#14 The Red Hot Chili Peppers Madison Square Garden 09-02-1996 [Rare Video] Anthony Kiedis - Vocals Flea - Bass Dave Navarro - Guitar Chad Smith - Drums Acacia Ludwig - Backing Vocals Rain Phoenix - Backing Vocals
All of their guitarrists have/had a unique style, they've all been great in their own ways. Plus, they have all shaped red hot chili peppers music. I absolutely love this band.
dave navarro is great but he just doesn't fit with the rest of rhcp but i love him in jane's addiction his style of playing fits in more in jane's addiction
@@juliusrock4214 I care ;) So there. For real though, it's not just one chord. He changed the entire chord structure of the chorus, and it just doesn't fit the song as well as the original. The way it harmonizes with the vocal melody messes with the entire vibe of the chorus.
same, but anthonys singing inability made me choose the downvote. they also had to put 2 people in chorus while they couldve had john doing their job and also dave's- and maybe having some extra time to meanwhile heat a spoon
it's the evidance on how great dave navarro is - he can play john songs without bullshiting like john does when he explains why he doesnt play dave's songs... because of his shitty pride an amazing song like my friends is buried in the past...
no he didn't he didnt play the chords the same way and it was bugging the crap out of me, the last chord at the end of the verse was missing a note that makes it sound beautiful.
Navarro is a great guitarist. I loved him in Jane's Addition. However, this performance is BORING. That was what was so great about Frusciante, even when it sounded like he was fucking with the song he was trying to play it differently. This performance is clinically perfect. It replicates what we've already heard too closely. I don't recall Navarro doing this with Jane's Addiction. Maybe because it's not his song, it's not his guitar licks. I dunno.
I hate it, when everyone is dissing Dave just because he played John's songs..no what the fuck? dave does an awesome performance on this, and OHM is one of their best albums, and if you think navarro sucks, check out the jane's addiction, and then tell me that he sucks..Just because he doesn't play like John doesn't mean that he's shit..I actually think that this guy is better soloist than John, but John is better for funk, so shut the row of and enjoy the music!
Navaro sounds alright here. But hes litterally playing a chord wrong in the chorus. The final chord of every chorus riff is objectively wrong from the original lol
Good shit. Usually look for performances of OHM songs (considering they never touch on the album these days besides Pea, sadly - a shame, even if half the stuff might not fit to most you can't deny that something like Walkabout would be great to hear), but this caught my eye. God, I wish I could've seen them play live with Navarro. Hooray for being only five at the time, I guess. ;[ By the time I'd even find out about the band, they'd had John back for a few years.
its not that dave navarro cant play certain parts i would imagine he chooses not to do it identically to john!!! dave is an incredible guitarist!!!! i am a john fan over dave so dont try telling me john is better please
This is in my opinion, RHCP's 2nd best line-up, "losing" (for the lack of a better word) only to John Frusciante's and yes, better than with Slovak (R.I.P) and Josh.
all guitarists have there different styles...maybe everyone familiarizes themselves with the chili's as john the best and original,as they peaked as a band with him...baring in mind the original four of the band with slovak.
If I close my eyes and listen to any live version of of UTB I can always tell it’s Navarro on guitar because of that 4th chord he plays in the chorus, it’s not quite the same one John plays but it sounds very beautiful
Why can't Dave be singing the last part, he sounds so damn good at Woodstock and Reading 1994 when he sings but they wouldn't let him in 1995 or 1996 and put these terrible background singers when Navarro is more then capable.
Navarro plays cleaner than Frusciante but Frusciante is a WAAAAYYYYY better song writer. Love them both for their contributions to RHCP. I just will forever love Frusciante the most. He is the reason they are so big!!
Oh....you read Scar Tissue. You must be an expert. FAIL!! Anthony wrote the words....John Frusciante wrote the chord structure and most of the melody. Read more than one book before posting again.
Doesn't fit in what way? He was the best guitarist for rhcp and no one will ever be able to replace him. I think what you are trying to say is HE personally doesn't fit. His capability and his style is perfect.
It's different in a number of key ways. The biggest one is that he changed the entire chord structure of the chorus, making the chorus itself sound a lot different from the album version (and imo, not in a better way at all). Also the slow, smooth way he plays the verses is a long way off the mark from the original too. The original is smooth peanut butter with a bit of crunch, while this is just cold syrup.
some of the comments here about dave are just stupid. he's an amazing guitarist. yes he doesnt play john's songs as good, but it's not bad. just had a different style for rhcp. but these "dave sucks" comments are just ignorant. go listen to jane's addiction before you start talking shit for no reason.
@ml3276 Its not him. John was still very much a drug addict and had nothing to do with the chili peppers again until 1998. It does kind of sound like him though.
its not just john they all hated that time in there lives and dont want to look back on it. i heard that john has never listened to one hot minute at all.
Well he is a good singer as he proved on his solo album, but he doesn't really have the right voice for this kind of song. He cam't really sing falsetto like John does.
@fuel2obsessions That´s true!!! Now have to see if Josh Klinghoffer fits better than Navarro, I´m sure he will fits better but...nobody can replace Frusciante at all!
No they're literally the wrong chords, right before he starts saying under the bridge really bothered me he played 1 chord with embellishments on the high e but the whole chord is supposed to move
