    This woman deadass said, and I quote: "soda is healthier than coffee anyway." Someone tell these Mormons that concentrated corn syrup in quantities of soda pumped with chemicals is infinitely worse for you than natural bean water with zero calories.

      @Wudup It could still be the caffeine. Not all soda has caffeine, but all coffee does. I stopped drinking Coke probably 4 years ago, but I still drink flavored water. No caffeine and minimal calories, but tastes similar. (I'm not LDS, just fat)

      Honestly, my wife is so sensitive to caffeine that she can have a couple sips of decaf coffee. Or maybe a quarter of a mt dew. So, coffee caffeine is stronger…to her. May be diff for someone else? Everyone has unique body chemistry.

The still very hypocritical answer I get most to the no caffeine no alcohol conundrum is; Mormons are not supposed to consume anything that is unhealthy for their bodies.I guess they don't know processed sugar and artificial flavorings are bad. • @sirdiesalot2975

      It comes down to interpretation of scripture. Mormons follow "The Word of Wisdom," supposedly a revelation from the prophet Joseph Smith which contains a lot of advice on how to live more healthily. It forbids the consumption of alcohol, tobacco, too much meat and hot drinks, the latter of which have been interpreted as tea and coffee in many circles.
      Since the Word was first released, Mormons have debated whether just a drink's temperature was the problem, or whether there were other factors, namely caffeine as it is in both tea and coffee: the two most problematic drinks. As a result, many Mormons believe that caffeine is an issue too, and stay away from any caffeinated drinks, from cold tea/coffee to sodas. Most don't however, as you saw in this video, and happily drink caffienated drinks like soda. Some even seem to believe that it's healthier for you, and the Church officially gave soda consumption a blessing in 2012.
      So tl;dr: caffeine isn't the big problem, the temperature of your drink is. But since tea and coffee (the two big hot drinks) have caffeine in them, some Mormons also think that caffeine is an issue too, if not the main issue.

    I've heard different things...does the LDS not allow caffeine, or hot drinks, or both? I know a devout Mormon at work that drinks Red Bull, saying he can because it isn't hot..but when I was at the Polynesian Culture Center in Hawaii (run by the BYU University there), all the Cokes were caffeine free...OK...I might understand the prohibition of caffeine...but hot drinks??? What about hot decaffeinated coffee or tea??? Why would a hot drink be prohibited???

    • @Digital-Wave
      @Digital-Wave 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The rule does not say anything about caffeine only hot drinks such as coffee and tea and alcohol; it also does not state why they can't drink alcohol, tea, and coffee. I would ask your co-worker why he can't drink coffee and tea. A theory I have heard is that it prevents them from socializing with other people who are not a part of the church.

All this time I thought it was about the caffeine, which I can understand - caffeine is mildly addictive, withdrawal headaches can be a pain, and caffeine crashes are a thing.
