No it's absolutely not lmao burger king is arguably the second most l own fast food place in the nation besides McDonald's in and out isn't national in the slightest @@JDubST
26:51 I worked at my local DQ when I was in high school and we cleaned the fryer every night by using one of those machines for filtering the oil and we would add more oil as needed. When they came out of the fryer we would salt them and most importantly, once the fries in the warmer had been in there after about 10 minutes without being served we would just put them in a couple large fry containers for the employees to snack on if we wanted.
I appreciate how thorough and long this was. honestly. There are so many other youtubers who say "Testing ALL of the X" and then they end up going to like 4-5 places plus a 2 minute sponsor segment. The end.
I appreciate them tasting them right when they get them. Too many reviewers will first spend 40 minutes driving around to get all the food first and then rate them back at their house. How are you going to judge fast food that's been sitting around that whole time?
Jack in the Box curly fries are fucking bomb right out of the fryer. There’s one semi-near my house that’s the only place open late night and the stoners that work there are always on point. On the rare occasion I break my diet after a crazy workout I will drive to Jack in the Box and get a large curly fry. It’s like, one of the most blissful forms of carbs to me.
I know people say don’t trust a skinny chef but dude you look better, just healthier, seriously congratulations on the successful diet/workout plan, and thank you for all of the cooking videos, definitely improved my cooking abilities
"Don't trust a skinny chef" is something only Boomers would say because they're old enough to remember Depression era parents who actually got thin from starvation. That advice is moronic today. If anything, be suspicious of fat chefs. Big portion sizes and covering everything in oil isn't good for you. If anything, skinny chefs are people who care about food. Today, it's buff chefs. Cooking is a tough job. People who care about their profession are lifting weights and getting health. The next generation of cooks will be the most swole in history.

