Wow, good video Yael thanks for making it and showing us how to do front side and backside kick turns. I started kick turning back in 1975 - 1980 but since returning to riding in 2020 I've seemed to of lost a lot of muscle memory. Today its coming back and I'm relearning the kick turn when skating vert and steep banks. The kick turn is also the basis for tricks such as space walk, end-overs and spinning 360's as well as a few others. Most importantly the kick turn comes into play when doing a sharp carve is not possible or quick enough. Doing a kick turn will help change direction very quickly. Thank you for making your videos, I really enjoy your instruction and point of view especially since you're an ocean surfer and surf skating is all about emulating the brave surfers we have on this great planet. Stay stoked and keep rippin' it up!!
Thanks @jay the surfer for the kind comment. Always like and appreciate to hear from you! Keep practicing, it will all come back - and I'm here if you need any assist. - Yael
@@ALLaBOARDvideos thanks so much Yael. Just wanted to apologize for calling you Sophie in a couple of my comments. @@bynia83 I admit that I'm a bit behind after a tough winter - this is all coming this summer. First- snaps, more bottom turns, and later in summer how to drop. stay tuned
Hi, great video’s. Thanks for sharing. You instruct to keep looking at the “wave” on a frontside kickturn until the turn is complete. Can you explain that a more? I was always thought to look where you’re going. Or is this only for carving? Thanks so much!! 🤟🏼
It's true that you look where you're going. But sometimes for the maneuver itself you want to look at the place you perform it, ie the wave in this case. Part of keeping your head back to the wave in this case is helping with the counter rotation- that's what's creating the snap; one side of the board is stopping while the other (the tail) is continuing. So your upper body is throwing your energy up, decompressing as you're leaning on your heel edge, and the board starts to turn. The head remains to help with the counter rotation. In addition, if you turn the head, you will not only get a small drift movement, but also you are more likely to fall over. Since all the energy of the board is turning, if you don't counter it you'll have too much of your body wait turning with it and you'll fall over. Think of the head as somewhat of a stabilizer in this case. in the backside, your back arm is the one doing that work by pulling back, while the front arm pointing to where you'll go next. Makes sense?
Great video, is a snap just an aggressive version of these kick turns? I see some tutorials about breaking traction on the rear and pivot on the front trucks but surely thats not the correct 'surf' way?
That’s a very good questions and you are correct. I consider the kickturn and first step before learning snaps. So if I want to practice snap in a place that’s a bit steeper than I’m used to I might start with Kickturn as a first step. Now, I’ve promised and failed to deliver, but I WILL have a video on snaps coming out very soon where I will break the movement in every way possible. For now, you are correct- in a snap you may be breaking traction but you definitely do NOT pivot on the front. In fact, in a true snap, sometimes the front trucks are actually above ground and don’t even touch the surface and I will show in my video. Does that make sense?
@@ALLaBOARDvideos yes, most definitely. Iv seen videos of both ways. I'm not a surfer tbh, sea near me is always wind based sports but I have in my mind that I want to learn the proper surf methods. Better get down to my skate park and practice those kick turns then. Thanks for the quick reply, iv watched quick alot of your videos already. There very useful 🤙
Hello Friend, thank you for the videos, really enjoy the detail and explanations. I notice you're riding the swell tech JOB 34inch, I hear many people complaining about the 7.5inch tail, however the board size seems ideal with that WB, then new hybrid has 8.5 tails but extra 2inch on board length (36inch), I'm about 5,9 and 70kgs, what's your thoughts ? sorry for odd platform to ask, but was curious on your thoughts considering your experience.
Hello! First, thanks for watching. No problem with the platform- it's perfect to start a discussion and maybe others can join. I'm not sure what the complaints are about? I saw zero issue with the tail width, did they say it's too narrow? because as you said yourself, it also seems just right to me with that WB. For the sake of example, I'm very small- 5'3 and 50kgs. I know other riders just find the board strange after riding Carver. It's very different, no questions there, and does get some getting used to. For me personally Carvers are much harder to maneuver. I don't see the benefit of a larger tail in this case. And if i missed out on what you mean, please feel free to correct me. Yes, the hybrids are bigger - imo it depends what you're surfing. if your on a short board, then the smaller, more snappy swelltech would be better. if you surf mid size and longs then hybrids might feel better. For me, and my size, this board is plenty to handle :) Let me know if I answered your question. I will admit I have not tried so many other boards... love my swelltech
