hope some ppl after all put Z-mount stuff on ebay. PS 24-70mm F4 is superior impressive (image quality), less so in build (understandable for weight). That is so far the most 'Z-mount proving' lens for me.
for some reason my 24-70 f mount on my z6 is shocking but on my d750 still sharp. I dont understand why. Its the work horse. Maybe there an apple style stuff going on wherenikon somehow make it crap on mitrrorless to snure you upgrade.
Many thanks, great video! Would also be great to see the difference not only in the center but also in the corners of each shot. So maybe you could add aditional subject (the same lens maybe which is good as test subj since it has a lot of repeated lines) closer to an edge of each frame
Apologies for my English.. I just found this channel recently. I definitly will suscribe to it. Love the comparison. I'm between d850 and Z7 to buy. And I got surprised by the difference between thos lenses. Can I ask you a question please? Or rather, could you answer my question please? the results would be the same if you mount the f lens in a D850 and the Z in the z mount? I want to know if the adapter makes any difference.
I knew it was going to be something like this -had to be, so I already sold my F-mount 24-70. For the moment I stick to the Z-mount f/4 version until you compare it with the Z f/2.8. Then it’ll be a question of bulk and weight... and whether I really want to go back to zooms again, when I had vowed to stick to primes...!
This is a great review, thanks for showing how much better the S Line lenses are from the F Mount equivalents. Would you be doing some comparison between S Line and Sony lenses? Or Canon?
Did you turn off the VR on the F 24 to 70 lens? If it was on and you were on a tripod it could’ve affected it. Or the combination of the lens and the body both having stabilization could have affected it.
What about f-mount on D850 vs z-mount on Z7? That would remove the FTZ and another interface from the mix. Similar sensors and worth the test if possible.
Very nice, thanks for the video! It seems to me there's a difference in focal lengths at 70 mm. The F-mount lens image looks a bit more zoomed-in. I'm sure it doesn't have an effect on sharpness, though.
Very nice informing vlog. Presented in a calm manner. Compliments. Maybe you should pay attention to the (place) microphone. Sometimes difficult to understand. Please go on with this kind of vlogs. 👍👍👍
FTZ adapter comes as a disadvantage for the F mount. Use the F lense with the D850 then compare to the Z7 24 70. The adapter just makes it uneven, but at the same time you will fall into comparing the camera performance as well, nonetheless I still think it is more a fair an accurate to leave the FTZ adapter out of the picture, because I would believe it is a disadvantage for the F mount.
I ave the older lens and the whole barrel is loose. the lens comes apart as I photograph. It needs to have the screws tightened. Today I bought the z 24-70 2.8. on the z8 Im excited If anybody knows a link to fix the old lens Id appreciate it
I think doing the test at ten feet or farther away, maybe even six or seven would mostly remove any significant difference between the two lenses. Most of the grousing about the F-mount 24-70 VR has involved close-up performance near the center of the image.
To be honest, unless you are making tens of thousands $$$ with your photos maybe it is necessary to change, otherwise stick with the f system they still perform great. I have D810 only 3 features I prefer for my camera full screen focus points, eye focus and tilt screen :)
Demm. the new Z mount blows the F mount one out of the water. As it should have been when the VR one debuted. Better late than never. Makes me wanna get the Z6.
You didn't try real world shooting distances though, the VR 24-70mm is well known for performing badly at close range and on test charts, etc. I would like to see a real world image of a landscape or something similar. I have the VR 24-70mm and have used the "S" 24-70mm f2.8 and although the S lens is better, in real world results and at f4-f8 it's way closer than these results!
The fact that you used 3 24-70's made me give you thumbs up for all the effort! Great review!
It looks like all Z lenses (these available) are better than their F mount counterparts. Well done Nikon!

Great work on the lens tests. Helps us buyers to make better purchase decisions.
See you!
I think you missed focus on the first comparison at 24mm 2.8 on the F mount. Looked like it hit just behind the D850 logo.
@@Dianxun Hou Yeah something is going on here, looks like back focus to me. The 24-70mm 2.8 E VR is a sharp lens. These results seem like they are off.
Nope
I tried
manual focus
Focus peaking
Auto focus pinpoint
3 different lenses
I even got someone else to come and do it for me to make sure I wasn’t doing something really stupid. Every result was the same
Nice review Ricci and looking forward to the next comparison. It's interesting is some shots there is a subtle difference in colour between the two lenses with the F mount being a notch warmer. I find the same when comparing my F mount with the Z mount f4.
Expensive but looks like a very good lens.
Thanks for the video. What about the autofocus between the two lenses and video quality? I much appreciate that comparison. Good vibes!
Thanks for doing this video. I'm finding that the 24-70mm Z-mount is just sharper than my F mount 24-70mm lens too. It's almost like shooting with a prime the new Z mount lens is crazy sharp.
Same camera so you must be using the adapter on the Z camera? Could the adapter be degrading the F lens any?
How is the sharpness in the corners?
Thank you so much for the comparisons. Wow... Quite a difference when viewed side by side.
Thank you for watching
Looking at the F at f/2.8 it looks like it was back-focusing, then at f/4.0 it looks like is focused a bit forward. At f/5.6 it seems that the F is back focusing again. Are you certain you got the focusing right? I am not sure this is a proper comparison. And yes, I do own an F-mount, but as you, I am trying to remain objective because I am moving to the Z mount.
How much can the F mount images be sharpened post-processing? Would it then equate to the Z mount images ?
Just saw this video. Thanks. I'm curious if you performed AF fine tuning on any of the f mount lenses?
