Scott Hall helped change the landscape of professional wrestling when he returned to WCW in 1996 to form the nWo. The nWo became one of the most succesful factions and storylines in wrestling history, helping WCW defeat WWF Raw during the fabled "Monday Night Wars"... but over time, creative decisions concerning the nWo would leave fans either confused or reaching for the remote control. The break-up of The Outsiders and the storyline Scott Hall got involved in is considered by many to be one of the worst things WCW and Eric Bischoff produced during this time period.
When Kevin Nash formed nWo Wolfpac, Scott Hall wasn't on TV. When Hall returned, he initially sided with Kevin Nash but Scott soon turned on his partner to join nWo Hollywood. Over time, a storyline developed that took a lot of inspiration from Scott Hall's very real personal issues where Scott would show up to WCW television shows after having one too many beverages.. and the storyline got so ridiculous that even Scott's family pleaded for it to end. This is the story of the Televised Downfall of Scott Hall.

Using them to go against eachother in a storyline was just lame. They both came in to WCW together and were best friends, it felt too personal. Like I was fighting with my best friend.

I don't think Hogan ever wanted to be a true Heel, because the existence of the Wolfpac was making Hogan a true dark heel but he obviously didn't like not being popular in that era. He wanted to be the cool heel. Hogan woulda made more money with good storylines and an actual feud with Nash but his ego got involved and ruined everything.
I had to shed some tears now that my idol growing up as a kid is gone. There’s always a story when it comes to wrestlers outside the ring that have been in their sad dark moments like Jake The Snake Roberts. If any documentary that deserves a re-watch is Outside The Razor’s Edge: The Scott Hall Story. Very emotional. Thank you, Scott for all the great memories. One of the best storytellers in all of wrestling.
Also the resurrection of Jake the Snake Roberts is definitely worth rewatching or watching if you haven’t seen it

Razor’s Edge, Outsiders Edge or it’s or original name when he was in WCW as the Diamond Studd. Whatever you call it, it’s one of my favourite finishers ever too! Only move that looked more devastating was Hogan’s leg drop (calm down people it was a joke and I’m being sarcastic as that has to be one of the worst ever especially for such a big star in wrestling)
I've met Scott Hall a few times at 8 seconds in Orlando Florida before it shut down. I used to also see him riding his bike in Oviedo where he lived. He's actually a really nice guy when he wasn't trashed, which was rare back then. So glad he got his life back together.

Seeing Hall go from being one of the best Intercontinental champions and part of one of WCW's most dominant tag teams to this is truly heart-breaking. And in a way it reflects how desperate WCW were to get their ratings back up at this time as the WWF were on the fast road to recovery, pulling further and further ahead of them.
then again, WWF pulled this downfall/ substance abuse angle stuff multiple time. Few examples come to mind: jake roberts and hawk
@@agiuggio1 That's true, but seeing WCW stoop to its competition's level in order to boost the ratings (The Hawk drunk angle going on at about the same time) was a sign of the company's impending downward spiral.
Desparate...lol. As opposed to the classy WWE, with such angles as Jake the Snake's addiction, Mark Henry sleeping with an 80 year old woman who gives birth to a hand, Eugene the mentally disabled wrestler, Kane being a pedophile, etc etc etc

WCW was the king of swerves. And not in a good way.
I barely watched the WCW as it seems there was ALWAYS "outside interference", group beatings, DQs. Got boring real fast.
These angles were always really tough to watch, even during the "Attitude" era. Seeing him & Hawk like that was beyond sad. Scott's lucky to be alive.
Of Hawk it crossed the line
I hated Hawk's storyline. WWE last year went through it with Jeff Hardy.

TBH, people tend to forget that there was a lot of tasteless garbage during the Attitude era. You can blame Vince Russo for a lot of it.

I had a run-in with Hall back in 97’. My stepdad took me to a WCW house show and after it was over, we ran into Hall and Nash at a 7-11. Cool dudes. Glad Hall is in a better place these days!

The one distinct event of this angle I remember was Nash going into different bars looking for Hall and when he eventually found him he was near passed out laying in a bathroom stall drooling...
I always wished Hall joined the NWO Wolfpac instead of the NWO Hollywood. He needed a good face run in the WCW.
The original plan for the spilt according to Kevin was that Nash and Hall would start the Wolfpac and Hogan and Savage would led NWO Hollywood. It’s was gonna be battle of the generations. Bischoff couldn’t control them together, they were trouble. so he put Hall with Hogan and Savage with Nash. Lol
Especially considering Hall coined the term Wolfpac and it originally meant him, Nash and X-Pac as a trio.

