As someone else said- finally a proper look at the frequency response! Every pedal demo needs to have that in it because we all use different guitars, pickups, amps etc. and listen to these videos on phones, iPads, whatever…and the only thing that makes sense in a pedal demo is that frequency response as it tells you how it will fit with your own rig. More of it mate.👍
Very good video. Would love to see these two compared with the Wampler Triumph on Punch mode as that’s supposed to be based on a SD-1. And with the 3 band eq you could probably get it to sound the same as both the SD-1 and the OD-2.
Thanks for Spectrum view/comparaison. I do it my self with my pedals and found new ways of using them that way. As for example, a ts-9 becomes more flat eq at low settings of the tone control. Also found the i can hear 1dB changes. The ears are pretty sensible to level difference over frequency.
The SD- 1 has the same topography as a Tube Screamer. The ts was a bigger sellar that's why Boss made the SD-1. The clipping diodes on the ts create symmetrical distortion. The SD-1 has (tube like) asymmetrical distortion. They wanted to use asymmetrical distortion on the ts but Boss had a patent on it. Both were popular for what is now to many a bad thing. They have a poke around 1k. That poke gives the guitar a lot of definition in a band context.
The SD-1 is an OD-1 with the addition of a tone knob, and the OD-1 came out in 1977, while the Tube Screamer didn’t come out until 1979. So, yeah, the SD-1 may have been a response to the Tube Screamer, with its tone control, but the OD-1 was first with this basic topology. I know, that’s got nothing to do with anything, but your comment made it sound a bit like the Tube Screamer was the first overdrive of this type and Boss entered the market after to compete with it.
Hello!! Have you tried combining these two pedals? (SD1 as a boost) Do you think it's a good idea? Or maybe it's better to use another pedal with the SD1 (OD3, blues driver ..) Thanks 🙏🏾
In the spectrum they seem 98/ identical aside the volume gap of the od2... But listening to them they actually sound quite differently; the od2 has a more pleasant type of saturation and fullness.
@@DomeNightbearer imo the gain structure is much more important...then you can always adjust freqs and compensate with a humble Boss eq after that given pedal.
Great video, especially because you show the frequency response! Which software do you use if i may ask? Thanks and keep it up! Greetings from Luxemburg! Laurent.
I love your channel and your analysis....But one small thing. You kept calling the Turbo Overdrive a Tube Overdrive. I know it sounds tube like. But I suspect the 12 volt operation makes it a "Turbo".....also is there any difference between the Super Overdrive and the new, 40th Anniversary SuperOverdrive?
@@DomeNightbearer No worries. Your English is far better than my German. Alles Gut. "Turbo Tube Overdrive" would be a great name for a pedal. Or maybe the DomeDriver? The 40th Anniversary is Black and Gold and looks beautiful.I might have to get just for the looks. Is that silly? Prost und Cheers!
@@DomeNightbearer Bwhahaha....Like my Behringer Heavy Metal pedal....Pink? In a Mosh Pit? That just shows how confident you are ....haha.....and how tough you are...YES!! the "DOME DRIVE"...With umlaut's over the O and the Koln, Dome painted on the pedal. I would buy 2 of them. Prost!!!
Hey mate, what would be the ideal chain for a HM-2, tube screamer and a boss noise suppressor? I have these 3 pedals and a preamp. Please help your HM-2 brother. Greeting from Canada!
@@DomeNightbearer It worked, but it was too noisy, the NS tamed the HM2, but TS was making noise. Great sound tho! I put the TS in the beginning of the chain for less noise for now.
I woul like this kind of comparison also on boss chorus, the ce-5 and ch1 had some differenti versione i have a ce-5 blue label from 1991 and a Pink from 2000' both analog but since 2001 the circuitry was converted Digital. The ch1 has a tilt eq and ce-5 has a concentric knob for low and hi cut. Both use the same bbd chip and bbd clock. Ce2 and 3 are similari but With ore fixed eq. Probabily the most digerent Is the storic and pricy ce1. Maybe between analog and Digital the sectrum Is changed more than some one could Guess.
I like the yellow one.
I think the yellow one sounds terrible. The yellow one clearly is superior
The yellow one is a bit better but both are still good.
FINALLY! Someone providing a frequency spectrum!! Thank you, Sir.
You're welcome!
this channel is basically a go to when it comes to in depth analysis and its not convulided keep up the awesome work good sir
Thank you so much!
Your demo reviews are very informative and more scientifically based then most reviews.

I had a turbo overdrive, it was okay but I didn't know about the 12 volts thing until a few months ago. might have to find another one.
1:34 So *this* is why the red light on my Turbo overdrive is so weak when plugging in a 9v adaptor!?
AWSOME, MAN !! Nice informative video.
que pedal boss es mejor para sonar como slash?

yep. The EQ curves are a nice visualisation, but they don't show everything!

whoopsie... that was not intentional 😅
I haven't tried the 40th anniversary so I'm not sure.

NS-2 (HM-2 in the loop) > Tubescreamer > preamp.
It's by far my favorite chain, however some prefer the tubescreamer before the hm2
@@DomeNightbearer Thank you man, I'll let you know in the morning how it goes. Answer much appreciated! Cheers!

The od-2 had that 80s trash metal sound more full and cut thru, the od1 more of a classic drive
Turbo over Super
both are useless unless in front if a tube amp. 😊
the super od is in front of many famous pro rigs. i think Nervana stepped on a turbo.
You can't beat turbo overdrive
Ridiculous, don't need a frequency spectrum ! just use your ears !
True! But it's fun AND you kinda understand what you like. Hard to tell just by ear that you like f.e. an 1.4k Boost, at least for me 😅
It's really nice for the way I think for my eyes to see a picture of what my ears see.
What exactly is your problem?
Why have you got a bee in your bonnet over this? Seems a very odd thing to be getting arsey over.
