The North Spore Mushroom Factory tour and Shiitake log inoculation demo is up on the Epic Gardening Channel: th-cam.com/video/51FoFWfx2BI/w-d-xo.html Part 2 of my Maine adventures will be up this Sunday on my channel!
I adore your outreach to other states and growing conditions! As a Mainer, I'm so happy that you got to experience Maine, and the lovely people. The winters aren't so bad, people help their neighbors. We'd get you through it!
I think we need more of this! From Jacque to Eric.. er, I mean Kevin 👀. Y’all’s trip to see Laura from Garden Answer was so awesome! I LOVE seeing the trips y’all take!😊🖤
Wild Maine blueberries are the best! I love that you vlogged on this and hope you can do more! I’m partial to New England myself but I love to see your perspectives!
Hi Jacques, we love your channel and so happy to see you were in Maine! My family moved to Maine from FL in August. I think you need to move to Maine so we can use your expert advice in our new garden this Spring! 😊
Jacques… this is like my favorite video ever on YT!! 🥰🥹 You have been so inspiring to me on my gardening journey. I am a lifelong and proud “Mainer” and also have been attending the Common Ground Fair almost ever year since a child. It’s a very special event for sure!! 💚 I am so so happy you had such a great time visiting and just know.. you are ALWAYS welcome here!! FYI.. the winters are really not that bad anymore..
I understand why Mainers are so proud to be Mainers! Everyone caring and being present for each other was very apparent. Also....You might be on to something with the winters not being as bad as they once were as sad as that is
yes, Jacques, you do seem to have the Maine vibe down pat -- so maybe you'll be moving there eventually! Thanks for sharing all the great finds and for giving good shout-outs on their trash handling and the drinking water solution. Love the owl and chicken designs on the merch.
We moved up to Maine zone 5A from Massachusetts zone 6B this summer The new school I teach t goes to the Common Ground Fair as a field trip and our lunch ladies serve local grown meats and produce. The fair is very kid friendly!
Wow, I just got back to Maine after a couple years away and missed MOFGA fest again. I love that you thought it was so special. As a girl from coastal south Texas, I think you could handle living here...just stay closer to the coast. Thanks for sharing.
The winters are cold here but the spring, summer and fall make it worth it! Plus, there is nothing like curling up by the wood stove when it is negative numbers outside.
Love this! So fun seeing you in my neck of the woods! Welcome to New England! I've been watching you and Kevin (Eric, lol) for years, but as a Massachusetts gardener, this is the first time I've seen you exploring what New England has to offer! hopefully we'll see more of you here in the future!
I hope more people are compelled to visit the Common Ground Fair. It is an amazing thing. Thank you for shinning a light on a very over looked event. Cheers
That's no ordinary "fieldtrip", San Diego to Unity Maine? That's an "EPIC FIELDTRIP!" You were literally on the doorstep of Johnny's Seeds and Four Seasons Farm, run by Eliot Coleman. Pioneer in the field of market gardening organically. IIRC, the original premise was to grow veg needed in restaurants and produce departments, year-round, instead of having to import them in from warmer climates/countries. Fresh veg, in Maine, in the Winter months!!! Then take a ride up to Wood Prairie Farm for your spuds and seed needs. Oh, and our house, should you ever need a place to lay your head down. 😴 (Or you feel the need to experience the fine art of moving Winter precipitation around by hand.) 😲 lol
I could easily spend a week just visiting Four Seasons Farms, Wood Prairie, Acadia National Park, Vermont Compost Company (nearby), Johnny's, and Fedco! Next time I will try to squeeze in some extra time!
Yay! I grew up going to that fair, and it's so cool to see how much it's grown. I moved from Maine to California, and have been eating up your Cali content. I LOVED seeing you so happy and excited in my old stomping grounds! Thanks for the Maine representation!