@@mh7667 Whether they are 'right' or 'wrong' is all a matter of opinion, but they are different chords than the original song. Not just 'embellishments,' they are actually different chords, making the progression in the chorus different than the original song. Maybe some people might prefer it but I sure don't.
Relax, Navarro is a great musician, Frusciante is a great GREAT musician, Josh is a great musician as well, everyone has a different style
+Romina Trinidad Aren't you forgetting someone? rip
+Romina Trinidad THANK YOU
+Darrin Connor Jack Sherman? ;)
Jack Sherman, Hillel Slovak, Arik Marshall...?
You nailed it....
Com o John, nunca que o Red Hot precisaria de back vocal!
Well, by wrote i understand words, not chord structure or melody.
Dave plays john's songs better than john himself
woahh slow down there buddy lmao
john jaxon i love john he is a great guitarist but i like dave more
john jaxon i love john he is a great guitarist but i like dave more
You like Dave twice as much. to be specific.
Filipe Matias yeah, because i'm a huge fan of Jane's Addiction too
NAVARRO,FRUSCIANTE AND KLINGHOFFER KICK ASS
Stop Talking Shit And enjoy The Musik
I wonder how Hillel would play this song
Best comment for me! Cheers
He’d probably refuse seeing as he was the OG guitarist. Or he’d probably turn it very psychedelic thrash
With Hillel this son probably could never got written, sadly
All of their guitarrists have/had a unique style, they've all been great in their own ways. Plus, they have all shaped red hot chili peppers music. I absolutely love this band.
Dave Navarro did a great job here!
Agree
everyone bothering about navarro's style, but no one noticing that anthony is perfectly in tune!!!
Dedass
Bullshit, the first 10 seconds of his singing proves otherwise. Maybe your ears suck?
Sounds just like on SNL, so no, he wasn't really that in tune.
No he isn’t 🤣
he blamed john on SNL for his own singing incapacity
RHCP always have had great guitarists, not for nothing they join them
Flea is one of the best bassists
Navarro gets a bad rap, but despite his different style, I thought he fit the Chili Peppers well.
This performance was without soul...Dave is nice guitarist but he was so different style than rest of band ;)
Bullshit, why without soul becouse he don't do faces throw solo? He nailed it.
Yeah with Dave Style and the complete performance and the background singers made this an epic exceptional excellent live performance
What an amazing guitar player
dave navarro is great but he just doesn't fit with the rest of rhcp but i love him in jane's addiction his style of playing fits in more in jane's addiction
Dave is such a smooth player and the backing vocals are phenomenal.
That wasn’t him on back up vocals smh 🤦♂️
@@gregallen1
He does sing and has a mic. But yeah, I have listened to it since and heard all the voices. 😳
Did you think 4:13 was Dave? He doesn’t sing backup here but he does in other performances of this song
Keidis was definitely not in the place he loves in the mid 90s
Dave's Style, Tone, Voicing is flat-out amazing! Dave really dressed up the guitar parts 🤟
He plays this song more gently than Josh and John. I like it and I think it really suits.
One of the chords during the chorus is wrong
Yes, it's low.
No one cares
It sounds absolutely awful 😔
That's dave version .
@@juliusrock4214 I care ;) So there. For real though, it's not just one chord. He changed the entire chord structure of the chorus, and it just doesn't fit the song as well as the original. The way it harmonizes with the vocal melody messes with the entire vibe of the chorus.
I actually don't mind this live version at all, Navarro changed it up alittle bit into more of his kind of style , but I'd rather frusciantes anyday.
same, but anthonys singing inability made me choose the downvote. they also had to put 2 people in chorus while they couldve had john doing their job and also dave's- and maybe having some extra time to meanwhile heat a spoon
navarro's serene and tender way of playing this song sounds soo beautiful to me
it's the evidance on how great dave navarro is - he can play john songs without bullshiting like john does when he explains why he doesnt play dave's songs... because of his shitty pride an amazing song like my friends is buried in the past...
Dave Navarro played the intro better than JF himself
Lol that’s a good one
I love when Dave play the bar chords instead the put the thumbs up on guitar neck. Nice!
no he didn't he didnt play the chords the same way and it was bugging the crap out of me, the last chord at the end of the verse was missing a note that makes it sound beautiful.
Ik this was forever ago but yeah he j plays an e maj instead of the original emaj7
Navarro is a great guitarist. I loved him in Jane's Addition. However, this performance is BORING. It replicates what we've already heard too closely. I don't recall Navarro doing this with Jane's Addiction. Maybe because it's not his song, it's not his guitar licks. I dunno.
who's singing the back up vocals? It sounds like a recording of Frusciante almost, ha
I don't think Dave sings
There's a woman singing behind them Navarro wasn't even near the microphone lol
Rain Phoenix was their backup vocalist for this tour
Rain Phoenix is one of the best singers I've ever heard. She's really good at it, so.
I don't think Dave Navarro's reading of this classic is bad but John Frusciante does better in my opinion...
lol@Funk
Navaro sounds alright here. But hes litterally playing a chord wrong in the chorus. The final chord of every chorus riff is objectively wrong from the original lol
It’s on purpose
Anthony and Dave were going SUPER slow then Chad kicked in and brought everyone up to speed. The Peppers rock.
Random but I notice that Navarro plays bars different than John :D
JF uses the thumb like Hendrix & Mayer
Good shit. Usually look for performances of OHM songs (considering they never touch on the album these days besides Pea, sadly - a shame, even if half the stuff might not fit to most you can't deny that something like Walkabout would be great to hear), but this caught my eye.

