    My father was an addict. The raw aggressiveness that rue showed while kicking down the door, throwing down the dresser, putting her hands on her loved ones. I saw it. I lived it. It’s real life. It’s not glorified… I still love my dad. I still think that regardless of the fact that he couldn’t save himself, I always keep good memories of him alive.

    euphoria doesn't gloify drug use. to depict drug use, you need to show the HIGHS of it. if some of your audience has never taken drugs before, then they won't be able to understand why a character would keep returning to them. they depict the LOWS of drug use waayyyyyy more. seeing rue's turmoil is enough to educate about the dangers of addiction. it's a show. it has to look good. glitter doesn't automatically equal glorification. it's called cinematography.

      I agree that they definitely accurately portray a drug addict without glorifying it. I still don’t think young people should watch it thought even with the intent of educating. Because truly, it doesn’t matter how accurate a portrayal of it is, you never really understand it until you know someone going through it.

    My mother, brother, and sister were all addicts. They are all deceased now. One thing I am grateful for is that my sister did not have any children. She knew she couldn't be a mother so she made that sacrifice. She was very loving and caring but she was a dealer and an addict. She is no longer in pain. My mother lived through the pain of losing two of her children before she finally passed just 2 years shy of my sisters death. There are 4 of us left. Two addicts, sober 3 years and sober 1 year. Addiction is hard on all involved.

    I hate the attitude of saying a show glorifies something just because it's talked about. Acknowledging social issues in a plot, or centering a plot around them is not the same thing as glorifying. It was the same thing with 13 reasons why. Shows about social issues like this are important. These kinds of things need to be acknowledged and talked about. and shows like this get things talked about,

      @@shallowtruth1002 I am not saying that the emotions and traumas highlighted in the show aren't real, but referring to the vast group of people arguing that the plot is accurate to most kids' lives in public highschool, when they're just not mature enough to tell the difference. The honest depictions of the traumas are realistic (addiction, betrayal, insecurity, family trauma), but the extremities in the plot are not.

      @@CrownedYeti But is this show about the vast majority? I don't know if they ever said that or insinuated it in any way. These things happen and I'm honestly glad a show like this is available for my younger sister and others her age. The deep lows this show portrays will do far more than any of the dumb ass "This is your brain on drugs" ads my generation grew up with. It's certainly not without critique, nothing is, but I think it's doing for them what Degrassi did for us. 🤷🏾‍♀️

      @@CrownedYeti Kids go through the stuff in this show literally every day. Abuse is extremely common in not only the US, but most of the world, especially considering in a lot of countries, abuse is LEGAL. Drugs? Also a huge thing in tons on tons of countries and it’s so common for kids today to use drugs and or witness someone who is a drug addict. Sexual assault is extremely common, and again, in a lot of places, unfortunately, literally legal. Many, MANY people are assaulted/molested by the time they are adults and those many cases are just the recorded ones. Being part of the LGBTQ+ community and finding yourself is something common too. I think you underestimate how real this show is for kids and teens. This is normal but people just don’t want to admit it because that makes the fact that the world is a scary place, reality. It’s also really not dramatized. Rues drug addiction is literally spot on. The extremities in the show are very much accurate. Be grateful that you’re able to have a mindset that they’re not.

It's shows how Rue's life is ruined by them. Aside from a small handful of rave scenes that look like they're having fun, it's very dark. And even those rave scenes devolve by the end of them. Serious respect to all y'all for covering and reacting to this show. I'd never heard of it, so all my knowledge of the show itself comes from this episode of React. However, too many times in my life I've been the bad guy... Sometimes successfully helping someone I care about to get off drugs, sometimes heartbreakingly unsuccessfully. I, myself, just smoke... That's all. The hard part about stopping is, it's easy for some people, and mind-blowingly hard for most. I never tried drugs because I knew I'd never stop if I started because of my smoking habit. I've passed that knowledge on as best as I know how over the years. Shows like this need to be shown. Kids are smarter than most adults give them credit for... Aside from those, I substituted white powder with cornstarch/sweet & low. I'm glad the show goes into the highs and lows and the impacts on everyone around that person. It's hard, it's rough, and it's cold truth that drugs destroy a lot of lives of more than just the user.

    Opinion: Euphoria doesn't glamorize drug addiction, but rather justifies the abuse that goes along with it. Her never suffering any consequences is unrealistic. Whenever Rue kicks down a door, robs someone, hurts someone, manipulates, hangs out with human traffickers or almost kills her mother with a piece of glass, it's always brushed off as "she didn't mean it like that / it's the drugs doing this to her", she's never held accountable. In real life family, friends, girlfriend would've (rightfully) turned their back on her. Everyone being so forgiving and putting Rue's trauma over the one they suffer due to her is unrealistic and I hope they change that in the finale or season 3.

    • @ashleyholder2218
      @ashleyholder2218 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t find that unrealistic at all. Especially considering she’s so young. She has many people who love and care about her. It’s hard to turn your back on an addict that you truly love. No matter how badly they treat you or the emotional trauma you personally suffer.