I’m glad someone else gives Freddy’s fries the love they deserve. They’ve been one of my favorite fries since I went there the first time. Some people don’t like them because they say they’re too thin but I like the crunch of them
I was actually shouting "hell yes!" when you loved the DQ french fries. I grew up in a small town in WI and DQ's were everywhere along our little lonely highways and I just loved their fries. Not too thick, not too thin, perfectly crunchy and fluffy inside. Still my all time favorite fry.
@@davidkelln9225 yeah I guess you can say that with most places though…because when he put Arby’s fries that low I was like WHAT? I at least thought some of the lower ones would be higher but maybe he got a bad location.
Ah, the legendary fast food french fry. As I am 70, I was blessed to have been around when the amazing McDonald's fries cooked in beef tallow existed, and sadly ended in 1990 when it was considered too high in cholesterol and replaced with vegetable oil. I am positive that you would have, hands down, chosen those fries over all the others because they were the total package, flavor, crunch, texture, amazingly great. Have not had a better fry since then. RIP beef tallow.
Yeah my grandma and grandpa both still complain about it too. Working at McD's is where the met. When ever they talk about how they got together, they always bring up the fries.
Exactly. I was about to say the same thing. McDonald's fries now aren't even close to what they used to be. I thought it was insane that Joshua used vegetable oil when he made the video about trying to make the perfect fries. So many better options
I used to work at Five Guys and I have to say, their fries are fantastic if they are cooked exactly how you want them, the standard was always 'firm exterior and perfect mashed potato interior' but I always cooked them crispy and they were actually so amazing.
I’ve never had fries that were less than spectacular at Five Guys. OTOH, most of the time I’ve had fries at KFC they’ve been just a tad over “OK”. Can’t say I agree with this vid 🤔
I've been to Five Guys a few times now in the EU and UK and always found the fries very tasty. Certainly not the crispiest, but the taste makes up for that. For me, one of the best fries in the fast food game.
Yeah, my experience is that you normally get some fries in your order that are a little soggy but also some that are extra crispy. Honestly, I kinda like the texture variation but I could see somebody eating a couple soggy fries and writing off the whole batch.
Two separate comments. 1. It's not a permanent menu item, but you have got to try Taco Bell's Nacho Fries when they are in rotation. They are surprisingly super good, and you dip them in nacho cheese instead of ketchup. 2. While not a national brand and not fast food, anyone who can should visit Chickie's and Pete's and have thier crab fries. They are crinkle-cut with an old bay like seasoning. Also, like the Taco Bell fries, these ones are served with warm cheese sauce that's amazing.
I loved your reaction to DQ's fries! My local Dairy Queen just closed down and there's no other locations for miles and miles so I miss those dang fries so much! I've always said that DQ is one of the most underrated fast food places; their savory food is actually really good for a place that mostly is known for ice cream.
They were only ice cream at first but then they started making the Brazier restaurants which had burgers and stuff. Eventually it all got combined under just the DQ logo. Every once in a while I'll be driving and have to stop in a small town for gas and the only things around are McDonalds and a DQ so I go to DQ and realize all over again they actually have decent food. Not great food, but definitely underrated and better than a typical McDs.
I know it's not a nationwide chain and I doubt they have 300 restaurants, but Bon Chon, the Korean fried chicken chain, served me some of the best fast food fries I've ever had in my life.
Just like Jollibee -- they have that many internationally but are in very few places in the US - but not focusing so much on one region. Jollibee is also going for wide, they are in like 14 states with 60 locations. (based to some extent where there are strong filipino populations)
Wendy’s seems to be the most inconsistent fast food restaurant when it comes to french fries. I’ve had some absolute bangers one day, went back the next day at the same location to experience disappointing garbage.
Wendy's new fries that they rolled out in like 2020 or 2021 are some chemically altered crap that doesn't even taste like potatoes anymore. Absolutely worst fries in the U.S.A.
I'm so happy they rated KFC's fry highly! Everyone I know disses them, but I really do like them best. They always have the right amount of salt and I love love the seasoning on them. Feeling validated rn :)
the irony of his statement was so clear, obviously not in a malicious way, he just included many regional restaurants that he assumed were more widespread
He said they have to have over 300 locations as well. As of March, 2024, there are 417 In-N-Out Burger restaurants in the United States. These restaurants are located in 7 states and territories and 275 cities.
For real, I kinda felt like I was the only one that was getting a little tired of these 30 minute review style vids. I miss the cooking and single recipes!
Salt is definitely the key for a great tasting fry. It has to be applied to the immediately after it hits the fry bin, the high temperature of the fries will fuse the salt to it locking the salt to the fry. A restaurant that doesn't have a large number of locations (60+) that imo has the best waffle fries is PDQ and there chicken tenders are of the chart.
YES!!! The key is asking for extra crispy ESPECIALLY at in n out. Well done n you get some that are literally potatoe chips it’s great. And they give you salt packets if they don’t put enough
In my city DQ has shoestring or matchstick fries and sonic has mini crinkle cut fries they're both way beyond the competition imo and I'm disappointed not to see them in this vid lol
When I worked at Arby's 1990 to 1992, for my own meals on a long Saturday I got a giant roast beef with extra meat, a cherry turnover that I murdered with frosting, a jamocha shake with extra jamocha flavoring (if you held the lever at just the right position you could emphasize the flavoring to milk ratio), and fries that I cooked an extra 2 minutes or so. The fries were excellent. The above may sound like a ridiculous meal but this was me working noon to close in the largest Arby's in Texas (Northeast Mall in North Richland Hills) and I NEEDED those calories just to not lose weight from my already thin frame. We had curly fries at the time but I never got on with those. Too much seasoning and "tartness" for me and I never thought they cooked as well as our normal fries.
