    I've always had my eye on this set, even before it became DCC I believe there was another set similar years ago, my only gripe and it is minimal is when I see the title "Mixed Goods" I expect to see at least 1 passenger coach to be a true Mixed Goods set. Great review, if funds were better I'd get it.

    As always loved the review, does seem like an ideal set to introduce beginners to DCC even though it's not high on detail, but to be fair that's not a bad thing as it's something that is durable enough that wouldn't mind the rough handling of a newbie.

    Hi Sam, I bought this set a few weeks ago based on your review and had exactly the same experience as you, namely the Pannier was a bit of a lemon OOTB. After running in there was some improvement but it still stalls like crazy over Peco Insulfrog points, it also emits a very high-pitched whine! The 08 is better but again stalls at slow speeds. It could be that DCC seems to need all parts of the track to be live (from what I've read on the forums, etc). For locos with supposedly the same mechanism the 08 runs faster than the Pannier, on tests while running in the 08 caught up (and coupled!) to the Pannier. Having said all that, couldn't agree more that this is simply SOOO much fun to play with!!!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry to hear that Steve - yes the stalling on points is the only thing I could complain about - take a look at my video on servicing the Hornby Thomas - you can remove the wheels and adjust the pickups!

    Hi Sam, yes tippler is the correct name for that type of wagon. If you look at the tippler wagon, you will see that it doesn't have any doors for unloading. They are run into a "Tippler" machine, which locks them to the track, so that they don't come off whilst they are rotated up-side-down, on the longitudinal plane, to dump the contents out, then back upright so they may be taken away empty. DCC really comes into its own with sound systems in the locos. My "0" gauge layout is DCC controlled with two pannier tanks, one with an auto coach, an "08" and an "AC Railbus," all sound fitted. I can have the two panniers simmering away, with the auto coach lights on and passengers chattering away, the 08 ticking over in a siding whilst the railbus is arriving at, or leaving the station, or many other combinations. Another good video. Regards, Alan.

I've fitted a TCS DCC Decoder on a basic Bachmann Diesel, and it will CRAWL at sleeper counting speed for days!! 😎😁
    Running multiple Locos is only one advantage. I've been a happy DCC convert since 2009. 😉

    I find it cool that this train set includes 2 locomotives rather than just 1, we don't see that very often! The price seems pretty reasonable in terms of what you get inside the box, £200 is quite a lot of money to spend, but something like this is definitely worth the money! Hi Sam. I really love your channel. I thought I would point out that the Hornby railroad 08 is in fact a different moulding from the Triang one. In the 1950s there were many similar shunting engines in service and Triang used the plans from a slightly different design loco then numbered it as an 08. This one is recognisable as it has moulded ladders, the exhaust is centred and the cab is taller than the body with a screw at the back. The Hornby railroad mould dates from 1976 and was originally R156 -it is based on the actual class 08 drawings. When first made it had separate ladders and a counterweighted rear coupling. Hornby changed the chassis and stopped fitting ladders from 1985 which is basically the model as it is now.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Stephen - yes you're absolutely right - I compared it with my Tri-ang ones and found that after I'd filmed this! Many thanks for the info! :D

      Sam :)

    • @TRTX-em8kl
      @TRTX-em8kl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have realised this morning that my info was slightly incorrect. There were 2 Hornby 08s with the later chassis that still had ladders - a Railfreight one with Scotty dog logo and a blue one with red wheels in sets only. After that they stopped having ladders. In the 1990s you couldn't get a decent 08 model, the most common loco on BR. The Lima 09 had the chassis detail but was unreliable - I found the plastic wheels slipped on the metal axles when I cleaned them then the gear wheel fell out! My solution was to paint and detail an old Wrenn 08 which had a diecast chassis.

    The stalling is almost certainly nothing to do with the pickups. The biggest problem with DCC is that if you have even the tiniest, tiniest interruption of the power supply to the decoder, the decoder shuts down and reboots. This is what you are seeing because the loco stops and then gets going again after the reboot without needing a push. A DC loco will not even notice such a quick interruption because the inertia of its moving parts is enough to keep it going until power is restored. In my experience, DCC 0-6-0 locos need suspension to reliably maintain wheel contact to the track if you are using points with dead frogs. More wheels with pickups are needed for complete reliability, but this is not possible with an 0-6-0, although it is the reason that Hornby's tender locos generally run much better on DCC than Bachmann's because Hornby usually include tender pickups and Bachmann don't. My grandchildren have a couple of DCC locos with this chassis and the solution was to fit DCC Concepts decoders and then add a stay-alive capacitor (which I believe the Hornby decoder can't work with). This obviously adds to the cost, but the result is literally flawless running - that Railroad chassis is actually pretty good in my experience.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is to do with the pickups - I have other models (with smaller wheelbases) that manage on those points just fine - with some adjustment, I had these working perfectly! :D

