why skulls?
They belong to men who reposed in Christ as monks in the Orthodox Church. Living monks care for the bones of their brothers who have left this world in hope of eternal life. God bless
Additionally, monks always keep in mind their own end. The skulls are a reminder of death. Catacombs are closely tied with Christianity, too. The early saints used to hold services there, often at the graves of martyrs. All Orthodox churches use relics, which are sometimes fragments of bone, in Divine Liturgy as a remembrance of this. Each church must have an antimension, which is a piece of cloth bearing a Bishop's signature with a relic sewn into it, on the altar. That is the bare minimum for serving Divine Liturgy. Many altars also have a relic embedded into them.

The souls of these holy martyrs who once inhabited these skulls are not dead. They are very much alive, living now beneath the Throne of God. They constantly cry out to God who wants all people to be saved. May the Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us and save us.

As Orthodox Christians we are called to remember our own deaths. The Early Church held services in the catacombs or Rome, often besides the bodies of martyrs. All of our churches have relics in them. Often these relics are fragments of bone.