That was the mall I hung out at as a teenager in the early 90s! I have good memories of sitting in the Arby's with friends, daring each other to dip jelly beans we bought at Gumballs into Horsey Sauce.
Did some googling. A lot of these are in more states than you'd expect. Definition for national chain is all over the place though. The official definition claims you have to operate across the entire nation with a distribution center for them all. Another claims just 3 states. Technically this definition makes Big Boy a national chain despite being specifically region locked.
You guys should say your ratings at the same time, so that the other person isn’t swayed to rate it close to who went first, since most ratings were within a few points ♥️♥️
The Culver's hack is to order a Family Size, and ask for well done and extra salt. Wendy's always needs a shit ton of salt added. The way to eat Steak and Shake Fries is on a plate smothered in extra, extra cheese sauce.
Culver's is the same as In n Out... and a few other places. You CAN ask for it well done, and they are better. But they don't serve them that way normally.
the thing I've noticed about BK fries: you either get ones with literally 0 salt, or oens with like the PERFECT amount of salt. no in between and it's completely random when they have the salt, they taste REALLY good imo.
@@cinema_yo *Shrugs* different folks have different opinions. You have your opinion about BK and I have mine. I don't need new taste buds, mine just are different than yours.
I've been to Five Guys a few times now in the EU and UK and always found the fries very tasty. Certainly not the crispiest, but the taste makes up for that. For me, one of the best fries in the fast food game.
One thing that I noticed was vastly different when I had five guys in the UK/Germany was that the bag they put the fries in had little vents in the packaging that didn’t allow it to get soggy. In America, we just throw them in a cup and I wish they did the same thing here with their fries bc those were the best fries I ever had when I was over there!
This video is absolutely affected by the small sample size of their fries. There’s no way a Five Guys fry or a Chick-fil-a fry loses to Dairy Queen or Sonic unless the particular examples they got were outside the norm. 9 times out of 10 (or more), Five Guys would win that match.
100% agree with the verdict. I remember really liking the winner's chicken waaaay back when I was in high school, but thinking "if they only had better fries, this would be the best fast food chain". Back then their fries were small, wispy and soggy. And then one year they changed the recipe, suddenly making the best fries in the business and sweeping the first spot on my favorite's list.
Before watching, I just wanna mention that with McDonald's, if your location often has cold or just fries that have been sitting, order them with no salt, and get salt packets. They have to make them fresh because all the ones they have prepared are salted
The only issue as you mentioned is inconsistency I have a Wendy’s By my work that gives me fries that are 7.9-8.4 level fries and I love a McDonald’s fry done right but theirs are usually mid as hell (across from Wendy’s) so it depends on the staff, and management too
The whole time I'm shouting 'PLEASE TRY KFC FRIES' 😂 I have loved them for so long. Super crunchy and salty. My test is that if they sit and get room temperature , are they still wonderful. And these are! Great video!
KFC fries are actually still pretty solid once they cool.off. not a whole lot of fries that can say that. Taco Bell Nacho fries are kind of in the same boat, since the flavor is so good the crunch or lack thereof can be overlooked
Yup, kfc and Taco bell both have fantastic flavorful fries that are just underrated. He skipped on Taco bell's nacho fries and I feel it was a grave injustice.
Most of these are regional, which is against his rules. If they have no locations either East or West of the Mississippi River, then it probably not a national chain.
@@TheBaldr Pretty much only 2 are questionable, the rest are pretty much in every state. Wienerschinitzel and jollibees arent but are atill nationwide they just miss a state here or there.
As someone from Wisconsin, Culver’s fries are always mid however if you get their onion rings 🔥🔥🔥 Always crispy and always well seasoned highly recommend.
@@mwheel4Culver’s Cheese Curds are terrible compared to any Wisconsin bar. I laugh at people not from WI that love them. They don’t come close to bar curds
I think the quality of a fry is so variable. Are they fresh out of the fryer? How old is the oil? Who was working the fry station, and adding the salt? I've had amazing fries at McDonalds, and terrible ones as well.
Getting a good fry at McDonald's is an anomaly. Every time I've had them in memory, half the fries were hard and almost inedible. Good to see Carl's up so high, I love their fries, both versions.
@christiannakamura1187 they just opened a location in the NE but they've been out there in the converse area. Don't bother with their fries tho, I didn't like them either.
KFC chips in Australia pack the secret sauce of chicken salt, not as much as kebab shops or charcoal chicken places but enough to elevate them above all drive-thru options. Every decent takeaway chip shop in Aus has chicken salt as an option or default depending on area / location. Kebab shops often give you the most 'flavor' per bite with an unhealthy amount of bright yellow chicken salt on a serve of chips that you have ever seen. Equally legendary and unhealthy For the uninitiated chicken salt is basically concentrated chicken stock powder mixed with MSG.
Wow, I am truly amazed by how much difference there is between the French Fries you got in the States vs the ones we get offered here in Germany. Like the KFC ones over here are totally different and are among the worst I've ever had while the Five Guys French Fries are among the best available in Germany (at least from fast food restaurants). Love the video, had so much fun watching this. Thanks Josh :)
They're on my "never eat there again" list because I went there a few times and they messed up my order every single time. Their burgers were unexceptional too. Culver's wasn't worth the hassle at all.
@@michigangeezer3950 The only place that earned that moniker for me is Burger King. Ate their twice over the years and got sick to my stomach within 30 minutes each time. One of my favourite things about Jollibee fries is that if you leave it for a night, unlike other fries that dry out, it's still good. It's got a very different texture so even old Jollibee fries stay firm and delicious even if they're no longer crispy. I used to think all fries were like that and I got burned by the awful dry overnight fries I had in the future.
These videos bring me back to my line cook days in High School at my local Hardee's (also Carl's Jr.) The Carl's Jr. waffle fries were my ALL TIME favorite, especially with the House dressing as a dipping sauce

