I introduced this film to a class of undergrad and they all fell in love with the mystery of it. Especially with the cut ending where the human survivors evolve with the ants.

Good idea showing this one to em! I think I'll suggest some of my teacher friends do the same!

Panos Cosmatos probably drew inspirado from this masterpiece. I first saw it back in the '90s.
0:25 Especially under totalitarian regimes. Robert Heinlein was critical of human societies that attempt to mimic ants. Btw, not all ant species are colonial or collectivist. The jack jumper, for example, is an individualist species.

Masterpiece I don't know, hidden gem sure, and yeah after watching Beyond the Black Rainbow, he definitely could have got some ideas from this.

I've always loved this movie. It's an unpolished gem. Saul Bass was a graphic designer, and this comes through strong in many of the images. Plot and character aren't as well developed. Still, this film was ahead of tis time and played with some big ideas. Thank you for the review.

I agree! I didn't know that about Saul Bass but it shows in his work. Very impressive!

Just watched this gem of sci fi movie it was way creepier knowing it was ants that had evolved intelligence. Could this really happen to us as a species?

Phase IV is an excellent Hard sci fi movie, the likes of which were destroyed when Star Wars came along...which drove all the studios to drop hard science fiction and try to cash in on the Star Wars phenomenon. (And yes, there are a few exceptions) This and the unfortunately titled "Demon Seed" , "Andromeda Strain" , "Rollerball" and "Soylent Green" are quite excellent, and are great examples of intelligent science fiction done right. I love Star Wars, but unfortunately it destroyed hard science fiction movies for a generation. Hard science fiction is making a come back and there are quite a few good movies that have been made in the last decade or so.

Very good point, I hadn't thought of it like that, but your absolutely right. I love Star Wars too but ever since then we haven't gotten much science fiction like this!

I agree. Nothing wrong with "PEW! PEW! PEW!", but its not the only kind of science fiction. Maybe "The Expanse" has opened the door for more hard science fiction.

Terrible things usually happen when movie directors and actors try to do science.
