  • A torque screwdriver is probably a tool that's missing from most mechanic's toolboxes. That doesn't mean that the GEARWRENCH 89620 Torque Screwdriver kit is not a great addition to your arsenal. In fact, there are probably many tasks that you do every day in which the GEARWRENCH torque screwdriver would do much more precisely.

I use inch lbs for torx or allen bolts on my rifles. My Scar 17 has inch torque values for all the bolts on the upper receiver especially when reinstalling the barrel which I believe is 62 inch lbs. I use a Scar specific torque tool set to that value just for that exact application. Everything else I use a Utica adjustable torque driver which is calibrated for accuracy. It has an audible and tactile click.

Most people don’t follow the torque specs on their PPE. But good manufacturers publish these numbers for good reason 👍

As an electrician I use a torque screwdriver quite often to ensure electrical connections are torqued properly. This GearWrench driver looks like a Capri Tools clone which is the torque screwdriver set I own. However GearWrench one upped the competition by including long shank bits. Most sets only have 1 inch long bits which are almost always too short for use in electrical work. However it's still lacking in the slotted bits selection with only providing two sizes of slotted bits. Alot of electrical components only use bigger or smaller slotted bits on the wiring terminals. I carry 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 3/8, and even a 1/2 in. slotted bit that gets used once in a blue moon
Also I have seen alot of burned up wires from undertorqed terminals, Also I've seen torque specs that were incorrect and stripped out the lug lol. You really have to use your noodle on the proper torque required because manufacturers make printing mistakes too!

These look really useful...thanks. I rebuilt the automatic transmission in a 1975 Ford Gran Torino many, many years ago, and I remember some of the torque specs were in inch-pounds. The control valve body screws had a torque spec of 20-30 inch-pounds, for example. I ended-up "torquing" the screws by feel because my regular torque wrench wouldn't go that low. This kit would have been really helpful to have.

As an electrician I’m so glad someone is talking about torquing electrical components won’t say how many times I’ve seen devices fail from under and over torque

That could also be useful when tightening band clamps to silicone hoses to the end tanks of front mount intercoolers or couplers to the throttle body and turbo compressors. I’ve over torqued the bolts on the band clamps breaking the bolt. It has to be tight because 30 psi of boost can pop the hoses off and cause a boost leak and possibly overspin the compressor/turbine wheel 💥💥💥

Great review Tim! GW has been doing some really good things lately. I have been slowly integrating. I like their 120 tooth ratchets. I would really like to see a review on ratchet crimp tools with changeable dies.

Masterforce from Menards has a torque screwdriver and I am game to get and try out one to see if it works great.

I was kind of interested since I work in the electrical field and really ought to have one, but at $180 I think I'll have to pass on this. I think a Husky one costs $60, so if I ever need one of my own that is probably what I'll get.

I don't do too many electrical things, mainly trailer plugs when i have to, typically from corrosion, being just broken, or someone pulled the cord out of the plug. Typically the latter. So when i do a new plug i will crank down on those screws for the wires pretty hard, so that when someone does inevitably yank on the cord to unplug it, it should stay together.

firearm optic mounts would most benefit the use of a torque driver like this

Has anyone ever tested the torque level of the numeric clutch on a drill driver? That would be good to know. Keep up the good work.

6:11 I always say that if you are asking that question, you don't need it. If you are an auto mechanic, electrician or an engineer then it is helpful to have this tool.
    Great review!
