- I'm really excited to share this little "No Mic" Rig I've put together using Sonicakes Sonic IR Impulse Response Loader paired with their ABY Switcher!
Its super simple and allows you to have perfect direct signal to the Front of House Sound Engineer without having to place a clunky Mic Stand in front of your Amp!
This method will work with any amp equipped with an FX loop!
If you have questions, Drop em in the Comment Section and I'll Answer Them!
Thanks for Watching!

This is awesome indeed!
Thanks! Hopefully it will inspire some folks to experiment with their rigs a bit!
The sound is direct and clean!! Its awesome!

@@MadManMusic and what about notorious power amp tubes "mojo"? Do you loose it? Or you made IR through your amp and it contains this coloration? Or your IR is neutral and you don't care? =)
Thats a great question!
Generally the only coloration the Power amp (with 6l6 tubes) is exaggerated extreme highs and lows. Its a good rule of thumb not to abuse those frequencies anyway.
My amp settings are set around the middle position across the EQ. So its nearly as natural as it can sound.
I made the IR to have the characteristics of what I look for when Recording or Mixing. Live scenarios aren’t much different through the Front of House PA System. So my tone cuts through while staying BEEFY! 💪🏼
But yeah. You only here that “tube mojo” through the speakers themselves and they is retained using this method!
🤘🏼😜
Wow man, I remember ProPain from way back in the day (maybe even 90s?). I have this ir loader and love it. Also, great playing. Solid AF.
💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Super informative video! Today i'm happy that i can use a cheap IR Loader pedal (Cuvave Cube baby) to have a professional sound in my home studio, but i was asking myself how to do what you have shown on the video :) Thank you very much
💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
That’s really simple. Thanks for the tip🤟🏻
You got it! 🤘🏼😜
Sweet info man, I'm thinking about doing the same type of thing for my bass rig. I like to keep things clean and simple.
🤘🏼PRO PAIN FKN RULES 🤘🏼
Let us know how your set up works out! 🤘🏼😜
Hi ! Very interesting, and nice playing, awesome band ! I have a question, can I do this with an amp that has no effect loop ? (Vintage fender or Marshall head) thanks a lot !
Great demo man, that was awesome 😀🤘🎵🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks! 🤘🏼😜
Just mow discovering the sonic IR and landed on your channel. Just wondering how or where in the chain could this pedal be applied with IEM system using the Behringer air xr18.
I use a more simple approach. Guitar to Amp Input then Effects Send to IR loader to FOH. No need to run it through the Effects Return since it will still pass signal to the power section
It’ll work that way also!
🤘🏼😜
@@MadManMusic IRs are the way of the future, I think more people should be doing it, as it makes not just the musician happy, it makes the sound guy happy too
Totally!

@@kennhern The simpler, the better (for me). Question - if you wanted to use time based fx like delay & reverb after the preamp , and have them audible in both the IR/D.I. and the power section (fx return) of a combo amp on stage, is the method shown in the video the best method?
Hi interesting idea, So coming out of your fxloop then split signal, one back into fxreturn the other Foh-Pa. So the signal coming from the splitter back to the return hasn't got the IR loader sound going back into your amp. But being you have loaded the IR with your sound it sounds the same Foh and what's coming out your amp right. Which is great for you as it gets rid of the hassle of mikeing up the amp. So can your for example run the IR in the fxloop with the amp set to clean sound then the IR will play your Propain sound out of your amp, then run for out of IR to foh to get the same sound? So if I'm in the crowd listening to you the sound coming out of your Amp is the the same as what's coming out the PA?As you can probably guess I'm new to IR'S etc been playing for years ,Guitar, pedal, Amp guy. Haha great sound by the way 🤘
I responded to your second comment.
Thanks for watching!
🤘🏼😜
The Sonicake IR draws 70mA when operating, I just measured it. Any 100mA 9V DC output from a power brick will be perfect.
💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
So I can just plug it into my PC, drag and drop IR files into its storage and have whatever IR I want on it?
Yep! 👍🏼
There is a feature on Sonicakes website to “convert” the IR for the Pedal. There is a link in the videos description. Once the files is ready just load it in by dragging and dropping just like a Thumb Drive!
🤘🏼😜
Hello matt. Thanks for the super informative video. I just wanna ask.. the setup from head amp to aby >> sonicake IR >> FOH. If its ok with that routing and not damage to the tube amp?? Again thanks for the info. You are great live performance guitarist 👍hail pro pain
Hey Thanks for the compliment!
