Tartini: Violin Concertos, Sonatas

  • Laura Marzadori pairs these delightful discoveries with two D major sonatas written not for the standard trio-sonata disposition of violin, bass and harpsichord, but rather an instrumentation that anticipates the string quartet. Their writing is full of bold harmonic moves as well as typically brilliant figuration for the violin, most elegantly dispatched here by Marzadori on her Guadagnini violin.
    Giuseppe Tartini (Pirano d'Istria 1692 - Padua 1770) was a virtuoso violinist, composer, theoretician and teacher, a spider in the international cultural web in a time when Italy was the centre of the musical world, his violin school, the “School of Nations”, attracted musicians from all over Europe.
    Tartini’s 4 part Sonatas are modeled in 3 movements, fast-slow-fast, and bear witness of the incredible skill of Tartini’s string playing. They are highly melodious works of great beauty and charm. The two Violin Concertos are virtuoso works, paving the way for the great concertos from the classical and romantic era.
    Excellent performances by violinist Laura Marzadori and the Ferruccio Busoni Chamber Orchestra conducted by Massimo Belli, who already successfully recorded similar works by Czerny, Viotti, Rolla and orchestral works by Wolf-Ferrari.
    Composer: Giuseppe Tartini
    Artists: Laura Marzadori (violin),
    Nuova Orchestra da Camera "Ferruccio Busoni",
    Massimo Belli (conductor)
    First recordings of concertos by a legendary virtuoso of the Italian Baroque.
    Concert master at the Teatro alla Scala since 2014, Laura Marzadori studied with Salvatore Accardo and Giuliano Carmignola, as well as playing in the Orchestra Mozart under Claudio Abbado. She has given chamber-music concerts with internationally renowned soloists such as Antonio Meneses, Andrea Lucchesini and Bruno Giuranna, and worked as a concert master for some of the world’s great conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly and Antonio Pappano. She gave the world premiere performances of Respighi’s Violin Concerto in 2011, followed by a warmly received recording of the piece. She has also recorded the beautiful but little-known concerto by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari.

    In 2012 I visited Venice, and on the Saturday we went to Padua, where, as well as seeing the relic of St Anthony, we saw the monument to Tartini, another composer who is not well enough known, but Brilliant Classics are doing a sterling job in reminding us why he ought to be.

    • @f.sarastre7491
      @f.sarastre7491 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Sir, may I offer you a different view, without starting a dispute? I am very confident that this is NOT a pic of Tartini -- who was actually a priest, and looked nothing like the subject -- who, in turn, is Jean Marie Leclair (possibily [?] a pupil of Tartini). I happen to have studied 18th-Century French culture at the Master's Level, and can further assure you that this (pastel) portrait reflects friendly self-confidence -- not the smirking of vanity/"attitude". If you happen to value counterpoint, let me yet assure you that Leclair utterly "blew Tartini our of the water". He has been called, "The French Bach" -- and rightly so. Let me add that I LOVE the grace, elegance, symmetry, expressivity, and transparency of Tartini's music -- as I have, for over 50 years (when only people with a degree in music *might* have heard of him). Yet we have no factual reason to believe that the (actually nice-looking) Leclair is saying anything more than, "Allow me the pleasure of showing you what I can do," in this portrait. (Poor Tartini was rather a bit homely.)

    • @f.sarastre7491
      @f.sarastre7491 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Silenus As I already opined, Leclair *earned* the title because his command of counterpoint rivals Bach's. Listen to his violin concertos, for example. I suppose you can counter-argue that Leclair was a tad less loquacious [as Sir Arthur Hutchings has rightly observed]. I suppose you could further counter that Bach used more chords of the seventh. So be it: I reject that thinking. Leclair, far more than Bach, exhibited musical synergy. Unlike, for example, the Bach of Brandenburg #1, his counterpoint was never a case of failing to see the forest for the trees. Bach was "turgid and confused," as never befell Leclair. Thanks for asking -- I presume . . .

    Finally a painter that has put a bit of "soul" in his painting! A very good painting, I think, being a portret-painter myself. That Tartini seems to have been a friendly, happy man. The painter must have enjoyed making this portrait: in the 18e century it was not so usual to portrait people who produce a big smile....generally people look grim, as if they are angry or want to conquer the world, or dead-serious, no time for laughs, look at my expensive clothes......and the music seems to go very well along with this lovely portrait.

For me, a portrait says a lot about the composer's personality, and the style of Tartini's music is very different from Mondonville's music. They should fix it because a lot of people are having this error. I wouldn't buy a CD of Beethoven's Symphonies with the Bach Portrait as the main theme. I think this is not just a mistake, but irresponsibility.

    By and large, I highly value this album. However, I am puzzled as to why the cover is a portrait of the truly excellent, and still rather underappreciated Jean Marie Leclair (whose mastery of counterpoint outshines Tartini's, I submit). I want to say that I have read, over the years, about L being a pupil of T: And yet, I have been unable to vet this, today.

    • @ednimed8034
      @ednimed8034 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      actually, isn't he an other "underappreciated" French composer, Mondonville instead of Leclair?

      @@ednimed8034 1) Those who love the "Classical" might be more inclined to prefer Mondonville over Leclar: I do not. Show me an opera composed by Mondonville, and I shall well reconsider. "Scylla et Glaucus," by Leclair, is a minor masterpiece.

      @@f.sarastre7491 my question was related to the portrait of Mondonville that you indicated as a portrait of Leclair, not discussing the merits of those composers... I am not interested in these kind of comparisons "one is better than an other" just as if composers and their works were supermarket products.

    How come Tartini’s music is illustrated above with a portrait of the French composer Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville (1711-1772) painted by Maurice Quentin de La Tour !?
    What’s the idea (although Tartini was definitely not as good looking as Mondonville, a younger colleague) ?
