Here's what spiders mean in this video (and no, it's not just badassary!):
"You should see me in a crown" is a line that she's heard from James Moriarty in TV series 'Sherlock'. (Her visuals for this video in the concerts are James Moriarty and spiders.)
This is how Sherlock describes Moriarty in the show:
"James Moriarty isn't a man at all. He's a spider, a spider at the center of a web, criminal web with a thousand threads and he knows precisely how each and every single one of them dances."
This is originally written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle:
"He sits motionless, like a spider in the center of its web, but that web has a thousand radiations, and he knows well every quiver of each of them."
So, the spiders symbolize the character she's playing. She's basically talking about herself taking over the world, but understandably does it in character.

She and Finneas get a lot of inspiration from TV shows and movies they watch. For another example, I think "WHEN I WAS OLDER," the song they wrote after watching the film ROMA, is a completely underrated Billie Eilish song. The effects in the song to make her sound under water are super cool. And, as usual, the lyrics and production are superb. It builds and builds.

I always looked at it like a very serious song about female emancipation. If she wore a crown it would be in the sense that female spiders dominate the males.
Female spiders often eat the males, inspite of or instead of sex. The ultimate matriarch.
Every woman at some point hears men hollering at her, adressing them as "their babies", think they can own them if they are pretty. If she/the character was in charge (wore a crown), those old possesive motherfuckers would suffer some reciprocity - and THAT would be pretty. This men's world is about to go down, the last sexists and misogonists are almost obsolete, it is a nothing town, she is going to run. Every male will bow, as she could just kill em all at any time if she felt like it.
On a more personal level, she might be confronting so she used to be with... (for whose ocean eyes she once fell) and she sometimes is having fantasies of revenge (watch me make em bow one by one). So eating him like all the other male would be her favorite thing to do (your silence is my favorite sound), he might be able to choose whether there will be sex before she eats/kills him, she does not even care (what is worse for you? living or dying first?).
To me the spiders had nothing to do with Moriaty from Sherlock Holmes, but with the traditional gender relationships, turned upside down to the extreme in that species.
Note what the crown signifies. Traditionally if a girl wears a crown, that crown usually does not come with power. The girl is a princess, pretty and soon to be married to give birth to the heir to the thrown. This woman wants the crown because she wants to make this world hers, she wants a kingdom and she wants to rule them all. Cruel or not.

Thom Yorke loves her, Dave Growl said she reminds him of Kurt Cobain. I think you’ll love “Bellyache” by Billie Eilish as well. “Ocean Eyes” is the song her brother wrote & produced for either himself and his band at the time. Or for her dance teacher to use for a routine after Billie suffered a dance career ending injury when she was 12. Or little mixture of both. Ocean Eyes had over 1000 views and likes on SoundCloud the morning after recording and posting it that night. It’s the song that put Billie on the map at only 13yrs old. Both were written & recorded when she was between 12-15yrs old. BILLIE & FINNEAS ARE PURE TALENTS IN THEIR OWN SINGING AND PRODUCING AREAS OF EXPERTISE.

I love Billie, and I love spiders and tarantulas, I have 15 Ts and 26 spiders, but what she did is actually dangerous. New world, so anywhere in North or South America and the islands have urticating hairs. Those hairs have barbs in them and are very like fiber glass. It's their main defense. They kick them off. Now the ones she had, Grammastola pulchripes, or commonly known as the Chaco Golden Knee, are prob one of the most gentle Ts of them all. However, Tarantulas don't have a brain like us, they are super close to being blind, even with 8 eyes. They also will cannibalize, so that's why the one on her neck recoiled when it touched the other spider. So, those urticating hairs could have gotten in her mouth, throat, in her eyes, and could've made her blind. Now, I didn't see them kick any hairs off, but tarantulas can't be trained, so you can't fully trust them and they are so delicate. If one bit her, she wouldn't shaken it off and it's plump abdomen prob wouldn't burst when it hit the ground.