(It is interesting to note that the calculated MTFs are quite similar for the two lenses, which may indicate that their performance at infinity would Lso be similar.)
I look forward to your forthcoming videos.
Ricci, love your videos, may F mount not as sharp due to the adapter ?
How about some shots focused at medium or long focus distance? Many lenses perform worse when focused closely.
Thanks Ricci. Excellent comparison and thanks for going the extra mile to check for lens variance. I'm really interested in how the f2.8 compares to the f4. Please don't make me buy the 2.8...lol
F2.8 vs F4 should be up in the next couple of days. I’m really interested in seeing the difference too ! Thanks for watching !
Nice review. Also, i'd like to see the sigma 70-200mm 2.8 sports VS the Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 in terms of image quality. Thanks for the video
I hope that makes sense
But that being said I could make that video !!
Nice Vid!
Any idea how a Third party 24-70 compares, like the G2 Tamron version? Very interested due to price.
Martin Norden I just got my f2.8 yesterday and my initial testing shows that it is slightly sharper than the f4. Not by a lot though.
@@reoflex Wow, that's impressive, good luck using it.
And also perhaps bring the older F24-70/2.8 without VR in the mix.
many are saying that the g version of the 24 70 is sharper then the VR version.

Question. Did you try the f mount lens on a dslr camera with around the same spec of the Nikon Z 7? Like let's say a Nikon D 850? Nikon Z 7 Nikkor Z 24-70 vs Nikon D 850 with Nikkor 24-70 vr.
Iv done that comparison in my other videos there’s no difference. The same lens on a Z7 and on a D850 is identical
The variable that's causing the problem is the fact that you're working in close focusing distances, where the 24-70 VR is very weak. A comparison at landscape subject distances (where the 24-70 VR is very strong) will yield a very different result.
@can't remember that has nothing to do with my point. The 24-70 VR is very weak wide open at close focusing range.
The shorter flange focal distance makes the lens design easier and also give a bit of extra light.
for some reason my 24-70 f mount on my z6 is shocking but on my d750 still sharp. I dont understand why. Its the work horse. Maybe there an apple style stuff going on wherenikon somehow make it crap on mitrrorless to snure you upgrade.
Many thanks, great video! Would also be great to see the difference not only in the center but also in the corners of each shot. So maybe you could add aditional subject (the same lens maybe which is good as test subj since it has a lot of repeated lines) closer to an edge of each frame
is the z mount lesne 70 mm shorter than 70 mm on f mount ? ?! and 24 mm on z lese longer than 24 f mount ?
Z mount is better because of their better resolving power ...
Lovely lens lineup 😍👍
Big problem with your test is that you compared the VR version of the F mount zoom which is not as sharp as the non VR version.
Did you focus at the same point?
Thanks for this great comparison!
Why is the S mount rear glass still small, while its mount is the new large one?
Excellent comparison!
I want to know if the adapter makes any difference.
the F mount looks like it's not perfectly focused in the same spot when you have the glow effect on contrasting sections
Ricci, what about calibrating the F lens. Still. Excellent comparison. Comforting to people switching, at least with that lens.
Although the af-fine tune is an option on the Z6 and Z 7 this lens did not need to be calibrated
Dilliboi Rubirosa what have u don since?
This is a great review, thanks for showing how much better the S Line lenses are from the F Mount equivalents. Would you be doing some comparison between S Line and Sony lenses? Or Canon?
Did you turn off the VR on the F 24 to 70 lens? If it was on and you were on a tripod it could’ve affected it. Or the combination of the lens and the body both having stabilization could have affected it.
Yes VR was off
the 24-70 2.8 F mount shapreness is the same when using a native F mount body? maybe the FTZ adapter casuing less sharp image?
Tried the d850 the results are the same the FTZ does not effect picture quality
What about f-mount on D850 vs z-mount on Z7? That would remove the FTZ and another interface from the mix. Similar sensors and worth the test if possible.
Literally doing this test right now and the results are exactly the same !. A few people asked so will make in to a video soon.
Nice review Ricci!
Could that be because the .nef files imported to Lightroom already have a correction applied to it ?
FTZ adapter comes as a disadvantage for the F mount. Use the F lense with the D850 then compare to the Z7 24 70. The adapter just makes it uneven, but at the same time you will fall into comparing the camera performance as well, nonetheless I still think it is more a fair an accurate to leave the FTZ adapter out of the picture, because I would believe it is a disadvantage for the F mount.
Iv done this test there is not difference at all... the FTZ does not change picture quality
Z f/4 vs Z f/2.8 next??
How come, the 'Agry One' call the S-lenses crap?
Would you get the Z mount 24-70 f.4 over the F mount 2.8 ?
I would yes
Signed on just to give this a like. Very good video although it stresses me out because now I just want that Z lens..
It’s interesting, the Z mount lens at 70mm is noticeably shorter than the F mount (ie magnification is lower/field of view is wider)
Nice review but will keep my old 24-70 ;-) Can make it sharper in LR
What if f mount lens from a fount camera & z mount lens from a z mount camera... equal distance. Same lighting and subject.?
To be honest, unless you are making tens of thousands $$$ with your photos maybe it is necessary to change, otherwise stick with the f system they still perform great. I have D810 only 3 features I prefer for my camera full screen focus points, eye focus and tilt screen :)
Do they sell ZTF converters? Put that Z mount on my DSLR lol.
This video made me buy the Z-mount immediately afterwards.
Demm. the new Z mount blows the F mount one out of the water.