I used an ABY in this video to split the signal. It really doesn’t effect anything because the signal going through it is un-touched so to speak.
You DEFINITELY dont want to run the output of the Sonic IR into your power section.
Also, it was brought to my attention that I could just use the “Pre-Amp” (or Slave) Output and X the ABY all together. Which is a much smarter way to do this.
So if your amp has a Pre-Amp Only Output. Use that directly into the Sonic IR -> FOH.
I hope that helps!
🤘🏼😜
Hey, why not use the preamp out with the IR sonic? That way you dont need the aby switch right?
Someone had mentioned that to me some time ago and I was like 🤦🏻♂️ "why didn't I think of that..."
But yes, thats the way moving forward!
🤘🏼😜
😄🤟🏻
Probably this is the best video about the Sonicake IR - so huge thanks for that (your video made me get this pedal).
I've seen it among the comments that you don't recommend using both outputs at the same time (the jack and the XLR one - without an ABY splitter) when using an amp head, but what's the deal if I want to use it with a power amp? (like the Harley Benton GPA-100). I guess it should work and sound ok in such case.
Edit: I was thinking about it, and yup - the ABY is needed anyway (meaning your vid makes total sense now).
1st out: amp sim or amp head › ABY pedal (A) › IR › XLR › mixer & PA
2nd out: amp sim or amp head › ABY pedal (B) › power amp › cabinet
So you just wanted to avoid using a cab sim when going out to an actual cab (2nd out).
It sounds like you’ve got it!
My particular amp actually has a “Preamp Out” which actually nullifies the need for the ABY. You can run your FX Loop pedals as normal and then just out of the Preamp out or “Slave” out into the Sonic IR. This works great.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Thanks for watching!
🤘🏼😜
can you connect a bunch of pedals and an amp switcher like a boss es 5 on top of all that stuff in the effects loop?
Yes, if you know where certain types of pedals belong in a signal chain.
It all depends on your setup.
🤘🏼😜
ohh so it does not work in between the cab and the poweramp right ? I am looking for a cheap solution that does that, so far i only found the AMT pangaea, other solutions are too expensive for the thing i want to do with it
No, do not run amplified signal into. It would go before your power section.
🤘🏼😜
Me again why ask is , Can you use the IR in the fx loop then have 11 different sounds at the turn of the knob to get say, if doing covers to get different Band sounds etc still go to Foh out of xlr? Saves having a pedal board with 10 different pedals to Vary your sound ? Cheers 🤘
Hey!
So the idea of the splitter is that the signal going to FOH has the IR and the signal going back into your FX Loop Return doesn’t, its dry just as it should be.
You do not want an IR on your signal going into your FX Return then out through a real speaker. It would sound bad.
But for changing cab sounds to FOH on the fly you could do that.. but be sure to let them know beforehand because you’ll drive them crazy. 😅
🤘🏼😜
@@MadManMusic thanks for the reply yeah i see what you mean, I guess it's a matter of playing round with it . I already have a passive splitter and managed to snag a used Sonic IR off Ebay. Cheers Merry Christmas. 🤘
Hi! I am waiting to my sonicake ir...what about in use the two outputs at the same time to a pair of monitors studio or one output to the interface and the other to the return of the amp.I Will play with a amp tubes with efects loop. Thanks!
Hi great question.
DO NOT Run it back into your amp. Thats why I used a ABY Splitter in the Video. You do not want to send Processed signal back into your RX Return that Emulating s Speaker Cabinet before it hits the Power Amp and then out of a Real Speaker Cabinet... It won't cause harm but it won't sound good.
I do believe that both outputs work at the same time so you could Route your signal to different things like a DI Box for Front of House Sound and also to a Audio Interface to record your Live Set.
These things would work.
I hope that helps! Enjoy the Sonic IR!
🤘🏼😜
@@MadManMusic I have watched the video again and now it is clear to me, your comment will be of great help to me nonetheless. I have already bought the pedal and it will arrive in about 2 weeks and I will try it as soon as I can, very grateful and thanks again!
You’re welcome! If you have more questions feel free to ask! 🤘🏼😜
@@MadManMusic Hi! i have the pedal and great! I play It with my peavey 6505 mh and with the 2 output to monitors and perfect..the best cab simulation the number 4 Marshall 212...but are there any external ir recomendable? Thanks a lot
@@MadManMusic I really liked the pedal a lot and was pleasantly surprised... The only point against it is that when sending to monitors from the loop neither the resonance nor the reverb of the peavey works for me. Perhaps with an amplifier that has a preamp output it doesn't exist this problem
If its good for you... Def good enough for me!
💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
First off, sweet riffs!
If I wanted to do this setup, but I don't have an IR for my exact cab, how would it work? If I used a good IR that I like, my stage volume wouldn't match what goes out into the FOH, right? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! (I use an evh 5150 iii 6l6 50 watt, and a 212 cab with a v30 and a g12h 100)
Hey dude!
You can use any IR you’d like! It needs to be 44.1kh and I believe 24bit which most IR’s will have included.
I use my “Nasty Cab” IR. (Available in the Merch Shop of course)
But all you need to do is change the name to 01_*name of IR*
Its easy check the Card thats included.
As far as Single Volume to FOH its been strong enough that I havent had any issues in 20 shows so far on tour. And Im using it every night.
FOH can bump you up to whatever volume they need. So set your stage volume to a comfortable volume and let them do the rest. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
🤘🏼😜
@@MadManMusic thank you!
💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Just replying here so that anyone who reads this will know what's up.
The pedal has a volume control so you can adjust the loudness of the pedal going to FOH. And even then FOH has preamps in their mix desk to bump you even louder so you're good on that front.
Even if your IR is of a different cab, FOH will be projecting that sound to your audience but if you still have an amp/cab on stage, the volume of your cab will probably be minimal and will prob be used for stage monitoring (hearing yourself on stage).
Facts. 🤘🏼😜
How does feedback behave with this ? I’m a noise guy but I’m not sure if it works with this
If you're still using an actual Speaker Cabinet at a loud Volume along side the Sonic IR on Stage you will Definitely still Feed Back!
This just allows you to have more control over your Tone going to Front of House.
🤘🏼😜
Wouldn't that be only grabbing your preamp signal and no power amp since it's in the effects loop?
Yup and thats what you want.
If you run the power section into the pedal you’ll blow it up.
Many amps have a “Preamp Out” or “Slave Out” these outputs are ideal as well for use with an IR Loader. 💪🏼
🤘🏼😜
@@MadManMusic that makes sense since it's not a load box.
The question I have is. if you are say switching from a distortion to a clean effect would that clean come though the IR since its getting a different signal? So like your cab would be playing the clean/effect but then the Direct IR is still doing your distortion? If say it does how would you be able to work around that?
This is a great question.
The IR is basically last in its own signal chain. So the Distortion or Clean (which is just less distortion) would come from the amp you’re using.
The IR just simulates a Speaker Cabinet, and I would recommend sticking to just one that you like instead of switching them when you change from Clean to Distorted.
I hope that makes sense, let me know if you need more info!
🤘🏼😜
I WAS LOOKING FOR SONIC IN REAL LIFE
Like… the Hedgehog? 🙈
🤘🏼😜
Yep 🤣
Hello, looking into this to use with my boss katana for recording, does it have to be in the fx loopz or could I put this on my line out going into my interface?
Great Question!
If can be placed at the End of your Signal Chain as long as you’re using some sort of “Preamp” in front of it that doesn’t have an Impulse Response or Cabinet Simulator..
So in the case of the Boss Katana it may not work in front of the amp if you’re using the Amp Models on the Amp itself. Then it would *need* to be in the FX Loop with all of the Katana’s Cab Sim Options *disabled*.
I hope this is making sense. It can be a fairly complicated process to find the best way to use something like this.
Let me know!
🤘🏼😜
the line out of the boss katana has an option to shut off the internal cab sim so it should work. Thanks 🤘
There you go! That should work perfectly!
Let us know how it goes!
🤘🏼😜
So, does your ir have power amp modelling baked into it? Otherwise it wouldn't be the same tone as what's coming out of the cab, would it?
I’m getting this question a bit lately.
The thing is Impulse Responses can only be made with a (fairly) flat response power amp. So yeah, it does have the characteristics of the sound going through a power amp. But there isnt power amp “modeling” happening.. per se.
The sound is exactly like what it sounds like when my speaker cabinet is mic’d. Exactly. Its great!
🤘🏼😜
Is TRS cable avaliable for input?
Only the output.
🤘🏼😜
is this your big F you to Kemper and Quad Cortex?
My big F-You?? No.. these are just affordable ways to get similar results. Not everyone needs these over spec’d, expensive processors…
…and ironically, I’m literally walking out the door to buy a Kemper Power Rack right now.. 😅
But no, Im not against any kind of gear, I just like showing people that you can do a lot with a little.
🤘🏼😜
@@MadManMusic hilarious!

Whats it missing? 🤘🏼😜