I really like listening to you. You have a really lovely energy. Great reaction! I love that you take the time to look at the lyrics. It can be really helpful to read them WHILE listening. For her, especially in the songs you haven't heard yet, the emotion in her voice is PART of the communication, so reading the word and hearing the emotion behind it at the same time really helps feel the song on a new level. Keep in mind if you continue to explore her music! You have yet to hear her best stuff in my opinion! (Even though everything she does is amazing on multiple levels)

I don’t know if this was intended, but the line, “You should see me in a crown,” is, I believe a reference to Moriarty from Sherlock. I always thought maybe the spiders were an extension of that, because Sherlock compares Moriarty to a spider at the center of a web of crime.

  • @WonjiDharma

👍 great review man, glad you mentioned Rob Zombie because some metal fans thought it was insulting him. Even type o neg fans went berserk because she had their shirt on too.
All the spiders and videos are real. No CGI anywhere. Spiders are very closely connected to the crown if you read Sherlock Holmes. He describes the underworld character, Moriarity, as a spider who uses the web to alert to even the slightest disturbance. That part of Holme's description ends with Moriarty declaring "honey, you should see me in a crown."

General theme of the song and the video can both be summed up with one lyric from the song
"I'm okay, I'm not your baby, if you think I'm pretty you should see me in a crown"
She was 13 when Ocean Eyes dropped and people thought she was this "cute little teen pop star" in a way that came off as patronizing. This was her way of saying "fuck all that noise, I'm a badass and I'm going to own this town."

What i get mostly from the song, especially my favorite part is when she says ''I'm okay, I'm not your baby...and if you think I'm pretty....You should see me in a crown''. Then of course the spider comes out her mouth, what I personally think and feel is people in general thinking you are this kind and gentle person that you cannot do anything and you are below them, especially coming into the music industry or something new in life in general. But when the spider comes out her mouth it shows that she's more dangerous than she looks and doesn't wanted to be belittled. It's like saying ''don't think because i am young and new, that I can't do something explosive to this industry''.

So eating him like all the other male would be her favorite thing to do (your silence is my favorite sound), he might be able to choose whether there will be sex before she eats/kills him, she does not even care (what is worse for you? living or dying first?).
To me the spider metaphor broke with the traditional gender relationships, turned upside down to the extreme in that species.
Cruel as it may seem, the male spiders are sex partners and prey, naturally indifferent to a female.

The first time I saw that musicvideo I tossed my phone into the wall out of fear, I was NOT prepared. I have arachnophobia. I still screamed a little now, even though I´ve seen it many times before. I like the video but my body just automatically reacts to the spiders.

my opinion billie is punk hop metal, there's a howard stern interview you should see, the whole family is there, they talk about how they didn't ever praise her or tell her they were proud of her, they wanted her to find her value in herself not in others, it's great you said that, she has a lifetime of being proud of herself in her album. great review. new to your page. enjoyed this review

Also, I agree that the tarantulas (sorry if I spelled it wrong, english is my second language) are the least scary. I feel like they are more like a small pet... But the smaller, chunky ones *PUKE*

Interesting to see these instances on TH-cam where unlikely segments of the music loving population try other kinds of music. Young black men hearing classic rock for the first time, and Heavy Metal heads listening to Billy Eilish.

I think metal and hip-hop, at least this kind of pop, have a lot in common. The sounds that make you move and nod your head are virtually the same just one with electronic drums/bass and the other with real distortion guitar/bass/drums. But the chugs, breakdowns and the beats in this stuff all make you want to move the same.

  • @jackmcnamara6973
    @jackmcnamara6973 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I would say the beat in this song is closer to trap than anything else.

Would love to see you react to some Melanie Martinez - "Soap" or "Mad Hatter". I was very 'we are the rock kids' for a LOOOOOONG time and she's one of the more recent pop artists that made me branch out more actively than occasionally passively hearing a more pop-py song and thinking "eh, not bad I suppose"