Amazing video! You inspire all the viewers. Your true enthusiasm is what I love to watch. I have a north facing piece of ground next to house I have been looking at for mushroom growing and already saw your first video on mushroom growing. Ready for next video in Maine about mushrooms. If it wasn’t for your videos I would be slacking on the weekends 😂.
Thanks so much for sharing, that is a Barn Owl, we have them here in Santa Cruz and we have two wonderful apple trees. This is such an inspiring video!
If you like that birch syrup you should try mugolio or pine cone syrup, great sub for maple syrup, if you have access to pine or any conifer tree and lack maple trees. Easy to make and delish!
@jacquesinthegarden it is really good. It is basically marinating green pinecone in equal parts brown sugar and granulated sugar. It is really a fermentation process. Put green pinecone in a jar, fill rest of jar with sugar. Amount will vary on size of jar or amount of pinecone just make sure they are covered. Let sit for at least 1 month. I let mine set for 1 year for a more complex flavor. When ready to use put entire jar in a pot on the stove. Heat on low heat to melt the sugar that has hardened at the top and make sure to use low heat so you don't destroy the vit c. It is high in vit. C. It used to be used as an elixir to help woth coughs etc. Also next tip. Use a wide mouth jar or one of those crocks meant for fermenting. Makes it easier to get the hardened sugar out. After sugar has melted strain and use. I love it on pancakes. 😋😋😋
What a fun fair! I'll have to remember that if I'm up in Maine. I love that there is an entire fiber arts tent. As a spinner I love it when the spinning wheels get some love like that!
I LOVE MOFGA and the Common Ground Fair. I used to live in Maine and miss it so much. This makes me want to go back just for the fair! The owl is a Barred Owl. The T-shirt design each year is always highly anticipated, and not surprised they are collector’s items now. Mine are all worn out!
Jacques, I swear the Maine winters are not that bad (*coughcough*climate change is real*coughcough*). Maine is great! I'm glad you enjoyed Common Ground. It's always a highlight for me!! The owl in this year's design is a Barred Owl, and yes, they are very common in Maine :)
You are the third one to mention the winters being not that bad anymore! I really loved it up there and the people were all great too! Hopefully next year I can go up there and do some birding, I'd love the chance to see a Barred Owl
Maine in the inland mid coast region, like where the MOFGA Fair is located, has the same temperatures as in Delaware in 1980. No more brutal winters with heavy snow. I moved from Orange County California to Delaware in 1982 and the real problem now is that the summers are brutally hot and humid. Winter is a relief, cold but the ground no longer freezes.
What a fun time!! Thank you for bringing us along! You will have to visit the Baker Creek Fair in Missouri in May (I think) I would definitely come to meet you there!!
Wow! Your in Maine! Welcome to the East Coast! I don't know why I'm so excited about that. Maine is at least 8 hours away from me. So you're not exactly in my backyard LOL. 😅😅
IF you DO move east coast (Maine, NH, Mass, etc), remember, it's a short drive away to see Niagara. AMAZING geology, there, too. We have such cool features, from glacial moraines (the entire land of Cape Cod!), to the huge granite formations in Niagara, to the White Mountains and the Kettle Ponds of New England, all worth a drive, once you get the East Coast garden setup!
I REALLY wish I had an extra day or two for driving around and just looking at things. Next time I am for sure going to Acadia national park that is for sure!

I met you that day! That was the highlight of my day and I am so glad you enjoyed our incredible fair!!
It was awesome to be there and I am happy we ran into each other!
As a Mainer myself, I am proud you came here!
I felt very welcomed and truly love what you guys have built over there!
Jacques, thanks for showing the trash/recycle system. I think that is so important to do right whenever there's a event like that.
I have never seen anyone try that hard to be mindful about waste and I am coming from California!
Jacques! You should do something like this in each state!
I could happily do this all year and not get bored haha!
Love this kind of content from you Jacques! It's so nice to see you get excited and passionate about things you enjoy. More Jacques in the wild 😄
