Walt, good job on the rehafting of that axe. But just watch some of Buckins TH-cam vids for his doing it & you’ll be impressed. Especially when it comes to “what you did with the end that you cut off with the hacksaw” part. Leave it about 1/2 - 3/4 inch long next time. It’ll flare out to provide even MORE resistance to the head flying off. 😉

The crash damaged Stihl 026 had a sun damaged engine shroud on it. I wet sanded it with 600 and then 800 grit and sprayed it with several coats of clear coat and it looks pretty nice. I am going to replace it, so it matches the new air filter cover but it does look pretty good. I have updated it to the MS 260 air filter and will put the M S 260 Pro air filter cover. It already has a MS 260 rear handle and gas tank on it because I could not find an 026 rear handle at a decent price. I am putting an adjustable oil pump on it, too. I repainted it’s rusty 18 inch bar it came with in Stihl white but have a new Oregon Pro Lite on it right now.

Cheers for sharing more great content Walt. I always keep an eye out at vintage shows for old axes. The old heads have far better profiles for splitting compared to most new axes on offer (unless you start paying big money) plus the old ones tend to be heavier which is what i want in a splitting axe . I have been watching a certain Mr Billy Ray Smith for as long as I have been following your channel and there is a fair bit to pick up from his videos on re-hafting axes. I think you have been watching a few of his videos anyway so you are ahead of the game. If you can get them, round wedges are much better for axes and sledge hammers etc than the "regular" steel wedges. I have been using them since before i started using TH-cam to follow some of my interests. They definitely hold the heads in place.

I have seen those "barrel" wedges, but no local outlet for them. SO I was thinking of taking roll pins ( spring pins ) chamfer the inside diameter and see what they do. I've seen a few of Buckin vid's , a real positive message, but really haven't put lots of time into them. Too busy dealing with stuff around here. Axe's aren't something I've really bit into. Had to rehash my tools so that's the genesis of these.
