    Its never too late to change your diet. A few years back I was working at Weimar Institute in California and we had a 92 year old come into the program who was on oxygen and could not walk more than 4-5 steps without having to sit down and rest. Yet after 3 weeks on their lifestyle program with a healthy whole plants foods diet he was off oxygen, walking up and down hills without stopping. Change is possible, it just takes commitment to act upon your desires to be healthy and live with a healthy mind and body.

    This father and daughter partnership really works and is so great! Jenna asks the best questions and gets her dad to explain in ways that everyone can understand!     Love this... my fav so far! This is the best, most educationally info-packed podcast I've watched so far!! Nutritarian has changed my life, health, stamina. Never thought I could rid all meds, ride mtn bike again, walk 1-3 miles again when just one year ago I lived like a 68 yr old crippled, and couldn't move without 400mg of Celebrex. No need for Celebrex, no omeprazole, no sleep aids... 70 pounds lower. Now I'm trying to research if there's a more natural, nonsurgical way to rid "calcified"? bumps on knuckles that caused fingers to be deformed? Suggestions, Dr. Fuhrman? I'm not thrilled about replacing my distal finger joints! Thank you, Dr. Fuhrman and Jenna so very much!

    I have a blast following a WFPB dietary pattern (as a 44 YO male who has been obese a couple times in life...I'm now 5'7, 118 lbs with a 28 inch jean size and nicely visible abs for the first time in my life...also great cholesterol and average blood pressure readings (both have been too high at my most obese), and a ton of energy throughout the day).
    Following a regular mix of whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, tubers and mushrooms, I land consistently in a "carb/fat/protein" ratio of aprx 60/20/20 on a total caloric intake of a little over 2,000/day (I don't count calories, but once in a while I plug data into Cronometer for entertainment), with a total protein around 90g and fiber from 70g-80g.
    My body responds great to this type of nourishment. To those out there skeptical, I encourage you wholeheartedly to dive in 100% for a few weeks and see if you feel notably better (if you're medicated up, inform your doctor first...some quick responses to dietary changes may require med adjustments on the fly). Final note...try not to undereat. This is a dietary pattern that seems to me to naturally shed bodyfat while leading to a high level of satiation, but only when you craft your meals with balance (i.e. no 100% kale salads for an entire meal).       This is inspiring for me. Have you had a DEXA or InBody body comp done? What is your lean muscle mass & body fat %?

Haven't done a body composition test of any kind yet...to be honest my aesthetic improvements were less my focus, and rather a natural byproduct of my work to craft an eating pattern that helped me to feel great and get my blood pressure and total cholesterol in a better place.
      If I had to visually estimate (crude, I know) based upon photos I've looked up, I'd say I'm somewhere between 10% and 15%. It would be interesting to know...I'd be super curious from a DEXA scan to learn what my visceral body fat amount is.

I'm pretty comfortable believing that there's a sweet spot for most people that exists at the intersection between dietary pattern, body comp, and fitness level that will lead to a solid health span. It probably requires some adjustments to diet and exercise over time, but I imagine the best health outcomes will occur somewhere between the extremes of both.
      Not that fit, yet...but working on it! 🙂 Hope you're having success on your health journey!

      @@Mikathedog100 He does not advocate it at all. I have been following him for years. He believes that if it helps you follow a better diet than eat a little. It is better to have more plants and nuts and seeds then to not have them at all. Eating Chicken and beans and greens is better than eating just chicken and pasta for example. The meat needs to be a "side" so to speak not the main part of the meal. His website, for example, has recipes that include meat but only in small amounts.

    So glad I found this video. I am 68 yrs old and have been following the Nutritarian diet for three years now. My health improvement has been pretty miraculous. I think my fat intake is adequate but now I can see I probably could use a bit more protein as I workout pretty vigorously. I`m going to increase my seed intake (hemp, chia, sunflower) with about one once of styrian pumpkin seeds and maybe a few more tablespoons of beans and lentils. I`m so happy I discovered Dr. Fuhrman when I did. He is my number one mentor when it comes to Nutrition. I question nothing he teaches in all his books. All backed by studies!