Quick PSA on White Castle, it's a special thing, should not be quantified against other fast food items. It's more greasy diner than fast food. As such, most appropriate with a few drinks in the system.

One issue he couldn't test here is consistency. This is a really where McDs wins. I've driven all around the nation for over a decade and I grab fast food a few times each trip. McDs is insanely consistent compared to other chains. You can order in alaska or florida and get the same thing. BK is also consistent....ly terrible They have fallen far. Wendy's is one of the least consistent. I've had some of the best fries and burgers at wendys and some of the worst. Even Shake Shack, one of my favorite chains, isn't consistent on their seasoning.

It was good that you remind viewers that "you're not always going to get a fry like this". Consistency is key, and a lot of these restaurants will let you down if you just pull up and order fries. Bojangles is my favorite!

You can eat all this shit and be skinny its just about not overconsuming
"Don't trust a skinny chef" is something only Boomers would say because they're old enough to remember Depression era parents who actually got thin from starvation. That advice is moronic today. If anything, be suspicious of fat chefs. Big portion sizes and covering everything in oil isn't good for you. If anything, skinny chefs are people who care about food. Today, it's buff chefs. Cooking is a tough job. People who care about their profession are lifting weights and getting health. The next generation of cooks will be the most swole in history.

I was born that year. 🤬

I’ve never had fries that were less than spectacular at Five Guys. OTOH, most of the time I’ve had fries at KFC they’ve been just a tad over “OK”. Can’t say I agree with this vid 🤔

Nope. Fries supreme only. Best fries there is.

I loved your reaction to DQ's fries! My local Dairy Queen just closed down and there's no other locations for miles and miles so I miss those dang fries so much! I've always said that DQ is one of the most underrated fast food places; their savory food is actually really good for a place that mostly is known for ice cream.
I rarely eat lunch there (I'm usually a dessert person when I want DQ) but damn if their chicken isn't fantastic.

They turned our pdq into an Outback Steakhouse before I got to go there
Still mad about that

Did some googling. A lot of these are in more states than you'd expect.

Another claims just 3 states. Technically this definition makes Big Boy a national chain despite being specifically region locked.

The Culver's hack is to order a Family Size, and ask for well done and extra salt. Wendy's always needs a shit ton of salt added. The way to eat Steak and Shake Fries is on a plate smothered in extra, extra cheese sauce.
This!!! Steak and Shake fries are mean to be eaten inside on a plate dowsed in sauce and eaten with a fork
Culver's is the same as In n Out... and a few other places. You CAN ask for it well done, and they are better. But they don't serve them that way normally.
Steak and Shake also sometimes has a thing of fry seasoning on their tables. Adding that makes them pretty tasty.

Equally legendary and unhealthy
For the uninitiated chicken salt is basically concentrated chicken stock powder mixed with MSG.

@@shubham3883 yeah you are right, i just checked, KFC has over 800 outlets compared to McD's 500, but I was surprised 😮when I first saw them using frozen ones
@@KaitouKaiju Unfortunately, beef is prohibited in fast food restaurants of India because of the cultural and religious aspect.
So much depends on the franchise. Each one is unique for quality.
After the Popeyes rating, I knew I couldn't take anything they said seriously. Absolutely CRAZY
We love Christian and Josh!
This might be the best tier list I've seen. I'd personally put Popeyes at 10 and KFC at 3, but I really can't complain about the whole thing, especially the top 8. Fantastic job by the guys
The five guys rating kind of discredits the list
joshua wanting to franchise jollibeeee says something how mich he loves it
FINALLY someone knows what's good, KFC fries are insane when made fresh and that's why people loved Taco Bells so much, they use the same fries.
Nacho Fries! 🤤 and no, they are not the same fries. KFC uses their week-old oil for their fries (even if sharing the same raw product), they suck over here in San Diego.
@@djoscartj I'm in Canada so maybe it's different but KFC/TacoBell have had fries here for 20+ years, both owned by same company and they taste the same.
Remember the KFC potato wedges???
@@anthony-vd8hm Oh, I'm well aware of the extinct KenTacoHut franchises in California (KFC + Taco Bell + Pizza Hut), now there's just a few KFC + Taco Bells
@@kmack764 They still got them as far as I know