Elebreed they play aeroplane very often now at there shows
Love Dave's version
its not that dave navarro cant play certain parts i would imagine he chooses not to do it identically to john!!! dave is an incredible guitarist!!!!
i am a john fan over dave so dont try telling me john is better please
John is better
He was showing respect.
somehow I think the lights fit perfectly with the phase the band was going through and one hot minute
absolutely heartless
That guitar tune ❤️
This is in my opinion, RHCP's 2nd best line-up, "losing" (for the lack of a better word) only to John Frusciante's and yes, better than with Slovak (R.I.P) and Josh.
I actually Navarro was great on this performance

As long as Flea and Anthony are together in a band I will like it
The only 2 essential members of RHCP...from day 1.
Great job by Navarro . He changed some chords. I guess he didn't want to bother to figure them out 🤔
If I close my eyes and listen to any live version of of UTB I can always tell it’s Navarro on guitar because of that 4th chord he plays in the chorus, it’s not quite the same one John plays but it sounds very beautiful

It seems like he chose not to LOL , I like the back up vocalists too, AND a dope performance haha dave makes the strat look really cool
This was on the day I was born! 09/02/1996 :)
I think Dave played it pretty good. When I saw Josh play it, it seemed kind of muted and a little too soft. But of course John plays it perfectly!
Navarro plays cleaner than Frusciante but Frusciante is a WAAAAYYYYY better song writer. Love them both for their contributions to RHCP. I just will forever love Frusciante the most. He is the reason they are so big!!

