The enigmatic and mystical philosopher, George Gurdjieff, was a man of many talents. Known mainly for his teachings and writings he also composed music. Although he was Armenian by birth, his musical leaning was towards the European tradition, maybe because the instruments he composed on, piano and harmonium, had western tempered tuning.
This improvisation by Makmed the Miller is based on an improvisation by Gurdjieff.

The 'science of idiotism' was - roughly - a way of classifying a person (human typology) in the context of spiritual development, and a learning tool to help a person see their own composition, flaws, strengths and blind spots in an interactive group setting, via a toast in a formulary manner after a meal. The practice was referred to as the 'toast to the idiots.' In this context, 'Idiot' had both a pejorative sense and and one of 'individuality' (from a Greek root, meaning 'I make my own'). Gurdjieff cited 21 types, from type one, the 'Ordinary Idiot' to type 21 - God, the 'Unique Idiot'. I dare not say more lest I make a fool of myself.

In Gurdjieff's system the term "idiot" is based on the word "id", which means "that". In his system, identifying one's idiot was used as a technique to get further in the work of "know thyself", your mechanical nature. We each behave within narrow limits of type, our "idiot". I hope you are shocked to learn that.
Gurdjieff would propose toasts to all the idiots, i.e. "types". and each one in the room would acknowledge their idiot as the toast was announced. For example, he would toast to all "round idiots" ...the characteristic that shows a person who keeps coming back to their starting point in life...circular path. There are square idiots, zigzag idiots, swaggering idiots, hopeless idiots...as many as 21 idiots. How would you categorize your own pattern in life?

He actually was an extremely simple man (as all ACTUALLY enlightened beings are. Not the thousands of dreamers we are now dealing with)
Good teachers come out and meet the complexity in front of them (seekers / phantoms / identified) which appears as if the teacher is complicated.
The teacher essentially meets the madness in front of them so as not to scare the frail egos causing them to run often hidden in tough stances or teacher complaints.
If you see the madness in history that’s called normal, you are in that category.
You are complicated = ignorant = suffering.
