Good on you that you made the correction! Seems like a wonderful, albeit very expensive camera system. I wish I could explain to my wife why I need it. Cheers from Switzerland.
The one drawback of Hasselblad for me is its lack of Capture One Pro support, forcing me to use Hasselblad’s Phocus software. While you can use LR, you don’t get the full breadth of file’s robustness, as far as I understand.
I sold my X2D after a few months. Two things that I didn’t not like were. 1. Focus is very slow. Make sure the subject does not move for atleast 2-3 seconds. And second the viewfinder is slow to activate when you bring the eye to it. Otherwise colors are beautiful and high iso images are pretty clean as well. Will wait for x3D.
Wow, this was such an insightful review! I’ve always been curious about the Hasselblad X2D, and your breakdown of its features vs. other cameras really helped me understand where it shines (and where it doesn’t). The 15 stops of dynamic range and that insane 1/14,000 flash sync are game-changers for sure! But man, those lenses… $6,000 for the ultra-wide? Yikes! 😅 Also, loved how you tested it in Puerto Rico-those cave shots looked incredible! It’s wild how much detail you can pull out of a single file with this camera. And props to you for pointing out both the pros and cons without sugarcoating anything. Super refreshing! One question though: do you think the lack of video capability will hurt Hasselblad in the long run as more photographers lean toward hybrid shooting? Either way, great work, and thanks for sharing your experience!
Glad you liked it. The people who buy hasselblad probably aren't doing it for video. Like I said, many photographers praise it for not having video features.
I never missed video in mine, for video rolling shutter with electronic shutter is so bad that you wouldn’t want to use it (sensor readout time is 300ms). Full frame or even crop cameras do much better job recording video. As for comparison with full frame cameras, the difference is within a couple percent in image quality and you pay three or more times (if you include lenses) for those couple percent. It’s worth for museum archival or reproduction photography and if you need flash synchronization (it’s 1/4,000 not 1/14,000, and for most lenses it’s 1/2,000 actually), although global shutter on full frame does that too now up to 1/80,000 and without moving parts that cause vibration. And it uses crop medium format sensor that OP said in the video, but he didn’t mention that the sensor was introduced in 2018. Full frame cameras and sensors get way more R&D due to the market size, so I won’t be surprised if full frame can actually take better photos (most people can’t tell MF and FF cameras apart in blind test).
Another thing worth mentioning is that their 75P lens is cheaper but it is also made in China vs more expensive XCD lenses that are made in Japan. Nothing against manufacturing in China, but Hasselblad doesn’t say it on their website, and they write it on the lens, but again, they try to hide it and instead of writing outside the lens barrel like with “Lens made in Japan” label, they write it with a very faint font inside the barrel. Kinda weird.
Your manner and style give you a great deal of credibility. Thank you! You may be costing a ton of money, but I won't be taking much with me to the after life.

good corrections and still a great take! I highly recommend trying to get a review copy of the Fuji GFX100ii or S-ii! its the same Sony sourced sensor as the Hass, same 16bit color but lots more features.
You're talking about the detail in the Cave shot because of the 100MP lens.... but at f/22 with this size sensor the diffraction limit is about 7.7 MP. So the 100MP are totally wasted and every other (cheap) lens can deliver this amount of detail fully stopped down. To really use 100MP and have the best sharpness, use f/6 and stack the focus. Using your finger on the screen to focus, is a feature that's on every modern mirrorless camera btw.
Have you guys visited Vieques Island? I covered PR for a travel/destination guide and Vieques Island was by far my favourite area. Probably, out of all the Carribean I've visited, Vieques has been the most beautiful.
@ fair enough. I did the sea kayaking night trip around the bioluminescent bay. That was quite spectacular, but the camera tech in those days wasn’t quite up to filming it. Would be a different story today.
