I remember the website to this when Bachmann first came out with it in like 2008-2009, they had like seven characters all based on London Underground lines (Like the one in the Sherlock hat being called "Bakerloo") And thought it looked and sounded better than Thomas at the time. Boy was I wrong.
Edit: Also the character here is named "Circle" and she's supposed to be a hippie-dippy girl.

I remember looking at the Antics Online website at the time and seeing these alongside the Hornby Thomas range and I thought the Thomas range looked worlds better. And even back then there were things I didn't like about the Thomas range like the colored footplates and Thomas' unnecessary splasher.

Only just seen this video but I just pulled a large box of this out of my attic, my daughter loved Underground Ernie when she was 5 and I found loads of this going for almost nothing in TK-Max (A UK end of line bargain shop), we've got 4 tube trains and the out of scale maintenance car and nearly all the track for the track mat, a castle, two stations and other buildings. I put it all up there about 10 years ago. As I have an end to end layout I'm using this track to run my trains in as I can do it on the floor and the rest has been save for kit bashing if I ever get the time. The trains all still run really well and the Bachmann controller is always useful.
Oh I'm so excited to finally get my first model train set and when I get it I will follow all of your information!

Just seen this for the first time, and some of Sam's comments had me in stitches! The view of the "power car" from the side looked as if it was part of a USSR military parade, the nose-end resembling a tank! Says a lot of Gary Linker for doing the narration - enough said! Sam , do you have this locked away in the "rubbish cupboard", or was it resurrected as a present for a nephew/niece ! (Would you have the courage to do this I wonder!!)
I was a teenager when Underground Ernie came out, so I never watched it, but from what I heard about it from James A Williams, despite the cheap animation, it was a very well written show! You should give his video on the show a watch!

Perfect Christmas gift for your 2 year old! 😂 I watched underground Ernie when I was young and yes I had a nightmare of one of those trains. I dreamed that in the dead of night one of the trains came charging through the wall in front of me and took me to my doom!

@@SamsTrains Yeah, the railway is named International Underground, It's a pretty good show, even if the animation is quite dated.
3:52 EZ Track is the standard over here in the US, and most sets around the time this would have been made had the steel rails variant included. Today, Bachmann USA includes a different version with nickel steel rails. I guess they were made aware of the corrosion of the track included in the older sets and switched to the other variant.
Yes I've definitely seen a lot of it! I can't believe they didn't know steel would rust?! Everyone knows that! xD

You know Sam got me to dig out an old Bachman HO Thomas set I had when I was a kid and it had the Steel EZ track. Sure enough it won’t run. Super disappointing.

I actually like Underground Ernie when I was little. It even had its own magazine at one point and one issue had a free plastic train and track mat that I pestered my Mum to get me. You could either have the weird green character you have here (Circle) or my favourite character (Jubilee), but all the shops locally only had the Circle copy so we went everywhere looking for a Jubilee copy! We got one eventually and I believe I still have my plastic Jubilee kicking around at my Mum's house somewhere.

Hey Sam. Yeah I remember these things. It was a 2006 show which was meant to compete with Thomas and friends. When I was younger the Eastleigh Lakeside steam railway where I volunteered was a real big supporter of the show to a point where one of the electric locomotives had a custom body for Underground Ernie days and a Ernie costume. I had to wear the costume once and you had a big foam head and one day I fell asleep on the platform and scared the kids when I woke up. They though I was a dummy sitting there.

2:27 Apparently most of this huge list of additional items were never released. Within two years the series had been cancelled and majority of these items were for sale are ludicrously low prices to clear the stock - many of the standalone trains for example could be bought for as little as £5!
Buy the sets, just for the tracks. Bargain.

On the subject of the EZ-track, Bachmann does make a nickle-silver version of it and it looks pretty good. Gray colored roadbed, fine black ties, very large variety of pieces available... but getting the 2 rail joiners + the multiple joining features in the roadbed to line up right is a pain every time. Still, it works really well once it's together, especially for running on carpet.
Back when I first got into model trains, in the US the company Life-like (since defunct / acquired by Walthers, I think?) had their own line of roadbed track called "power-loc" which snapped together very solidly and skipped the joiners (fishplates) in favor of... well it looks like little copper contacts? I never had any but it looked like it would've gone together and stayed together a lot easier than anything else I've seen.
Another company, Atlas, makes track with an integrated roadbed called True-track. Again, I've never had any, but the roadbed alignment and locking features look kind of wimpy. However it has a pretty big benefit of using Atlas's more realistic code 83 track (with brown ties and nickle-silver rails), and you can actually take the track out of the roadbed (and put it back later) if you want to go from a temporary setup to something nailed down.

I watched this a s a child and ended up having this as my first train set but I got the batty version that they did and the train still went till last year and I did end up selling it to and that Is the last i saw of it and it brought back many happy memories thanks Sam for the video but I did not use it that much parrents said that it gave my nightmares 😂😂😂 so nice to see one aging I thought they had all gone

The power car is actually DCC ready and has scale wheels so will run on Code 75 track. It is a very popular starting point for modellers of O gauge narrow gauge O16.5 .

That's not a gigantic postman - that's Ernie, Controller of International Underground and titular character of said-series! The series was produced by Joella and was short-lived for one season with a total of just 26 episodes. The character was voiced by footballer Gary Lineker who also (currently) advertises Walkers' crisps.
Bachmann also produced their Bachmann Junior range with Harry the Hauler and some toy locos based on the Bachmann Thomas & Friends models. Speaking of Bachmann, that mounted track is similar to the US Bachmann track produced in their train sets.
The models, like the Bachmann Thomas models, have moving eyes which appeal to kids who like running and playing with toy and/or model trains. The likenesses are spot-on though the same can't often be said for the figures (much)! Kids just like to mix and match up everything just for fun provided that it's compatible only. Also, Bachmann US produced the Chuggington models though they focused only on two or three of the main characters for some reason. And yes, they have moving eyes, too!

Well done Sam, yes I bought this set cheaply too. I use the track for my garden films, cos the grass doesn't poke through the sleepers. : )
I bought more track pieces from Hatton's (not sure if they still stock it), but their track has nickel silver rails...?? Plus I found more EZ track, this time steel rails but black plastic ballast.
I believe the 9 inch straights and the 18 inch radius curves are more familiar to our friends in the USA. The controller feels well made too. : )

Ahh yes I do remember seeing your video(s) of this now - I had no idea what I was seeing at the time! I've been told that other EZ track was made with nickel-silver, but not sure why mine wasn't. Yes the controllers are well made I must say - they feel more robust than the Hornby equivalents!

The train character from Underground Ernie is called Circle (Named after the Circle Line in London Underground) and she takes passengers on the circle line especially on the seaside station.
I have seen some episodes of Underground Ernie, some are okay but some episodes were “eh?!”
The show is supposed to be similar to Thomas & Friends but it didn’t last long as it started in June 2006 to December 2006 with only one season.