    Thank you for this great streamlined information, Dr. Fuhrman! I have just started following your program, after 5 1/2 years on Keto/Carnivore. Those diets were good for the first 2 years, I lost a lot of weight, but then started gaining about 1 1/2 years ago, and couldn't lose weight, no matter how little I ate. Was down to 100 lbs at one point, and am 123 now. Am 5' 3", and small boned, and would like to get back to 110. I was also feeling very unwell, and knew I needed to make a change. I was plant based before starting those diets, so it isnt too hard to go back to those habits. Three days in, now, and already feeling much better. My skin was awful on Carnivore, and is already getting better. Will stay tuned in for updates 😊

    Im a homeless 62 year old veteran man in san diego. I live off of 300 dollars a month. So I can't eat well, and the food that nice people give homeless people is mostly unhealthy and processed carbs.
    I buy a tub of protein powder a month. I buy almonds and dry roasted peanuts. I buy sardines from dollartree. String cheese, beefjerky, cheap bologna from Walmart and peanut butter.
    At this moment 25th of April i ran out of protein and another homeless man made me a bread and egg sandwich.
    I say all this lead in, to point out the best protien is the one you can afford and eat.
    Not everyone has the ability to choose meat, organic or plant based protein.
    In my humble opinion, it's not important which you eat or how much you eat ( eat as much protien as you can), it's important that you exercise every day, to either enhance the food choices you made yesterday or to mitigate the food choices you made.
    Here's my experience. I sat in my car with depression for 3 years, 23 hours a day.
    I hurt all over and couldn't walk half a block.
    9 months later, and starting with 5lb dumbbells, I can now deadlift and squat 400lbs, ride an exercise bike for 20 minutes, and do yoga for 45 minutes. I go to the gym daily, even if sick.
    I still hate life, but at least im healthy and depressed 😂. I eat terribly unfortunately. It is what it is.
    If you exercise daily, making better food choices will follow. If a human takes all that energy and effort to workout daily, then the mind won't let a person waste all that effort, and you'll start eating better. (CONSISTENCY in a little daily weight training is the secret to better health, longevity And Quality of life.
    Bones, mind and organs will benefit from just a little a day, regardless of what you're currently eating.)
    This is just my experience and my opinion.
    Also, I'm always complimenting couples, and family members that workout in the gym. I want to compliment you two for being a great example of family.

    Edit 27:41 im watching the rest of the video and it sounds as if you have an agenda or bias.
    Bodybuilders in 2024 natural or guys who take steroids, watch their diet very carefully. Like your father, science based nutrition is their life. So to say that they eat unhealthy and don't care about " vitamin C" for example is not logical.
    They micro manage every aspect of their lives. Not always healthy mentally.
    If you truly want to understand others, watch their body of videos and watch many different natural Bodybuilders videos.
    Like you said in the beginning, people can cherry pick data.
    Also, in the study 29:00 did it say how many had preexisting conditions who died earlier from meat diets and how many didn't have preexisting conditions to diabetes and cancer and if those people died earlier due to meat consumption.
    I think it's good for us viewers that you give a reference to studies mentioned, in the video description so that we can look things up.
    But I think Dr. You look great and good on you for helping others. 😊

    I am a 2x kidney transplant patient and had a thyroidectomy last September. I was advised not to be vegan because I need protein and fat. So I started eating meat. Well I went back to vegan. My kidney function all the way around is better. Working on thyroid but I have l learned is to up my plant protein. I feel much better.

    Just wanted to mention, I already knew Dr. Fuhrman for several years, eat as close to a nutritarian diet as possible, and heard him speak several times before, but this podcast is from another level. His daughter has a very different way of communicating essentially the same knowledge, but both father and daughter complement each other incredibly well. I'm personally a very rational thinker, so I'm already convinced by all the facts Dr. Fuhrman can provide, but his daughter makes these conversations more personal and emotional, which I think is great for also convincing a less rational crowd. We need both to get this message to as many people as possible. Father and daughter clearly bounce off each other beautifully and it's a joy to experience. Keep up this incredible work.     Although I am not vegan, most of my calories come from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts and seeds. I do appreciate your perspective and agree with the idea that fat is not a bogeyman; I’m typically between 15 to 20% of daily calories from fat. I think the key is to get most of your calories from either unprocessed or minimally processed foods. Thanks for your efforts, keep up the good work.

    I have been working my way through the diffrent plant based protocals, first Mcdougall, then Barnard’s, now Brenda Davis, my macros are 12% protein, 51% carbs and 33% fat, all whole food. I’m hopeful that this will be sustainable!

    I am Carol Burgess and live in Arkansas. We, my husband and I are in our late 50’s. My husband had a triple bypass and lost all his muscle and fat. He is now a skeleton and looking like he can’t hold up his own lack of weight. The doctors put him on a plant-based diet, and he is trying. The big problem is he needs fat. He does a cardio workout every other two days and uses some weights with it. I believe that is what saved him, he worked out his whole life, even the doctor said he had a strong heart. He needs to stay away from oils, processed foods. How can I get some weight on him with healthy foods?