    I purchased I very similar set a few years back with a br green 08 and a br 3f, they are pretty good value. I don't use the locos too often as for me they sometimes cut out - especially over the points. I also ended upgrading to the NCE Powercab for better use with my sound locos. At the end of the day it got me in to DCC which is what I wanted 😀👍

    Hmm. With a name like, “Mixed Traffic”, I kind of expected it to have two wagons (or one wagon and one brake van), and two coaches. This way, you could run passenger and freight trains. I really like that they threw in a turnout (switch); so many train sets don’t have one! This deserves an extra gold star ⭐️! 😊

    Hornby train wheel flanges catch on the Peco track "check rail" , that little piece of plastic rail on the inside of track, before a turnout. This causes the Loco to hesitate, stop or make a wagon jump the track! . My solution is to file back both ends of "check rail", into a point , which will pull the wheel flange into the rail and through the turnout. They look the same, but there is a difference between a Peco turnout and the Hornby turnout.... I notice all Hornby trains are designed to run well on Hornby track and turnouts... Thanks for your informative reviews.

      @@SamsTrains Sam, using a wheel gauge U will see that Horny wheels are set about 0.5mm short on the axle compared with Bachmann wheels which means they run "sloppy" over Peco track and Points ! Therefore being shorter on the axle they can catch on the Peco "check Rail" ! Sometimes I just push the wheels out to the correct setting for my Peco trackwork, otherwise I just live with it and do adjustments as the need occurs....AMAZING HOW A 0.5MM GAP CAN CAUSE SO MUCH TROUBLE ON OUR MODEL TRAIN SETUPS!

    Hi Sam,
    I cannot believe how the prices have risen on train sets in the 2 years since I started mine with a Majestic Train set in which I got an A1 loco and class 47 (all be it railroad ones as you would expect) 2 circuits of track with 3 points a trackmat ( midi) the siding track + eLink and the Railmaster software 3 carrages and 4 goods and of course the buffer stop all for £250 (list £299) from Hattons yes I know I need a computer but you need one anyway if you want to do YT videos I then added later a Tornado train set from Argos for £99 so I started mine off with a lot of stuff for not a lot of money compared to what I spend on the better detail stuff now but it was interesting to see this so well done and hope it will persuade some viewers into "Model Railways"which is what we all want and the younger the better. Keep safe and well.

As my layout with several steam locos, HSTs and Blue Pullman trains is now quite vast, I don't think that I could now convert to DCC, despite all the advantages it has over DC. Hello Sam, I very recently purchased this set as a complete beginner to modelling. I found the 08 to be a very much better runner over the tank which has proved to be a poor performer. Jerky running over the Sam track where the 09 runs smoothly. The tank runs much better on d.c. (I have a switchable power supply which provides voltages in 2.5 volt steps). So I’m learning quickly about how to achieve smooth running locos on dcc. Presume it will be easier to achieve with bigger locos with more pick up points.

    I bought one of these sets back in december as a Christmas gift for myself, and I modified the cab of the pannier to make it look like a regular 57xx (I cant find a Bachmann Branchline or mainline version for a decent price) I then printed out new number plates (5741) and gave it a face (Used and broken Bachmann Duck, with the eyes glued in and filed down on the back) (half the cab was gone, 2 of the 6 wheels were missing and the Funnel was broken 2/3rd's of the way down. I think its a mericle that the face and eye mechanism stayed intact.) The end result was a custom RWS Duck model (I made the face removable with stickey tack, to stick with the theme of my engines not having faces, as if they were real locomotives made into models) I unfortunately had to decode the model ,(which took much longer then I was hoping) because, I'm a traditional analouge kind-of guy when it comes to Model railways, but it runs great and im looking for a Bachmann Pannier chassis to replace the old chassis that is aready on the model. Other then that, Duck is done for the time being.

    Why do some locomotives, like the ones in the video, have these metal rods on their wheels, but no piston to push them?
    How does the steam locomotive propel forwards, and why does a diesel one need them in the first place? (I'm referring to the real-life ones.)
    I mean that metal rod that connects the three wheels together on each side. (I don't know thy are called, sorry.)