    The show is fully of heavy subjects that are important to address, but this show legit is not for kids or young teens. Some of the creators and even actors have said this.
    Just because it's *about* teens, doesn't mean it's meant for them.
    (You could argue the same about South Park, for example. The main characters are in elementary school, but the show certainly isn't for elementary school aged kids.)
    And the reality is, even though what the characters in the show are going through might be happening in real life to some teens, it's not 100% a realistic depiction and it is heavily exaggerated and dramatized.
    So if anything, it's a good source that could prompt a conversation between parent and teenager. Maybe parents could show the scenes with Rue and how her choices impact her life.
    But there are so many other scenes in here that are completely unnecessary for a kid or young teen to watch at their respective ages. There is a reason that shows and movies have an age rating.

    my personal take on wether or not euphoria glorifies drugs is that it tries to show the highs and lows of drug addiction but the times when rue says stuff like "drugs are cool" isnt so much actual glorification but more an addict being in denial of addiction and trying to dress it up to themselves as better than what reality is so they can pretend they arent addicted and that life is all hunky dory so they dont have to confront their issues which to me is not glorification but something addicts and non addicts do. i mean i sometimes do it with my non drugs unhealthy coping mechanisms (like self harm) so it is but it isnt at least not in the way ppl are thinking it is

    Seeing how these kids are so chill watching this stuff and not getting influenced by it, I can tell they've had some nice parenting. Testament is the fact that the mom's are pretty chill reacting to these scenes too. Besides, all these kids are intelligent, being able to see the whole story in euphoria as a third person and nothing more, without getting swayed. I'm 23 and I myself once got agitated enough to talk back to my Mom after watching one episode 😂 (and it turned into an ugly fight finished with tears). Damn I wish to be a parent like this for my kids.

      send her to rehab, especially since she doesn’t show any signs of wanting to get better, like she knows she’s hurting everyone around her but she doesn’t even try? I get that that’s part of dealing with the addiction, it’s so strong it completely blinds u, but apart of u has gotta care bruh. Especially if I was the mom. Either give her a time period, if u don’t try or get better, ur out my house, or going to rehab. Big problem I got with this show as good as it is wont lie, it almost romanticizes depression cuz they don’t bother on giving the characters any hope on getting better. And u may say “well that’s cuz sometimes life doesn’t get better!! 🤓” girl sit down remember that they’re in HIGH SCHOOL. And in middle class. Shit Fezco, who has it worse than some of them, tries wayyyy harder than rue bruh, rue is just bored so she decides to do drugs.

      The whole point of the end of the second season is to show how even tho addicts can't rlly control themselves they still have to take accountability for what they've done that's why in rehab there's a step where you have to make amends. If you just excuse addicts you're not helping them you're codling them it hurts but it's apart of growth and realizing wht those addictions do to you

      Exactly - you have to quote the whole line to be honest about the whole context of the series'.
      It's very much like alcohol, and a whole lot of other things, that seems 'fun' in the first place, but way too many people let it take over their lives - like my father. He was a hotelier so it was an occupational hazard, and he was an amiable drunk - but he was still drunk and it cost him nearly everything.

      Her name is Rue (short for Ruby) not Ruth. She looked pretty bad in episode 5 of season 2 when she was going through withdrawals, that's for sure! As a recovering addict and alcoholic myself, I looked HORRIBLE at my worst! The most f**ked up part is that at the time I thought "I looked good" because I was so thin but I looked sick! And I was sick, in the throes of the disease of addiction! Sober today but it took me a long time to get here! I hope Rue can stay sober in season 3!

      And yeah I agree , my point with that is that people where complaining that it was too graphic, more like too authentic for them. (That withdrawals freakout scene with the 10k flushed drugs felt so relatable and real, Zendaya should get an award for that, as well as the scene where shes high as a kite dancing by herself with no one in the living room, that shit made me tear up)
      Same! Hope she can find the strength somewhere.

    All I know is back when I was in highschool 6 years ago I went through or witnessed almost every single storyline this show went through. I partied a lot but I also played sports full time and on my student leader board. Those "good kids" in highschool 98% of the time are the ones going through what these characters go through most in my experience. Ive run from the police while damn near black out drunk, I've had my photos and other girls projected onto a big screen for boys to gawk at. Ive been in cars with kids that were driving on acid and doing coke. I lived through almost all of this (excluding the extremes of fez and Rue's storylines).

He’s tried rehab but i hasn’t worked out, I have had dreams where the police came to my house and told us that my brother od and I woke up crying. this show actually does a very good job showing how dong drugs and addiction will ruin your life and mess things up for the people around you. I think it's also a very realistic portrayal of how drugs are spread throughout suburbia and shows how easily drugs and other risky behavior can really make your life spiral out of control.
    I do think that there really is no need for the gratuitous nudity but even the actors are tired of it snd it's really the director's perviness that's to blame for that.

  • @PrettyGazi

    I don’t get it how the show glorifies drugs when it literally shows us the aftermath of what happens after that high runs off. Also it constantly explains the audience why drugs are not good and what they do to a person.

  • @urinternetbae
    @urinternetbae 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    At this point, if you feel like the show is glorifying drugs then the issue lies within *you*. If you watch rue literally tear her family apart and ruin her relationship with her friends because of drugs while slowly killing herself and say "hm, yeah I wanna do drugs now" then maybe you need to do a full mental evaluation because there is nothing glorious about that. They showed the highs AND the lows which is the reality of drugs. I saw some reviews from people who watched and they said that the show actually helped them to quit drugs because they realized how damaging they can be to them or others around them! If the show isnt your cup of tea then say that and move on instead of bashing the series in its entirety.
