I was once on a NYC bus and Nic Cage was standing on a corner looking all cool in a leather jacket. Then one guy in the bus started shouting, “Caster Troy!” I think Nic smiled.
And that is my Nic Cage story! Random but all I got!

I hadn't realized this was something people thought until now! Maybe for those unfamiliar with his work outside of the memeosphere will at least give some of his best movies a shot. Perhaps an acquired appreciation will gradually develop, but if not at least enjoy the movies. Joe is Cage at his best and would be my first recommendation. It's an indie movie with some dramatic weight, but it has fun and the characters feel so goddamn real.

Nic Cage was one of the first actors I think who people started seeing the actor instead of the character. As in when you see him onscreen you can't refer to him or imagine him as anything other than just himself. As it goes that's not always a bad thing because Cage made it work for him very well. That being said...I freaking LOVE Nic Cage, he's just amazing in so many ways and about as intense and creative as they come, you can bet that it doesn't matter if the movie is good, bad or in between, if Cage is in it...it's at least gonna be entertaining.

Two things that I couldn't agree with you more on:
    1. Cage NEVER phones it in! No matter what movie he's in, no matter how crap it is, he ALWAYS brings IT in. There's been plenty of his films I've disliked, but not because of him. He's always did his best to bring the Cage magic to whatever he's in, unlike other actors. Best comparison is in Arsenal playing opposite John Cusack. Honestly, Cusack was terrible, it's obvious he was just dialing it in, barely there. Compare his performance with that of Cage, in a totally bonkers performance. Given what I've seen of him lately, I'm surprised Cusack still has any sort of career.
    2. Cage really is a TONE for a film, they bring him in just to be him. And this can be a double edge sword. I'm dying to see his upcoming movie "The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent", where he plays himself, and plays a younger version mocking his movie choices while also being a government agent trying to rescue someone from a drug baron who's a fan of his. This sounds PERFECT Cage material, but I can also see, and worry, how this can be totally be messed up. I've got high hopes for this movie, so I hope the director does justice to Cage

The world owes you a great debt for providing such an invaluable service, sir. It didn't occur to me until the end of this just how challenging it must have been deciding what to include/cut out. It's crazy how you packed so much into under an hour! I remember reading an interview somewhere of Ethan Hawke discussing Cage's style of acting, which is unlike anything he had before Lord Of War. Hawke was excited and praised the hell out of him, specifically how Cage was possibly the only actor trying new, different things with the craft.
There's just so many things from a career like this where you could talk 4x the length of this video and possibly feel as though less ground was covered. This was most appreciated! Guarding Tess is pretty hilarious btw, or it was last time I watched it around 20 years ago.

But the best part is he's come to this organically.
Like, sobad it's good isn't any good if the goal was to fail from the start. That's why The Room is so much better than Sharknado. Sharknado was made by coked up execs laughing the whole way through going "WHO CARES?!?!" Whereas the room was made by a team of baffled new actors, and a fuckign lunatic all trying their damndest and still creating a flop.
The suffering is the difference in whether it's any good or not, as horrible as that sounds to say lol
Nicholas cage has always had a craziness, vs every other shifty actor in Hollywood who BECOMES crazy, in a desperate bid to stay relevant.

For better or for worse, he always stands out in the movies he appear (mostly for better...).
8mm was a movie that marked my life. I was about 20yo when I saw it. I came from a good family, had good friends, was in a small city at the time and the Internet was at its infancy . That movie blew my mind for how crazy some people can be. And the lengths the protagonist went trying to do the right thing under the circumstances. I really enjoyed this movie, not by the gore, because I felt like the protagonist seeing that crazy stuff for the first time and how he asked permission to do what he was going to do. I couldn’t believe this movie came from the same director of Batman and Robin.

Nicholas Cage is one of the best actors ever! People call him a paycheck actor because he lost all his money but he's been rich again for a long time now. He says he does what he does because he considers real acting becoming an entirely different person from who you are as a person. That's why he said he will always turn down easy roles. Because playing a character similar to yourself isn't acting.
