  • I try several methods of cleaning the keys on my Steinway upright piano, made in 1917, to find the most effective method for cleaning ivory piano keys.

Excuse me people, but why is there any discussion around whether to use dead elephant carcasses to enhance our musical experience slightly? Sickening. All ivory should be replaced/destroyed.

Here's how I look at it: murdering a 100-year-old piano won't bring any dead elephants back to life.

Hi Asherstreet533 Sad that "people" killed the elephants, buffalo and on and on.
Did you do anything about that?
If some part of an animal made it's way into my furniture 50 or more years ago is my business.
It has grandfathered acceptance. Don't like it, don't buy it. That's your voice of descent. Don't be
a basement dwelling punk-ass kid. What goes around, comes around.

The damage to those elephants is done and they aren't making key tops out of ivory any more. But keeping an antique piano in original historical condition tells its story and the story of the time. Warts and all. It's important.

Just to be clear: that's not the discussion that's being had. Nobody is advocating for the use of ivory anymore. But if you have a 100 year old piano, it's gotta get cleaned.