O Anthony com cabelo grande parece a Alanis morissette !!!!!!!!!!
kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
This was when he was drug dependent, so his voice probably sucked in 96.
When mtv was cool
Would I be killed if I said I actually like Dave's iteration of the end of the song better? That guitar duet at the end is chill inducing
Frusciante is the best
Doesn't fit in what way? He was the best guitarist for rhcp and no one will ever be able to replace him. I think what you are trying to say is HE personally doesn't fit. His capability and his style is perfect.
That's gotta be like watching someone else raising your kids for John.
20 years today...
@JCmicho Yeah I don't dig it. I think the best version is the snl w/ frusciante.
Rain Phoenix lo imita bien a Frusciante!!
I love that dave rhcp just sounds different from the regular rhcp
The best song of RHCP...
Omgod yes he gave out his hotel room omgod
+ 3:50 / « Hey , Rain ! »
100% X3
Playing this song with bar chords is a sin, a sacrilege to John and Jimi himself.
Dave is an original Rocker. Not a Hendricks/Jazz clone
Fuckin comments like this 😷
Lmao not every guitar player plays w their damn thumb. I play w mine but I’m not gonna shit on Dave for being a more traditional guitar player.
Dave redid a lot of the chord voicings in this tune. They sound ok, but the originals were much better.
john has left the band
Mais vale um Frusciante no backing que dois Figurantes kkkkk 04:13
who's doing the backing vocals here?
Could be Rain Phoenix...?
Is Dave Navarro!
Angela loves you
Hey o hey hey
we'll never know that, but he kicked ass too
very rare! Thanks for posting
A song is a musical arrangement and melody. A poem is a group of words. Anthony had a poem, John made it a song.
@ml3276 That's not him. John was so wasted by drugs at that time he was skeletal and stayed in his house.
Just read an old comment saying he probs kicked Daves ass too haahahaha if u dont know look up under the bridge john fail 😂😂😂😂
REALLY? Dave played it exactly as it is on the album. So how could they have played it better?
Nope, he didn't. But it was ok, in his own style and variations.
John plays it differently every time.
All the Frooshie disciples expect Johnie clones

Awesome.

why's dave not doing backup vocals?
i think dave navarro is a good guitarist, but under the bridge is john frusciante's song and dave schould not play it
you people can say what you want to. I know intermediate guitar players that could have played this song better than Navarro.
its not just john they all hated that time in there lives and dont want to look back on it. i heard that john has never listened to one hot minute at all.

@fuel2obsessions That´s true!!!
Now have to see if Josh Klinghoffer fits better than Navarro, I´m sure he will fits better but...nobody can replace Frusciante at all!
Dave did ok on this...since he didn't actually record this song. SO everyone can't really hate all and all
@ml3276 no it's not... this is 1996 and john was still in seclusion and addicted to heroin
Where is the Jimi Hendrix Frusciante style in this shit????
Não adiantaram anos tocando under the bridge. Dave navarro nunca se esforçou para tocar as notas corretas ao menos.
for me Dave play under the bridge good with his way of playing...
@JCmicho yeah, but it seems like her purposely plays it like that.
Anthony wrote Under The Bridge... read Scar Tissue before talking.
i love navarro and OHM but him playing the wrong chords in the chorus and bridge is really bothering me :/
He plays the right chords.. he just adds different embellishments. If he played the wrong chords they'd be out of key
No they're literally the wrong chords, right before he starts saying under the bridge really bothered me he played 1 chord with embellishments on the high e but the whole chord is supposed to move
@Numbawan Fker I mean I figured that but let's just say there's a reason John made the band famous

Janes Red Hot Chili Addiction 🤘🏻
You forgot Ari Marshal and Hillel man!
@pudgywudgy probably, but it made my ears bleed
I want to see them play
Even Josh plays this better
Did John or Dave write this song?
oh yeah, hillel kick ass too!!!i miss him
