    Thank you so much Tony! This is exactly the review I was looking for. The new Nikkor lens is pricy but apparently based on your review and others, it's a huge leap forward. So glad I waited for this lens! Thumbs UP as always! Feeling better about my Z6 and Z7 - pulled the trigger on this one.

    I love my Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 and I just can't imagine life without it. My biggest problem with the mirrorless is the price... I can get the same shots on my Dslr at a cheaper price and when I am working it keeps production costs down. I can't see any advantage to going mirrorless other than weight.

    They "finally" released a 24-70mm f/2.8 for the Z mount? Weren't the Z6 and Z7 only released in late 2018? I don't know how long it took Sony or Canon to release their full frame 24-70mm f/2.8 mirrorless lenses, but I get the impression that Nikon had a fairly quick turnaround time compared to its competitors. Then again, I may be mistaken, but that is my impression as a Nikon and Sony mirrorless (and DSLR in Nikon's case) full frame (and APS-C in Sony's case) camera consumer.

      Not sure why, DSLR cameras are mirrorless if you shoot with the mirror up or in delayed mode.
      Mirrorless cameras negative has been the EVF and electronic shutter effect on the battery life. Design could be just like a DSLR but to make sales, give the ppl what they want, smaller lighter cameras.
      I'm loving the XPro3 but hate the ergonomics, would need to add a grip.

    • @v3Potato
      @v3Potato 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dct124 The battery life on my z6 far exceeds the rated 310 shots. Yes, it's a bit worse than my d750, but for the fact that the camera is constantly using power to show me my exposure before I take the shot vs just the mirror with a light meter...the z6 crushes it. Might be getting a z7 just to utilise all the great nikon glass in all its glory.

      @@dct124 I went to a camera store recently and tried every mirrorless camera they had...Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Fugi, etc...The Nikon Z cameras had the most amazing viewfinder out of all of them...almost as if I were looking through a DSLR.. So clear and crisp.

    • @dct124
      @dct124 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffpeterson5528 that's what I did. The Z 50 EVF is like looking through one of those old magnifying glasses editors used on contact sheets.
      I won't be getting a Mirrorless camera until they can get the batteries correct. I got a age 4 battery in my D3s and it still got more images than the Z 50 while shooting RAW and I mainly used the EVF for everything on the Z 50. I turned down all the setting like timers for playback, menus, review, etc. I completely turned off the LCD and never got over 400 RAW imgs on a single charge. Now jpg I got at least 900, RAW + jpg was about 350.
      I personally loved that Z 50. I like the X-T3 but I'd need a grip same for all the other brands except Canon, if there was a way to get rid of that weird plastic spoon feel I'd go with Canon since my partner uses Canon.

    • @dct124
      @dct124 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@v3Potato I never got over 400 shooting RAW + jpg or RAW only. The only time I did was when I was shooting jpg L, Optimal Quality, Fine. Those settings put me around 900 imgs.
      I'm most likey going to get a Z camera again mainly for the lenses. I'm just not sold on the Z6/Z7 or Z 50 (other reason) for my needs. I like my D3s, 4000 imgs, never had a cramp, no eye strain (I have 20/15 vision), no rolling shutter to worry about. That slight bit of lag from all EVF cameras is frustrating for me.

    I would like to have a simple control that has been available to some of us since ages ago: constant EV exposure control. It benefits "manual" exposure setting in available light. I could set exposure at an exposure value, say 1/125th with f/8 and rotate to 1/30th with f/16 or /500th with f/4 - each combination has the same exposure value as the other. I had hoped this could be assigned to the lens control ring or the F1/F2 buttons, read the flipping manual of Z7 and 24..70/2.8S, to ill effect. Did I miss this or should it be a feature request to Nikonsan?

      I’ve tried the sony amd the nikon. The difference in focusing is noticeable in favor of the sony. But I got a Z6 and I LOOOOOOVE IT! It can do what the sony can, and just a little bit more. Better video potential if you wish to get into that world. Stills ,for me, are a touch better with nikon (I know it’s more of a personal perception, differences are su subtle that it comes down to what you like more). Build quality, nikon. Menus are far more rational with nikon. Sony really need to reorganize their menu. If you are used to it, great. If not, you’ll be more confy with nikon in less time. Get any and you’ll be happy. Get the nikon and for sure you’re getting top product with planned firmware updates that will keep adding and improving focusing.

    Hey Tony. Nice comparisons! Though I shoot Fuji currently, I am seriously considering selling my Fuji gear and moving to FF, either the Nikon Z7 or the Sony a7Rlll. Question please...I understand that the Nikkkor S 24-70 f/4 is also considered quite sharp. Since I shoot landscapes and products at optimum apertures, I never shoot wide open, so don't require the faster 2.8 aperture. How does the Nikkor S 24-70 f/2.8 compare to the Nikkor S 24-70 f/4 at f/8 in terms of sharpness? Thanks!

    • @mrsusan893

I shoot landscapes with my X-T2, 10-24 f4, 16-55 f2.8, 50-140 f2.8 and rokinon 12mm f2 and now I'm looking at the Z6 with a few lenses as an option for the future. The 24-70 f2.8 is a lot more money but I'd like to use it for milky way photography but if the image quality is the same as the f4 version perhaps I'm better off getting that lens and maybe a fast wide angle prime instead.

Although the Canon is visibly sharper, without zooming so much the picture probably won't tell a huge difference. They're all just as sharp for anyone in any system I feel.

    People need to start buying more Nikon z cameras than Sony Mirrorless cameras. I was using the sony a6400 until a few months back and switched to a z50 recently. Honestly these z cameras and the Z mount lenses are simply too good for the price. Z50 may not have as many features as a6400 for video and stuff. But honestly you can always have such features by tweaking things around a bit and may be spending a few bucks on accessories. More people need to buy Nikon Camera. Why no comparison with the Canon RF 28-70 f2? I know it's 28 and not 24, and the comparison is between the 24-70 ones. But canon has a similar lens in their lineup and getting a bit of a mention and slight comparison would have been way better for informing your viewers

      @@DGBomber The Sigma or third party lenses will always be the better value for the same price. Unlike the first party, they cover many of the ecosystem in the market. Mass market usually means cheaper.
      The other reason why the 18-35 is one of its kind, because it's very hard to make fast zoom lens without making it impractical. If that 18-35 were meant for FF sensor, it will be larger. The 24-35 f2 for FF quite explains.
      With the mirrorless boom, perhaps Sigma could remake the 18-35 as a lighter lens, making it faster, or refine its AF; I had one sold it due to its reliability.

      Sorry Carol but the Tamron is not at all in the same class with significant softness outside the DX circle, significant roasting and flare, much greater lateral chromatic aberration and much less width in focal length. In fact, the Nikon S 24-70 f/4 is a much better performing lens.
