My very first show was on Bruce's 26th Birthday in Ann Arbor, MI. After the show, when at least 3500 people had left the building, the band came back on stage and did the first-ever DETROIT MEDLEY, reportedly per Max's request. It included Quarter to 3. It was awesome.
Having just seen this extraordinary performer I would have to agree with no disrespect to Prince, James Brown, and any other performer(s) that give it their all night after night.
i've seen James brown I've seen prince the granted I did not see James Brown on the Tami show in 1964. I did not seen James Brown as prime, but I will say this Bruce Springsteen is the baby of James Brown and Bob Dylan and I have never ever seen anybody in their prime better than bruce. I know art is subjective music is subjective but probably 75 to 85 bruce was I would also include 1988 bruce was in his prime and the 8081 tour on the river was fucking stupendous. There is no one to the kid touchdown. The energy was just ridiculous.
I saw him one week later in Rochester- best concert of my life! #2 was the Clash in 1981 at NYC's Bonds Casino (was there the night the cops and fire department shut down the show and again 2 weeks later).
This video plays real good on TV, I have had the good fortune of seeing this in 1991. This video introduced me to Pre Born in the U.S.A Bruce, who back in 1991 had been broken up with the E street band for almost 3 years. I would go see him my first 3 times in 1992 but no e street till 99. Then my Bruce collection was Born in the USA and the Live 75-85 album. I went out later that night and bought the rest of the albums and have not stopped listening to them since. Thanks for posting it.
How can this have less than a 5-star ave rating? But then how can there be over 30,000 views and only 100 ratings? This is one of the best videos of music ever. You Can Trust Your Eyes, Ears, Feet & Heart To The Man Who Wears All The Stars.
On this day in 1975 {September 23rd} Bruce performed the 'Detroit Medley' for the first time; of course it was in Michigan, at the Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor... It was also his 26th birthday, which means the Boss is 64 years old as of today... Happy Birthday!!!
the best performer ever! no one does it like the boss! no one! a classic bootleg vid that does the man and the band justice and there's only 5 comments so far including mine. I guess it has to do with poor sound quality but what can you expect when there was only 1 silly little microphone capturing the whole event.
Maybe the best clip on all of TH-cam-thanks for postin this. And those tickets were only $12.50 a pop in 1980. Amazing that this was the last song of that almost 4 hour show in DC...
Fantastic! Before super stardom, before Born in the USA, before he fancied himself a modern day Woody Guthrie... Just pure 100% unadulterated good time rock 'n roll.
I'm not sure you should insult Sprinsteen by saying he sucks. He actually doesn't :-). The audio on this one is perhaps not the best there is but I can assure you Bruce is the Boss. if you are a fan of classical music I wouldn't post these negative comments on a rockmonument and legend. you shoud stick with your music. I don't go to dance tracs on youtube to say they suck. Its just not my kind of music.
It's sort of like three to four hours of being at a big sports event in which you really, really care about the outcome, and your team wins on a miracle play in the last 30 seconds, over, and over, and over and over, for the entire concert. Oh, and you're simultaneously you're having the best sex you've ever had, too. I'd say, "toss in a pinch of pure cocaine, or whatever your drug of choice," except a Bruce Springsteen concert is better than any drug. You leave with a natural high.
i suggest you look up "Springsteen - R&R medley" . It's the same music as this music but with better audio. Perhaps that will change your opinion? You should also remember he is performing in front of a couple of thousand people. If it sounds like noise... its probably the crowd cheering for more.
"...Jenny Jenny! WOO! Jenny Jenny!" [Can your papa call?] "...No sense in livin/ no sense in dyin/ I'm a lonseome train/ on a lonesome track... WOO WOO! ALL ABOARD! WOO WOO!..." - Get your blue dress on you red devils and you'll be spinnin like a spinnin top to this monster track.
is there a video on youtube of bruce playing detroit medley at the joe or somewhere else in motown? if anyone could attack a link it'd be much appreciated seeing bruce this friday at the palace, hell f'n yes :)
actually i'm not that ignorant. I love classical music. It is the ultimate form of music, but it doesnt mean i like it the most. I think you are a bit ignorant. Everybody has his own defenition of great music. If rock isn't your thing, then you should not say he sucks. In rock and roll he is one of the best and currently the best in my eyes. By saying he sucks just proves your ignorance. (sorry for the mistakes in my english)
The world deserve that explosive good energy....he and the estreeters should be forever young❤

Ladies and gentleman...the greatest live performer the world has ever seen

Best Detroit Medley Man ever!

Yes. the greatest performer that ever lived!!!!!! and the E street band too!!!!

stunning, touching, really unbelievable!! those guys move me to tears!

To quote Joe Grushecky... "That's why He's the Boss!" Saw Bruce do this a couple months later in Greensboro, 2-28-81 and they blew the roof off!!!
On this day in 1975 {September 23rd} Bruce performed the 'Detroit Medley' for the first time; of course it was in Michigan, at the Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor...
It was also his 26th birthday, which means the Boss is 64 years old as of today...
Happy Birthday!!!
this video ROCKS! bruce is one of the greatest!
best tour by any artist ever
Those old Detroit songs are what makes bruce so great. He grew up with the Motor City Music like most of us did. Motown - english invasion etc.
I didn't discover Bruce Springsteen until the early 90's...I was missing out big time...Better late than never I guess!!

Cant' get enough of this magic harmony
killer clip. thanks for sharing.
all aboard out here in la, joe
Remember that this is at about the 3 hour point of the show (or more) and the crowd is exhausted.
Great video, I never heard this version with Loneseome Train. Thanks!!

You can’t be serious. Bruce was already « a modern woody Guthrie ». Listen to factory, racing in the streets etc.
No wonder why they called him the boss, awesome, the best
Okay, make any old joke you want, but I was at this concert.

Este tío da la vida.
Awesome video.
he is listed in the Rock and Roll hall of fame... its deffinitly rock. But indeed the line between rock and Pop is now different than 20 years back
SPRINGSTEEN - The Essence of ROCK!!!!!!!!
Where to get his bootleg? It's not Lonesome Day to Maryland or the XP version.
long live the boss...
My partner, my friend...
this is what it's all about, kiddies...
No-one even approaches Springsteen as a live performer
Awesome version! Saw this live circa 80-81. Paid $13.50 face for lower tier!
Es una canción puro rock and roll /Es unacanción puro rock and roll
cool. last night in Germany!
The again, there were so many variations. All good!!

are you FROM Nevada? (I asked because I moved from Mass to Oregon in 2007 and have been surprised that there aren't more Springsteen fans out here.
I thought he did it kinda slow at Hammersmith, but both are good versions in my mind.
@ taocpa - No joke at all. When I tell people I was at the Winterland shows in 1978 they don't believe me. Oh well.
Won't, or can't?
What are the l, i, second l, and y in your ID for? The other three letters are obvious.
I'm with Mitch on that, it's slow. Rock N' Roll ain't slow at all.

Still rather hear Mitch Ryder doing them
Mitch and the wheels still do it better, thats the reality .
Agree with Maybunny Ryan - it'd be easier to explain what sex is like to a virgin....
*cough* It's all about passaic *cough*
Je
Je l l'adore love you
he did it way better at hammersmith
TOO slow at Hammersmith!!!!