    Great podcast, thank you both so so much! I understand your perspective of olive oil but have recently heard some credible (seemed to me) research on olive oil versus whole nuts used in a healthy diet and soft and hard end points were practically the same, with cancer slightly favoring the use of extra virgin olive oils. I love nuts and will continue to let it be a main fat source in my diet but I’m curious on your take of this research, I can share the info if needed but I’m sure you may be in tune with the information.
    Second point that I hear a lot about animal protein vs plant protein that I would love for you to touch on more please is that plant proteins are not as bioavailable to the body as animal protein. What, if any, truth do you believe is in this? Thank you!!

    I wonder what you think of Brooke Goldner's approach to curing autoimmune diseases. She just has an article out on 3 case studies (out of thousands, if she's to be believed) curing autoimmune with a high greens, low protein and high omega 3 protocol. I feel her approach is adjacent to yours. After all, fasting also probably works in part because it is very low protein.

    30g is the minimum protein and the body can absolutely use more than that. 30g minimum is because it will breakdown into 2.5g - 3g of leucine which stimulates muscle protein synthesis. Getting less protein than that in a meal is almost a waste

    great, thank you both so much- I started living on the Nutritional diet for 2 months- and feeling so good and by the way lost already 10 pounds… the pnly thing is my addiction to a sweet desert.. whst do you think about some real dark chocolate after the meal- i just love it, sometimes i mix it with a banana, some hemp seeds and soy milk-❤ just lovely.. ibtalked about to my grown up kids- and they will see my change, so everything is possible.     Isn't the ratio of omega type of fats just as important as the amount? What about heart patients? Would lentil sprouts be as nutrient dense as whole lentils?

    To continue on my comment from earlier… I personally am very clear on what a Whole Foods plant-based lifestyle is so my recommendation as I mentioned above goes to the other 90% of those who need to make a change who have realized that they need to make a change, but don’t know how to so my recommendation was to make a clear to everybody so that they can be successful

    Hello. I am 56 years old and two years ago I had two cardiac stents put in. I had been vegan for five years prior to that, but not completely clean diet. I am 5‘4“ tall and weigh 122 pounds. Since my stents I have adapted my lifestyle to the nutritarian way of life. With my stents do I still have a shot at longevity?

      I believe your heart disease is reversed by this type of diet. Dr F wrote a good book called the end of heart disease. He explains there.

    Are those nuts and seeds you are eating raw, steamed, dry roasted and at what temperature and for how long, or oil roasted and at what temperature and for how long? That's a lot to worry about if you don't know the science or what you are doing.

    Some doctor says "carbs, the dose is the poison". Others don't say it that clear cut but imply that any fat is poison. Eat everything in moderation stands still.

    I try to follow a whole food nutritarian diet but I never can find this answer about protein. Everyone seems to agree that you should have less protein if you have kidney disease. I have stage 3 kidney disease and I am 72 years old.

    Eat Nutritarian "Plus". Do as Dr. Fuhrman says but add sardines, wild caught salmon, oysters, and one pasteur-raised egg a day. Done!

    I have a specific comment about plant-based doctors and those professionals in the plant based eating world. Each professional on its own merit is very clear about what we should eat and what we shouldn’t eat, but what is not clear, concise, and extremely important is that when you wrap all the professionals together, there are mixed messages and too many schools of thought. I would like to recommend that all these professionals get together under one umbrella and say the same thing even if some agreements have to be made one way or another.. For example the Atkins diet we all know exactly what that means. The South Beach diet we all know exactly what that means. That grapefruit diet, we all know what that means. so why can’t there be a plant-based diet or give it some other name so we all know, without a doubt , exactly what that means.

      There is no such thing as a plant based doctor as that is not an accredited term by anything. You should only get diet advice from a real Ph.D in nutritional biochemistry with awards and honors and or a Nobel Prize with a long term track record of being right for humankind such as Roger J. Williams, Fred Kummerow, George H. Whipple, William Parry Murphy, Edward Adelbert Doisy, Frederick Gowland Hopkins, all 6 would say that single ingredient meat, poultry, fish and eggs are good for you in moderation and that dairy is ok in small amounts if you like it and are not allergic to it but a human is an omnivore and they should still consume a balanced diet in the 4 basic food groups.

      I mean we all know that plant based diet means not eating animal products. It’s just macros and types of plants you should be eating that can differ between doctors. I think all the plant based diets can be healthy and lead to a healthy relatively long life. Dr. Fuhrman is very passionate about researching the studies regarding longevity and avoiding disease so if that’s what you’re looking for I think his diet is great to follow. Dr. Michael Greger says the same stuff Dr. Fuhrman does. There are others that say mostly the same things with one or two differences, like whether we should eat overt fats and how much of our diet should be starch. But overall the message is whole plants, lots of carbohydrates from whole plants, avoid the sugar and processed food, eat clean plant protein. Some will say avoid overt fats during weight loss but I think some nuts and seeds are necessary.

