Bluthner overdamper compared to another one converted to underdamper

  • This piano has potential as the tone is warm throughout, but it suffers from loose tuning pins and is also an over-damper action. We've compared it here to another Bluthner upright where we've replaced the over-damper action with an under-damper one.

Great video. I myself am not too bothered overdampers bad damping in upper register as long it's decent on bass and middle registers. I actually like smooth transition in discant area due bad damping. I have overdamper Bluthner and I think the playing touch is just magical. I think that is why Bluthner made overdampers so much back then, because that action is really well designed. My Bluthner is not even regulated for I don't know how long, and I still can play it very softly, and haven't had ever any double strikes on any key. By the way, have you encountered adjustable metallic hammer flanges? My Bluthner has adjustable hammer flanges, it's really handy. If hammer is too tight and doesn't move well, it can be adjusted just with turning screw on flange. I haven't seen those in any other piano. It's straight-strung Bluthner from 1900.

Very interesting. It is all about individual choises. If you change the action you win playing confort in the damping but you loose a bit off the typical colour of the middle register because of the other way the hammer hits the string. My 1909 blüthner serial number 80181 is a overdamper too and after a long time of looking for the best dampers it damps prety well in the discant. But I cann imagine that modern people like more modern actions so yess converting a Blüthner is really worth doing if you don't like the echo on the 4 5 last notes with a damper on. Thanks for showing the difference.

Interesting! Thanks for that :) Seems like I was harbouring some misconceptions as I had always thought that overdampers were just an older design. Also the tone on the converted one is stunning! Very rich.

Just wondering if it's resale value demands you replace the action and the wrest plank at the same time. It is strange that the action has had attention to the hammers, unless the condition of the wrest plank is due to being kept in a centrally heated room.

Hi Rudy, Devon is lovely, I was brought up on the south coast.
thank you for your kind comments and for watching our videos. I will ask my father, I believe we use a Renner upright action. I will get back to you ASAP. Best wishes, Evan