Hall understood the business. His laid back attitude and willingness to do the job. Surely impeded his rise to the top.
@Wales Eakes I disagree. He started in the 80’s in the AWA. If anything his mishap at the strip club. Then subsequently drug and alcohol addiction, did him in.
He never had the drive to be the top guy. His buddies HBK, HHH and even Nash to some extent worked a lot harder and played politics much more in the back. Hall was always just along for the ride.

@@timewithoutconsequence4611 Hall wasn't absolute trash in the ring like Warrior and Goldberg, but he was never more than average in-ring. His punches looked decent and the few moves he did looked good, but that's it. He wasn't amazing like HBK or a ring general like HHH.
Where Hall shone was his charisma and character work. Sure, he could have great matches with great workers like Shawn or Bret. But Hall couldn't work with just anyone and produce a great match.
Nash was even less talented in the ring, but he got to the top because he was more ambitious. He also knew how to play the backstage politics game better than anyone besides Hogan.

To this day I’ll never get what WWF nor WCW were trying to prove by bringing up a drunk storyline with Road Warrior Hawk and Scott Hall respectively. It just goes to show you that there’s edgy and just going to far even for the edgy product. We don’t know what went on in these guys real lives and only know what we saw on television as entertainment.

I personally thought the Outsiders splitting up and Scott Halls Drunk gimmick was some of Kevin Nash’s best WCW character/acting work.

As tasteless as this angle was, Hall doing the abdominal stretch and reaching for a drink instead of leveraging the ropes was way too funny.
I remember watching as this unfolded and having a deep sense of sorrow for what he was going through. I'm glad he was able to turn his life around. Really enjoyed watching him work before the wheels came off.
Such a talented wrestler, a damn shame his personal issues overshadows his work in the ring.

He was okay in the ring, nothing more. His best match (Mania X ladder match) was good because HBK carried him. Hall had a lot of charisma, a good look and was great with his character. But you can't say his in-ring work was good.

@@fattiger6957 he had a solid program with the kid and a couple really good matches with Bret Hart. I think he was a solid wrestler in the WWF especially for his size. I didn't really watch WCW, unfortunately, so can't comment on his in ring work there.

Scott was the man, so many fond memories of him in WWE and WCW. I’m really happy that he’s managed to get his life back on to a much better track
It’s still hard to believe that Scott Hall is no longer with us. I started watching in 2005, so pretty much his career had come to an end compared to the previous 2 decades. But of course with TH-cam starting up and whatever classic content wwe would put out like dvds and their 24/7 on demand service it was a treat going back and watching his WCW stuff
Scott Hall was one of my favorite wrestlers during this era. It is ashame that neither organization saw him as world title holder, but he was definetly a world class main event wrestler.
I remember turning off the tv in disgust a couple of times when Scott was pretending to be wasted and he was getting picked on,. They ought to be ashamed of the way they treated him.
It was something Eric Bischoff said years later he regretted ever giving the green light to doing at Creative's suggestion to make Scott's real life issue with booze a storyline for WCW
He said it was a personal / professional low for himself as a boss and as a man

Also: not only was it horrible taste, to say the least, to turn Hall's problems into a storyline - it also flies in the face of people like Eric saying since that they had Hall's best interests at heart when sending him to rehab.
Hey Yo! Scott was world championship material. The guy could just about do it all. The drugs ruined his life to near death, he could've possibly been even greater. Glad he's alive and doing well and in the WWE Hall of Fame. Razor Ramon will always be my favorite.
Just appreciating him while we have him. I still remember some of his promos from when I was a child he was so raw, laid back and philosophical. I knew him before I knew Scarface. And I always loved when he flicked his toothpick at the camera.
Last Call Scott Hall was just very sad to watch and it honestly really hard to watch. I know there was a reliving wrestling video on this and its definitely worth a watch if you can find it

You are totally correct with WWF not being above using the same tactics as a storyline. While the Scott Hall addiction story was playing out, Hawk of the LOD was doing his addiction story in WWF.

@@stevebarnes4805 In my opinion, that led to the downfall of the NWO and ultimately WCW. Too many NWO members taking up too much camera time, rising talent always being squashed, seasoned veterans being buried by those with "creative control". NWO should have been kept as the "anti establishment force" like Stone Cold Steve Austin. When Sting joined WWE and was buried by Paul, McMahon's destruction of WCW was complete. If anything, Sting should have been the one to end the Undertaker's streak. That would be a way of giving respect to WCW for its part in making WWE what it was. At the end of the HHH vs Sting match at 'Mania, Bret Hart should've come out and nailed HBK.

part of bringing it out into the open was due to them being left with little other options, they had tried getting him to rehab... Multiple times, and it was just not working. so a different, (as nash said.. "Tough Love") approach was tried, an attempt to really get through to Hall, that he needed to change his life.