The thing with the GFX100II compared to the X2D is it does both video and photography (though the sensor isn't the fastest reading) It also has better autofocus. The area that the GFX100II fails compared to the X2D is the flash sync speed which is 1/125 of a second. It should also be said that the GFX100sII is a lot cheaper and, for photography, is pretty much as good as the GFX100I. Also, the GF lenses are much cheaper.
You can certainly argue that the Hassy is better because the sensors are individually calibrated, the Fujis get pumped out to meet a price point but, they have a great, and readily available, lens selection. Plus you can use perceived "lesser" brand lights with ettl and hss like Godox.

The caveat is that this is a camera I might never be able to afford, but my gripe with the Hasselblad system is that for such a premium product, the benefit of having such a large sensor means that they can capitalize on truly unique, fast lenses. Yes it would be expensive, yes it might be slow and heavy, but it's already medium format, something like a 50mm 0.95 equivalent (so probably a f1.5 in the X2D terms) would be better for this system.
Would be nice if Hasselblad put out another telephoto lens. The max right now is a 135 mm f/2.8 with 1.7x tc (so up to ~180 mm 35 mm equivalent). Even fuji is limited to about the same.
It would be nice if you could make a short with just the corrections so that those of us who watched it yesterday don't have to watch the whole thing again...
About the video, I agree with the idea that removing such a feature is not nice and I would prefer if they had video if it was good, with the slow readout of the sensor I prefer no video. Everything has a cost in terms of CPU memory and system decisions. The rolling shutter will be terrible. So I hope the next generation has a fast readout sensor and video, but this one is better without it.
I was very excited when I heard of this camera for the very first time. But getting into more and more details I came to the conclusion that this camera has some drawbacks which are simply not mentioned pretty often. - This is not a point and shoot camera. Overall speed, autofocus and precision are still not close to modern full-frame cameras and lenses. - Making use of full resolution and color depth the sensor read-out speed is far below that of high resolution full-frame cameras. - You'd rather not try lenses from different manufacturers. Even with a proper adapter you're limited to the camera's electronic shutter which drastically shows the slow read-out speed and rolling shutter issue. - While I have no idea what the real technical benefit of lens integrated shutters shall be, despite a smaller camera body, most of the original lenses aren't very fast and are extremely expensive. - We will very likely never see something like a 200mm tele. - The marketing might suggest something else. But also this medium format camera is significantly slower than full frame cameras. Though, I appreciate the development to smaller and lighter MF cameras in general. All in all users overwhelmingly say this camera is not meant to be used for moving targets or moving itself. Thus, it would be still limited to a rather narrow application range, like with all medium formats. I don't see any medium format camera being as versatile and as performant as modern full frame cameras. Unfortunately. The IBIS is said to be pretty good, BTW. Though, it's also pretty clear why the camera needs one. Hand-held shots would be rather impossible otherwise. And now, rumors of a 150mpx version are already there, very likely with same or even lower read-out speed. I'd really like to see a high performance medium format camera. But this might be a too high demand for current technology and/or price. For the time being _simply_ switching from full frame to medium format is still rather naive. MF is rather for special purposes. It's still far from multi purpose while not talking about video at all. Where's the original version of this cast?
Good post. If you only post your photos online then comparing an image to a 12mp Sony is fair. If you are a fine art landscape photographer, then comparing it to a 12mp Sony is a bit silly. They are different cameras for different purposes. But appreciated the review.
I assume Hasselblad requested the correction, and I also feel their influence in your verdict. It's understandable that they want more sales from your video not fewer. But do you genuinely believe that the positives that you mentioned actually justify this price? I doubt it.
I really wish you could have taken people pictures and compared, that’s when you could see the difference about the colors science 🧬 my perspective. On landscape. I always use 4x5 or even 8x10
Dude, you are not going to mention the lack of joystick a bit? Just a little bit. Imagine being in a cold country with gloves and struggle to move focus point with a camera in this price range?
Lee's dream has always been a camera with few buttons and a touch screen. I've always been the opposite; I like physical buttons more for the reason you mentioned. A rotator knob for aperture, ISO, and shutter speed is ideal. I'd even love one for WB. -P
Good point. I did mention this and I removed it from the review to keep it concise. It is strange not having a d pad and took me a bit to get used to it.
