- UPDATED: The long-awaited arrival of Hartley & Monty's first egg of 2024 was met with an unwelcome visit by what was confirmed to be a female anatum peregrine falcon, who boldly entered the nest box and persisted for some time. Eventually the intruder was seen off and she flew back to her home.

Thanks so much for this, SKH--I was watching earlier and trying to figure out exactly what was going on, but you really need the signature SKH interweaving of the two cameras to get the full picture! 🎥🎥
What a bizarre sequence of events; the juvie really couldn't have picked a worse time to roll on up (except unless there were actual chicks in the nest, I suppose). I gasped when I first saw the jesses too; what are the odds of THAT? (I wonder if a) the bird is banded and b) the bands can be read to tell the falconer where she is; I assume she's an escapee because as far as I know any falconer would remove the jesses before intentionally releasing a bird, seems beyond cruel to not do so considering, but I could be wrong on that.) And I'm very curious as to why she jumped in the nest box; maybe it depends on whether she was born in the wild and then captured or whether she was human-raised?
So glad that both H and M came out of it unscathed, and as for the egg, I'm hoping it just rolled where the camera can't see it and will eventually be rolled back into view. Not a very nice postpartum period for poor Hartley! I hope the juvie is recaptured if only to free her from the jesses, or else that they somehow fall off, and she finds somewhere not here to be. (She's clearly very flight capable, so I doubt any lingering injury she was being rehabilitated from, but who knows.)
What an awesome channel….. my favourite birds…. The San Jose falcon project simply brilliant….. lots more please 🎉🍺👍🫵🏻
Yay to go Hartley. Protecting your nest and egg
Thank you so much SKH, this was mentioned at Orange PF Cam. Quite scary for them (and us) It's great to see both cams edited together to get the big picture.
I had to look up meaning of jesses, to do with falconry. :(. Hopefully all will stay settled for Hartley and Monty and first laid beautiful egg gets some company in a day or so..
I feel sad for the youngster, I hope she gets back home ok, she's a gorgeous looking juvie. Monty did a fabulous job defending their nest now for some rest time for the little family. Hartley looked exhausted at the end there.
Agreed, she looked tired. Laid the egg then the juvenile came and she had to chase the juvie away. So much happened in just minutes!
Some experts have said that this was actually an adult male falcon mix, possibly a Peale's falcon. SMH.
@@skhideaways Thanks SK and experts, just looked up Peale's falcon, learning all the time. :) So the brown chest looks like a juvie but that's the colour of the Peale's falcon it seems.
@@skhideaways Wow. If true, a wonder it wasn't (more) seriously aggressive?
The experts have also mentioned that the behavior in the nest box was more akin to bonding than aggression, though Hartley did get a bit so at the end.
This is such an interesting encounter. To your point, the female "intruder" is not aggressive. She has been interacting with people and possibly other falconry birds and is likely not acting in a "purely wild" way. I hope we hear more when the falconer who lost her is located. And I certainly hope she is captured before those jesses get tangled in something.
(Just my opinion, but I hate the idea that these beautiful wild birds are kept for sport. It seems heartless to turn these fiercely wild birds into, well, a pet. And it is not uncommon for them to escape and to die because of the jesses. At least hers is fairly short.)
I am so sorry for what Hartley and Monty had to go through, especially this time of year. I worry about the egg: it's now almost 10:30 pm and no one has been on the egg for some time. I know that enfluffling isn't full time until all the eggs are laid, but this seems a long time to leave an egg unenfluffled.
I also worry about the falconer's bird: I hope she wasn't hurt or killed by Hartley, and I hope her jesses don't get caught on something.
Thank you for pulling this together into a coherent chain of events--I had trouble figuring out what was going on by bouncing between the two cameras. Another great video by SK Hideaways! Bravo!
SKH just sent an update that the juvie female may be a male Peale's falcon. Peale's falcons are the largest subspecies of peregrine, so the male could be as large as Hartley. That puts a completely different spin on the encounter!
@@lynheideman8487Oh wow! Thanks for update!!
A hair-raiser. Hartley & Monty must be petered-out.
And that prospective chick is gonna be traumatized by all the tense ruckus? 😯 Or will maybe hatch with one heckuva fighting spirit!
Let's hear it for Hartley & Monty! Admirably fierce (and smart) protectors. Respect.
Wow, that makes for a stressful Sunday morning (for me). Fascinating and terrifying to watch, I can’t imagine how hard on Hartley & Monty this was … and the falconry bird, Peale adult or Peregrine juvenile, also out of its element and no doubt confused and stressed. Hoping for the best for all of them, and that beautiful egg! ❤Thank you, SK, for capturing this “event” so we can all see how it played out from every angle. 👍
Poor thing is out there lost in the world. She she flew in there like "HELP! HELP! I don't know where I am and there's a bird out there trying to kill me!"
