I'm an intermediate player (high C on a good day). I would love to have a nice chess set like that, but I can't afford it, so I just use plastic chess men with a vinyl roll-up board.

For those who keep recommending box cutters: the intro was inspired by my boyfriend's, Call Me Kevin's, content -- since most people didn't see the clumsiness was exaggerated and left in the video on purpose, I get it: I ain't funny 🤷♀️ And I will not be making comedy skit attempts. Highly intelligent people often struggle with common tasks. They tend to overthink/overcomplicate problems that the average person would easily solve. This is exactly what she did here. Because this was an extraordinary item (due to its high monetary value compared with common chess sets), her high-powered mind, which is accustomed to seek out connections in order to solve problems, assumed the ribbon was a part of an elaborate mechanism to creatively open the box. Most average-minded people would have just pulled the protective covering off.

Being good at chess does not necessarily mean a person is intelligent. Chess skills come with lots of studying, preferably starting at a young age. Your depictions of "High powered" and "average" minds also signal your complete lack of understanding of what intelligence and IQ actually is and how they differ.
Just stop with high IQ thing and Chess. They study chess and play it for more than 20 years... Of course they are good at it, we have for almost 200 years of theory on it! it's not related to the IQ at all. You guys think Hikaru is smarter than Mozart or Einstein, just because he's a GM at chess???

The rule I learned to properly orient the board is, "white to the right." It rhymes.
If you play speed chess with that, you would probably damage it.
I think this is more for looks than anything else. It's too marble-ish. Looks like it's just to sit on a $25000 table in a $10000000 mansion.

Cause it's decoration or for special occasions, for everyday play just use a wooden foldable set, that'll do nicely.
Really a very fine set, a dream in black & white. Only the Rooks could be a bit higher... a Rook should not be smaller than a Knight (but this is a general trend, more than a century old...)
just me or do the squares seem a bit too small...pieces fit too tightly, for 1k would prefer squares to be a bit roomier

I noticed that too. For a grand, I'd expect a bigger board.
The set and the board are beautiful nad all, but... the board is a bit small for this particular set of pieces. The diameter of the pawns should be half of the size of one square, you should be able to place 4 pawns in one square of the board, side by side, no gaps between them.
Sweet board. I got lucky thrift shopping at my local antique stores and found a marble board that weighs probably 40 lbs or more and found these demons vs barbarians ceramic pieces a few weeks later. Altogether about $50 for a completely one of a kind legendary set and i cant even remember the last time i had someone to play with at this point. Stupid pandemic. Not that i was very good anyways, but still fun to play.

I used to have the Lardy chess set from France. I took a quick break from my game at a chess tournament, when I came back the whole set was gone, including my clock. At least they left me the bag. From that moment forward, I always played on a plastic set for public matches. Absolutely beautiful set, Anna. The best for the best.

you can visit Volterra (Tuscany) for Alabaster manufactured goods, there are lot of shops and almost everyone have alabaster chess sets.

Sharp set. I have a fully unique set I found at an estate sale and got for $120. Looked up that it likely cost $2500. The board is 21” and all pieces of mirror, some tinted. The pieces are pewter, one gold one grey. Fantasy style. The detailing in each piece is astounding.
Had to go check... the sculptor is Michael Ricker, a pewter master.

The correct orientation for a chess board is memorised by "white on the right / light on the right" (works in English) not "black on the left". That is a pretty board and set, but the board is too small for those pieces - the end result is too cramped. Squares should be ~25% longer.

I've always assumed that a high chess rating is a sign of exceptional general intelligence; that one couldn't reach the highest levels of the game without being incredibly smart. But now I've watched an IM trying to open a box....

I just bought my first chess set a few days ago for 2700 rupees. Which is approximately 30 dollars. And seeing such wonderful chess sets just makes me feel to work hard in my college life so that I can have many wonderful sets

Exquisite set but the identical black/white squares and pieces would probably strain your eyes like crazy and affect your concentration. Would've been nicer if the squares were Grey.

But as you probably are aware of, stone is not just stone. That is why you are willing to pay more for a diamond then you would pay for a lime stone. ;)
And just like they varies in colour, hardness and clarity, they also varies in weight.
So to say it does not feel as heavy as a stone is almost the same as to say it does not feel as heavy as material.. ;)

I saw a lot of these chess sets in a shop in Venice, they were hand made and OMG. The were between 500 and 2000 euros. Lookes sooo nice
didnt know the chess community was so toxic and belitting that they literally bully someone and get angry for how someone opens a box... it was a joke, and nothing was ruined. yall need to relax.
My first chess set was actually checkers pieces ,but on them were printed images if chess pieces so you could play chess too.
Playing online chess with computer ruins the experience though. There has to be actual board ( I prefer wooden board ) and actual wooden pieces . And of course real human being as opponent and no premove crap . OTB is only way to play real chess, not to mention less opportunity for cheaters.
