I never connected the 2 games, but man... the Sims totally copied this games aesthetic, detail, and overall style.
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised. Will Wright had a knack for looking at a game and seeing a completely different, better game underneath it, and accessing it by removing the basis of the game you were playing. He came up with SimCity while making Raid on Bungeling Bay, and decided that building the bases you were blowing up was more satisfying than actually blowing them up.
I have this game and it is one my my favs. I got this and general chaos at an electronics boutique warehouse sale back in they day. Both have given me hours of enjoyment!
I wanted this game for a while it is definitely hard to find for sure.....great to get a FNA, it just don’t seem like a Friday without it......hope you and yours are doing well

This was one of my favorite games as a kid. Doesn't get enough love. You also need to leave the room, pause the game to the map, and press A B and C to make the super scare explode, scaring the family member to maximum. It's great

Geist on the Gamecube... You play as a poltergeist who possesses objects and aniimals to scare people, so you can possess them in order to solve different puzzles and figure out a way to get your body back.
I'm definitely all in favor of seeing Friday Night Drive-In, but ONLY if the first episode is Beetlejuice ;D

"Haunting" takes me back to a better (& healthier?) time; when EA's reputation meant so much more to gamers than it does today.
Between this game and Namco's Splatterhouse 2 & 3, it was all too clear that Sega was willing to do what Nintendon't...

I don't remember the name but I played a flash game on Newgrounds with a similar premise.
This one's a classic; I remember playing it back in the day. Friends of mine used to have it, and after playing at their house, I knew I needed it, too. One thing I really enjoyed beyond the obvious - and this is such a weird and stupid thing to focus on - was the design of the houses. I've always been an explorer at heart, and when I was little, one of the things I used to enjoy doing was exploring people's houses, and when you stop to appreciate them, Haunting has some really neat rooms.
Oh, and even though I'm not a big movie person, I would TOTALLY watch Friday Night Theatre... or Friday Night at the Movies. It'd be a great idea, too, since until recently, every movie commercial ended with "Starts Friday in theatres everywhere..." in that ominous Don LaFontaine voice. I feel like that changed to the violin orchestra just getting more and more intense until a loud drum and the title of the movie after he died, but that's just an unsubstantiated hypothesis. Don't know why it ever changed from - and I know I'm dating myself here - "Coming soon to a theatre near you!" See? I'm rambling already; I'd definitely watch a movie channel if you started one!

Used to mistake this game as an adaption of the movie Little Monsters, Polterguy kinda does look like the ghost/monster Fred Savage becomes friends with.
He does totally look like Howie Mandel's monster character.

Neat, I heard about this game recently. I don't remember exactly where or when, probably last year someone was streaming it for halloween or something. I thought it was a neat idea, and didn't even make the conceptual connection to Beetlejuice.
Such a weird game. And I wonder if the Polterguy is part of the Skate or Die universe, he was one of those that died. 😟

I've heard of this over the past few years, as a couple youtubers have rediscovered it, but I always thought it looked kinda lame. Like, tonally? It's one of those things that struck me as having more of a weird 90's failed Saturday Morning cartoon vibe a la Beverly Hills Teens or something. I never, _NEVER,_ noticed how many similarities there were to Beetlejuice though! I feel like I'm seeing in a brand new light now, lol. And yes, I know Beetlejuice had a Saturday Morning cartoon - fun fact, the voice actress who played Lydia in the cartoon is now the voice of CLAIRE REDFIELD in the Resident Evil games! Isn't that crazy?
At any rate, great review! I feel like actually checking this one out now. And also, I'd absolutely sub to a side-channel about old movies if you just want to give 'em the Friday Night Arcade treatment. Friday Night Matinee, perhaps? :D
Still need a remake/remaster or a new game of a haunting ghost sims game.
just take the concept of
Haunting: Starring Polterguy, and Ghost Master, and Tecmo's Deception.
and blend them into a game.
I just discovered this game over 20 years after owning an original Sega Genesis. It is pretty funny, creepy, and unique, and I liked the Beetlejuice reference- I was thinking the same.
I LOVED this game so much as a kid I recently had to track one down on ebay (complete for bout $12 so if u want one its easy to go get it), dig out my Fat sega and show my daughter.... Who was like "is this a horror version of the sims"... I told her yes to keep her playing.
Please don't review or play the actual Beetlejuice games. Play Avenging Spirit for Game Boy instead.
I discovered this game just a few years ago (5 or 6..). It was a good and fun experience to play through this game. But I lost to the last boss because I wasn't able to deal damages to him... I never played it again since...

This reminds me of a game called Ghost Master except that game had a team of ghosts.
Some of the scenery reminds me of Gotye's video for State of the art. I vaguely remember my cousins playing this back in the day.
The Surprise Scare is you leave it in the room with a family member and you leave and press start and you’ll be on the map and press A, B, and C and the gift will explode go back to the room and when they run scared they’ll leave a large amount of green goo
My local retro game store has a copy of this. This video has me interested in buying it! It's pricey but definitely a collectors item and looks playable!
I've never played this for some reason as a kid I thought this game would scare me...but if your looking for more trap like games look at deception on ps1
Ghost master is available on Steam for Five dollars. not sure how well it runs on moderns systems however. IIRC it like this but closer to a RTS.
I played this one a lot as a kid .. so nostalgic for me ... sega had quite a few good ones ... just finished watching videos about kid chameleon, decap attack, quack shot, and a few other classics .. the list is endless when it comes to classic genesis and snes games in particular for me

This game is excellent while hard to actually finish its very fun to play

Hey to use the super-scare ability you have to plant the present 🎁 leave the room and pull up the map then press A,B,C and boom.
My friend collects for the Genesis so he got this a few years ago at PRGE and it's definitely good fun!

I played Polterguy just a few years ago as I never had a MegaDrive. I think its one of funniest games of all time. Great graphics, sound, setting and idea. I only really hated the dungeon part which spoiled the game for me. But, logically there had to be something like this in that game I think. I just wished it would have been something less frustrating. You jump from a immensely fun game part to a really annoying.
Yeah, the underground parts were probably necessary in some form but it is annoying and frustrating and really zaps the fun of the game. Not sure how it could have been done differently, but I'm sure there was a way.
What a weirdly construed title. Haunting: Starring Polterguy? Was this an attempt to create a new mascot? It doesn't make any sense that they'd advertise it that way. Why not call the game Polterguy's Haunting or simply Polterguy?
Yeah, you could have had a whole slew of games featuring the Polterguy.

To use super scare you have to plant it in room with a person in then exit that room open the map and activate it from there. Youll see like a mushroom cloud on the map.
Then when you go bck to the room youll see the victim scared in a corner.
They also drop a bigger blob of ecto when they run off with this method