I hope she finds a quiet place to work on that tether, get it off and be free. It seems cruel.
This intruder had been hanging around for quite awhile, screaming at them while they were bonding, trying to get to the nest. Hartley had already chased him off, but you could see she was needing to lay her egg. Hopefully the intruder will get out of there and leave for good. We don’t want fighting in the box now there’s an egg in there. People can be so cruel, falconry should be abolished. This juvie has no idea what was going on, or what danger he was in
Ooooh scary moment but this juvie was very brave.
It is obvious it has been in some kind of captivity, escaped and lost its way, although it stood its ground for a long time it put itself in a very dangerous situation.
Poor Hartley having to deal with that after just laying their egg, Monty tried so hard to protect without getting into a battle to protect Hartley and their egg.
Brilliant teamwork from this pair
Fantastic video SK, thank you from UK 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👋🏻
I'm glad the intruder wasn't aggressive and no-one was injured. It must have been really difficult for Hartley after just laying her egg. Pray the intruder managed to get back to her falconer soon as her jesses could cause problems. Hoping the egg survived being rolled about as we can't see over the.ledge.
That was intense
@07:05 Monty, wow!
Juvie: "Wow, guys,
it's sure good to be free. I just wanna talk, dang. Chill out already! e-chat chat chat"
Edit, March 26, 2024: We now know, per Dr Zeka Glucs, that the visitor was an adult male out of captivity, and who meant no harm.
That was sad to watch. Poor juvenile is lost and hungry. She looked like she was trying to get food from the adults. Being a captive, she probably has no idea how to get food for herself. 😫
Oh my that was stressful to watch! Thank God Hartley is ok.. sweet mama!
@11:48 Hartley, wow!
Wow, what an unusual encounter. I feel bad for them all. I also thought it was a juvie at first but the leg feathers definitely look like an adult’s. I hope the egg is ok. Thank you for this video
Thanks for making this video. I was wondering where Monty was during all of this, but I only looked at the nest box cam. Now I can see the rest of the drama that was unfolding.
I waited till I could watch this on the big screen. Truly incredible turn of events. Must have been nerve wracking to watch live, not knowing the outcome. Great work on your part, SK! When can we expect the ' extended directors cut'?😅😉😍
This is a really bizarre and disturbing thing to happen. I am concerned the intruder is kept for breeding…it’s so odd that it would turn up out of the blue like this…what a puzzle. I hope someone knows something and comes forward. Thank you for the explanation and video. It is a good reminder of the volatility in nature.
Hopefully someone will be able to identify this juvie and perhaps recapture her? I felt bad for all three of them! Am wondering if the Juvie knows how to hunt -- if she's been on her own for very long. Perhaps she was hungry? Definitely confused! Hopefully the egg is okay. Please let us know, SKH, if you find out anything from the experts.
Some experts have said that this was actually an adult male falcon mix, possibly a Peale's falcon. The tether hanging off his leg could prove problematic. Hoping for the best for all as well.
@@skhideawaysThanks so much for the additional information, SKH. I do hope the juvie finds its way back "home" - that tether needs to be removed. 😔 Also hoping it doesn't return to the nest and that the egg is going to be okay. Poor Hartley - what a traumatic experience for her at such a vulnerable time. And for Monty too!
Again, my thanks to you SK, for all your videos and your priceless captions!
This was so stressful to see because you never know if any will be injured! We want Hartley & Monty to be safe along with the egg, but also the juvie. Very brazen juvie act. Very stressful for Hartley, I hope she will be ok and the juvie stays away! Perhaps raised in captivity and escaped?
Exactly. Not used to being around other falcons.
I wonder if she was trying to take over the nest/egg
Well there a situation i never see 😮😮, but in the end all goes well and that what matters❤❤
It seems like she hasn’t been taught about interacting with strangers!
Was watching this earlier in rewind on the stream. I was like "Who's that? is that a falconry bird? What's going on here?" That was crazy. So soon after the egg was laid too 😳
Yes, definitely a falconry bird. Some experts have said that this was actually an adult male falcon mix, possibly a Peale's falcon.
Maybe the intruder was raised alone and has no skills with falcon etiquette 🤷🏼♀️
Will that falcon survive in the wild?
That was really interesting! Thanks SK
I was outside City Hall on Tuesday 3/26/2024 and I heard a call like the intruder bird as 1-2 falcons circled the building. Any updates?
I hope they don’t abandon the nest now. It seems Hartley hasn’t been back since laying egg
Wow listen to Monty kekking
26:26 Why would that juvie seek out this nest location? Don't they understand squeals and squeaks and screeches?😮
Does it have a band on its leg?
Didn't see an ID band, just leather anklets and the one tether.
What does Harley have on her right ankle, dangling.??
Hartley is on the left. The intruder falconry bird is on the right and has jesses (leather straps) and a tether.
Very dramatic. Relieved.
