- Lake Hodges San Diego/Escondido, San Diego County, Southern California. Red Ironbark is a medium sized evergreen-leafed tree in the Myrtle Family (Myrtaceae), native to far eastern Australia, and is an abundant ornamental tree in coastal California.
I have loved eucalyptus since a teen. Now late 60's and living in Tucson. I see so many & have many in my garden. I need you on my neighborhood walks to ID some I just can't be sure of. I do know E. camaldulensis is very common here as are E. microtheca variations. I have E. torquata, Kruseana and many others. My biggest shock was E. citriodora doing well here in the desert! E. papuana is a favorite as well. Please do more of these! I love your IDing the mature trees! That helps me so much.
Thanks! I am surprised that many of those you see can survive in Tucson! Citriodora?!!? I figured that would be way too sensitive for the cold desert nights at over 2,000' elevation!
You are quite right to have a love affair with these species. This is one of the attractions of San Diego.
Maybe, I was an Aussie in a previous life! LOL I have been fascinated with Eucalyptus since childhood after my mother introduced me to them, and their fragrant leaves!
Keep doing what you are doing. I am betting that there a lot of San Diegans who feel the way you do. @@brianpowell5082