    I like the fact that you are not like the other vegan fanatics, you're more practical. What about C:15? Butter has the highest concentration of it. Would it be worth it to add about 5g of fermented organic butter? It would also provide some butyrate, some CLA, and good bacteria. Perhaps it could be taken in the evening with just vegetables, since saturated fats have a tendency to increase insulin resistance, meaning it might be better not take it with a high carb meal. The fat in the butter would also help absorb the carotenoids, the lycopene, etc from the vegetables.

    I agree mostly but I do add some butter and ghee and cheese for brain and dha and cholesterol benefits, I have tree nuts allegry I tried soaking and everything it just makes me bloated and gassy immediately after eating any nuts but I see that peanuts and coconuts I feel ok also I can not digest Chickpeas, tofu and beans but I am ok on lentils...
    One big sign I had was when I had 3 whole wheat breads I had red rashes meaning I have gluten allergy and after getting these out I feel good.
    I just can not have tofu, chickpeas, beans, wheat and any tree nuts- I am allergic to these. I eat rice and plants and dairy(lactose free) and lots of fruits and fresh fruit juices

      Dietary cholesterol is not needed, our bodies produce all we need. Dairy does nothing to help the brain, dairy is inflammatory to the body. Your digestive issues are likely due to gut flora imbalance. Many people who don’t eat properly have gut health issues. Not being able to digest legumes and nuts is not normal, it’s a sign something is wrong. Look into restoring your gut health. Then you can introduce a small amount at a time and increase slowly as your body gets used to them. You need good bacteria in your gut to digest lots of fiber. You may have an overgrowth of bad bacteria and not enough good bacteria. Yeast and/or bacteria overgrowth in the digestive system can also manifest as food sensitivities.

    Replacing your snacks with cashew nuts may make you end up in hospital ! Eating a kilo a week this women was healthy but she had kidney failure because she replace her health diet for a much better diet eating only cashews every night !

    Side note, a relative of mine, was not planted based, smoked, drank and lived to 90.
    If you are thriving eating a certain way - why rock the boat to make a change for change sake.

      Most do not live that long and MOST are on multiple medications by 70 and can’t live a full quality of life anymore. I want to be active and able bodied for my entire life. Not spend the final years in a nursing home suffering. You do you though.

    You can still go into ketosis without being a meat eater, so yes ketosis shows short term health benefits so these studies on carnivore are very miss leading. If you practice a fasting protocol along with nutritarian diet you will have a more powerful benefit on your health. Ketosis resets the cells, cleans them out and fasting gives your digestive system a break. Problem is fasting is very difficult to do since most peoples lives revolve around eating and food.

    I love the fact that Dr Fuhrman is willingly admitting the vegan diet alone is not enough to keep us healthy, must doctors push the diet with an emphasis on high starch low fat.

      I ALSO EAT A BIT OF VERY LEAN BISON AND SOME PASTURE RAISED EGGS. BUT MY FAVORITE MEAL IS MAYBE 1/4 pound bison with lots of onions, garlic , tomatoes and tons of assorted beans. At 73 years young and my hubby 76 we exercise daily and watch the processed foods. No prescription drugs and great blood pressure. But we both believe your dad is the very best example with the very best quality info. Maybe one day I will take your classes.

    Guys, let's please stop discussing this things over and over again. So many different opinions, studies, experiences to say what ratio of macro and micronutrients we need. It's not something that's set in stone, nor is it important to over-analyze. I'm saying this as a nutritionist because it's gone so far and it's something that honestly is just a never ending cycle. Each person will require different ratio of macro and micronutrient depending on such a wide range of factors. There's no perfect amount. Let's get beyond this endless cycle and focus on things like salvation, eternal life, living the right way. Jesus Christ is real, heaven and hell are real, there are very important things people are neglecting to think about that are so incredibly important. Diet, nutrition, and medicine is obviously important, but there are hundreds of videos all giving their own opinion of what is right and wrong.

    The Keto and Carnivore people act like animals on the internet for anything that is counter to their diet--even if there is a paucity of data supporting long term benefits (v. studies of detriments). Have a chat with their heart and kidneys in 5-10 years and see what those say if they are even alive or well enough to talk.
    I think that the "anti nutrients" refer to lectins which can be reduced by cooking methods.

    2:00 -- Sorry but fat is fat. Might be some differences in the exact amounts of the different fat in different foods, but a fat is a fat. lol .. Studies are almost useless. NO way a study in humans can be controlled over a long series of time. So the results are always a question mark.
