Amazing interpretation and amazing singer whether pianissimo or fortissimo, one of the best top notes I've ever heard by any opera singer, thank you for sharing it, Dear Herur22.
I had the great good fortune to be in the chorus when Gedda sang his final NY performance in this role. The opera begins with a parody of De Profundis, and we sang it from a restroom just off stage right at Carnegie Hall. To be mere feet away from this amazing singer was a thrill I will never forget.
There were so many roles that Nicolai Gedda simply dominated, and this was one of them. To my ear he was simply the best as Cellini, Faust, Hoffmann, des Grieux, Alfredo, the Italian Singer, Don Ottavio, Werther, Nadir, Almaviva, and Nemorino. He was also great as Lohengrin, the Duke of Mantua, Rodolfo and Cavaradossi. The sad thing is that there are no successors to his voice type or style. All the tenors today want to sound like Pavarotti. A worthy goal, but a myopic one.

Lucky you.

I agree with you 99%. I am crazy about his Cellini. Only Lohengrin bothers to my ear.
Μία ἀπὸ τὶς πιὸ ὀνειρεμένες μου ἄριες.
Ἔξοχος ὁ Νικολάι Γκέντα.
Εὐχαριστῶ.
Gedda at full throttle with total security. Exciting stuff!
I am glad that you like it, Barry.
Wow! I just love the way the turbo kicks in at 3:03 !
This production was the late John Dexter's operatic début.