@@FStoppers My take is that joystick is as fundamental as shutter speed dial. They can make it as minimalistic as they want but the fundamental still has to be there. Moving fundamental functions to touch screen is a no go. You are trying to make the VDO concise, well noted but having no joystick or dpad is one of the biggest omission of the camera. I think it would be interesting if you show the two methods of moving the points. Could you live with touch screen AF? What is your take on it? It is strange that I could not find a single review of criticism for even the most glaring omission. Found one reviewer who said he uses the dial to move AF point and then he went on to praised the cameras. 😂 Not making accusation here, just saying this feels a bit off. Thanks for the response.
Most cameras allow you to slide your finger on the monitor while looking through the EVF to move your focus point. They have been doing this for years now.
I own one of these cameras and it's like one of the worst cameras i've ever used. I think it looks good, i think it feels good, but as soon as i turn it on and try to use it, the screen and the viewfinder and more specifically the liveview feed that goes to them is so atrocious, i just can't frame, can't focus, can't expose what i need. I keep failing my compositions, i can't see my model's facial expression cause it's dark and/or blurry, etc etc... And i hate how nothing is customisable on these. To me these cameras are not made for photographer and i'm mad only seeing good reviews online of people who got them for free. I've passed the return window for mine, by a few months cause i really forced myself to try and use it more, but in the end, it's gonna go for sale. Also i don't know what's the deal with "Hasselblad Colors" cause out of the 100+ digital cameras i've used these past year, this hasselblad is the only one i can't use my preset on and i have to spend ages to get the images to look right to me. I really do not like it's colors.
these cameras have no live view settings (except exposure simulation which i keep off when shooting with flashes) and you cannot adjust the brightness of the EVF either
After using mine for a year and a half the new face detect is pretty good, obviously nothing like a canon, sony, or fuji. Personally in challenging focus environments i just switch to manual focus and use focus peeking to nail the exact dof i want.
@ i don't have a problem with the af, the viewfinder is just so contrasty all the time and the exposure in the viewfinders just changes non stop it's very very distracting, gives me huge headache. I can't see on what i'm focusing cause if my model is just a little backlit, they're just gonna look like a silouhette. And if they're front lit, the face will have so much shadows on it. And even when shooting landscape, to protect my hightlights in the sky, the rest of what i'm taking a picture of id just gonna be full black. I know not everybody is sensitive to that, but i am, and i can't use this camera cause what i'm seing on the screen looks just like a 2003 point and shoot.
Sony makes the sensor for this camera and the sensor really isn't that much bigger than a "full frame" sensor. Comparing it to a cheaper camera system that 99% of people will buy is a fair comparison.

Also i don't know what's the deal with "Hasselblad Colors" cause out of the 100+ digital cameras i've used these past year, this hasselblad is the only one i can't use my preset on and i have to spend ages to get the images to look right to me. I really do not like it's colors.
You need to research live view more. I don’t have the H2d so I don’t know the settings but I did try one at a shoot and the live view was fine.
@ everybody tells me this, but everybody that tells me this are also people that don't actually own this camera like me
these cameras have no live view settings (except exposure simulation which i keep off when shooting with flashes) and you cannot adjust the brightness of the EVF either
Wish I could afford it !
I appreciate that it is a photography only camera. I wanna see more brands do this 😊
I also want a driving only car. I don't like them complicating my driving experience with a stereo, and air conditioning ;)
@@FStoppers 😂👏👏👏
GFX 100s ii producers a superior image with more affordable glass and the body is $4,000 cheaper than this Hasselblad
"superior"
To even compare it to a Sony 😂 if you don’t care about iq (which a photographer should) than this is not for you.
Sony makes the sensor for this camera and the sensor really isn't that much bigger than a "full frame" sensor. Comparing it to a cheaper camera system that 99% of people will buy is a fair comparison.