As an inherent addict myself, he hardly deserved any World Title, maybe early on in WWF, or a short reign in WCW. It just wasn't meant to be.

Scott Hall lived a street over from me in Georgia. When I delivered a pizza to him. I was star struck. Said I was a huge fan growing up, but he kinda shrugged me off.
As great as the 90's were for wrestling was, there were some horrendous storytelling and this is right up there

Scott Hall was the first wrestler I really got into when I was a young boy. I remember playing as Razor all the time in the WWF Wrestlemania game for SNES. Razor Ramon(Hall) will always have a special place in my childhood memories.
He may never have been a role model, but Scott was always one of my hero's!
The most WCW thing ever to have Nash and Hall on the mid card instead of the main event and once again no clear cut winner. WCW would do that so often with interference you never had any clean wins. It is no wonder WWF won the war. Nash vs Hall could have been an excellent main eventer but nope.

I still remember watching this angle back in the late 90's. I just remember thinking it was so sad; even though Hall was a heel he was easily one of the most loved and popular wrestlers period. I just remember thinking he was just wasted as a talent. Now I look back I realise that Nash was as well.
Nash and Hall had booking power in WCW. If they were wasted, it's their own faults. If anything, Nash got far too much of a push. He was boring as hell to watch.

I heard somewhere that Scott Hall had personal demons long before he even got into wrestling in this case in the early 80's when he working as bouncer at a strip club in Florida. He got into a heated argument outside of the stripclub with the boyfriend of one of the strippers that Hall might've had a thing for. The guy pointed a handgun (.45 caliber, it think,) at him and the it started a fight ending with Hall getting a hold of the gun and most likely un-initially discharging the gun and killing the man. Hall never got over this event (developed PTSD) and turned to alcohol to deal with it. Hall was really lucky that he didn't get arrested for this and even during his pro-wrestling career that he was able to keep getting hired/re-hired.

I was 12 and my brother was 14 when this angle aired. Our dad was an alcoholic at the time, it was so insane to us thinking this was for real considering what we had to see the issue at home and now on tv. I didn't know til years later that Scott actually had an alcohol addiction, but as a child who was growing up with seeing this addiction from a parent, it was so crazy to see a wrestler drunk on tv. I'm very happy to say my dad's been sober for 14 years, and knowing that Scott Hall is living sober and healthy is what matters now and I wish him all the positive karma for him in life.

Watching all this back, I can’t help but feel this could’ve been a good storyline. People’s main problem is that it involved Halls real life addictions, and it wasn’t executed that well.
My question to everyone here who didn’t like the angle is, is there a good way to do this storyline? Can we have addictions and personal issues in wrestling where it’s not seen as low or distasteful?
Answer: No, because it's disgraceful & distasteful being an addict to begin with. The companies publicly shaming/embarrassing those with the addictions doesn't help & honestly, does more harm than good by feeding/enabling the problems through the storyline.
@@TherealRNOwwfpooh TV shows cover addictions all the time. What if a wrestler whom didn’t have a real life addiction played the part? Can this storyline can be done well?

Shame how they treated Hall the way they did, and WWE was no better, either.
I remember watching him back in high school days, he always got drunk before going into the ring then when I heard he went through so much outside the ring, then finding out that whoever in WCW tried to make it as an angle and showcase it for everyone to see you suck and I hope you were proud, I felt for Scott Hall.
You know, WCW using Scott Hall's demons in an on air storyline is really no different than WWF using Road Warrior Hawk's demons in a storyline.
While many considered the "post-death" of Paul Bearer - CM Punk/Undertaker angle as distasteful, I can say that William Moody(Paul Bearer) would have loved that send off. I was a pen-pal of his, and his love of the business included that being part of one last angle with The Undertaker would have made him very happy.
But using someone's "real life" demons(at least, while they were still going on) actually IS distasteful. Both companies are guilty of this.
@Jav Mar I had found his web page, which had an email address on it. I didn’t think he would reply, but he did. When I met him in person at a local show, he remembered me from the subject’s we had discussed through email. We kept in touch through email until his death.
This is probably the most depressing part of his WCW run, and it should've NEVER, absolute NEVER have been a storyline. Look I'm a fan of the Jeff vs Punk feud, but that never contained footage of Jeff being (in storyline) wasted, it was more of a storyline about overcoming your demons. I totally agree with Bischoff's view on making storylines feel realistic, but this storyline was going way over the edge.
Except Jeff Hardy lost that angle to CM Punk, because his real world demons as a druggie forced WWE to fire him again. Then there's the whole mess leading to Victory Road 2011.

My Dad was a terrible alcoholic, I was fourteen watching this had switched back to WWE at the beginning of this storyline as it was just to hard to watch. nasty stuff.