    • @highbrookendmodelrailway
      @highbrookendmodelrailway 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The rods on the sides of locomotives are called coupling rods or connecting rods (con rods for short).
      The Pannier Tank Engine has internal cylinders and valve gear, so the pistons, cylinders, valve gear and the like are inside the locomotive (on this example they are between the wheels and just behind the smokebox). However, the output from the piston only powers 1 axle of the steam loco, so because of all the other gubbins that are inside the loco, they put the coupling rods on the outside. This is why you see coupling rods and cylinders outside on some steamers, but only coupling rods on others. Basically the power is provided to one axle by pistons inside the loco, and the coupling rods on the outside transfer the power to the other 4 wheels.
      With that particular diesel (the 08) only one axle is driven, like the Pannier Tank, so, it also uses coupling rods on the outside to transmit the power to the other wheels. Not all diesels have couplings rods, most use internal transmission systems to provide power to whatever wheels need power in the configuration for the specific diesel loco.
      Hope this helps :D

    I liked the intro because the diesel was moving in reverse with cargo wagons and the steam train in the forward motion (video idea for you sam: make a train with rail cars attached to the engine and then choose any engine you like and attach it to the rail cars and then TaKe another train but without the rail cars and then make the other locomotive move on ItS own and do a video where you try to stop a runaway train!
    Sorry for the length of the text sorry

    Cool set,wish i had something like that when i was a lad! Ive not long returned to modeling after 20year hiatus and DCC is just the stuff of dreams! I impulse purchased a used brass loco fitted with DCC and got a controller and was instantly convinced! As a youngster i ALWAYS craved more realistic control and being i was lucky enough to have driven real trains before i even started school i knew what they should handle like! Shame encoders are thin on the ground now though,i just got a new loco and couldn't get an encoder.For me starting from scratch DCC is a no brainer but id hate to have a large collection and have to fit the lot,OUCH! So it isn't for everyone.

      Yeah me too - I would've loved this as a kid too! Yeah me too - that's why most of my locos are still DC!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    A great introduction to DCC. Well done Hornby. The 08 would look much better in a more 'subdued' livery though. Many thanks Sam, enjoyed that.

      Thanks very much Mike! Yes I agree - maybe it was designed to appeal to kids, with the bright colours??

    great review ! and such GREAT VALUE ! - you explained DCC so well for those unfamiliar - this is an ideal train set for a dad (or mum ! of course - mums buy train sets as well as dads :) )
    to buy his/her children for xmas -
    its every parents duty to introduce their children to DCC (its actually more important than sending them to school) - I discharged my duty to my son and daughter about 10 years ago - and
    did I spot a "Sam's cheat" at 27:15 ? :)

    I bought the sister set to this one, with a Jinty instead of the Pannier, and its great. I had already bought the Mallard Pullman set as my first set, and DCC just seemed way better than DC so I was looking at pricing. The cost to buy just the select controller, and the decoder for my Mallard was only a small amount less than this set, in which I got two more locos, 4 wagons, and the whole extra track as well. It was a no brainer to me.

      Ahh yeah I've seen those - they are great, brilliant addition to the Mallard set too! :D

    Hi Sam you have mass produced these vids please keep it up!
    I'd also like to ask if you could do a guide on how to solder because I am going to build (hopefully very soon!) An O gauge Garden Railway and I'm going to need to solder quite a few things so if you could do a guide that be great!

    Those old 08s are hilariously dire, they look almost nothing like the real thing.

    Hey Sam. Are Hornby trying to replace all of the fome stuff that they used for lots of packages? Because of the super detail stuff is the block of ice. And that was egg cartons.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They seem to be, at least with more basic models! Luckily I've not seen this with anything super-detailed!

    Interesting set. Two locomotives. Perhaps not what I would personally choose & I would like to see Hornby do options as to which of the running companies to have on the side of the locomotives. Many of us would choose whichever served our location. And therefore I would have gone LNER (or LMS at a push). I personally wasn’t overly impressed with the wagons included, but they were okay. For the fuel tanker, I’d have preferred something less loony toons emblazoned down the side. It’s nice to see a reasonably priced DCC pack. Overall, if that appeared wrapped under a tree at Christmas I don’t think anyone would be disappointed. Even if certain items were changed and upgraded quite quickly, it would serve very nicely.
