Unboxing Mississippi: What It's Like Living in Mississippi

  • Is Mississippi racist?
    Is Mississippi poor?
And is Mississippi still living in the past?
We’re going to answer those tough deep uncomfortable questions and talk about a whole lot more too. So go get yer mammies and yer pappies and yer pas. We’re gonna unbox the state of Mississippi!
The Mississippi River. What a grand gal she is. It’s the 2nd longest river in the country and certainly one of the widest in the world. I mean at the top of the river this thing is 11 miles wide! There’s water in that thing from 31 different states, and even parts of Canada. Along its banks are many major cities, and this waterway has been a critical means of transportation, power, and food for this country since before we were even a country.
1 out of every 4 species of fish is found in this river and its home to 40% of all migratory birds found in the US. It really is an ecological wonder. There’s stories about this river that make for some good reading. Lots of big boats met its bottom and many songs have been written about its muddy waters too.
Today, engineers are constantly battling with this river, creating artificial dams, banks and levees to try and keep the river within its current course. It’s very important to the south, and to the state of Mississippi in particular.
But this area near the river here in Mississippi are just a small part of this state overall. This state has a lot more to explore, and odds are if you moved here, you wouldn’t live anywhere NEAR the Mighty Mississippi. If you’re curious about what Mississippi is like, and are thinking of making this your home, well, then, you need to know all about the Magnolia State. And I think you might be surprised to hear that this state far exceeds whatever stereotypes you’ve heard in the past. I’d bet if you moved here, you might find it’s better than you’d expect, but worse than you would like.
This is Mississippi. You could break this state up into several areas, and each one would have its own culture, economic outlook and outlook on life. Some areas are really bad and some parts of this state are doing really well. It’s an average sized state - about the size of New York, but the population here is only about that of San Antonio. And as we’ll see, the population here is shrinking. We’ll see why soon enough.
But for now, let’s begin our tour of this state here in the northeast part of Mississippi.

As a black woman who's lived here all my life I will say this fairly accurate. I do actually have an education and never had any kids. I have a degree in sociology and have worked in social services for over 10 years now. I started out in early education so I have a good grasp on the social problems that plague our state. It's sad because there's so much potential here. It really could be an awesome place to live.

I think it should also be mentioned that Gulfport and Biloxi saw extreme destruction from Hurricane Katrina's storm surge (worse than the kind of flooding in New Orleans) in 2005, which can be attributed to the decline, blight, poverty, and crime in those areas. The Gulf Coast overall never really recovered from that disaster.

And simply put there's really no other place I'd rather live. Mississippi is a slower pace of life and most of the general population is a very laid back and kind hearted folks. I have a love hate relationship with Mississippi. I loved the folks I worked with when I was at the Stennis Space Center. I loved driving through the country and stopping in the small towns. Cassidy's accent brought back memories. Cities like Bay St. Louis and Ocean Springs are beautiful.
A lot of American culture, especially music, comes from Mississippi.
However, there were some backward things that drove me nuts. I was not a fan of the politics. There was not a lot of opportunity for young folks. Most public schools are poor. There is a reason a lot of their best and brightest don't stick around after they graduate college.
Agree with , it would have been nice to have interviewed folks of color as they make up more than a third of the population.

"backwards" why? because you don't like the politics, you deem mississippians as backwards? tell the peons, oh great one, who made you the gatekeeper of what is backwards and what is forwards?
and in many places of the state, the population of black mississippians far far exceeds "more than a third." why more black mississippians weren't interviewed ought to be a testament to the character of this fellow making this trash. you can't have mississippi without black people.
there's a bit of right in this, "unboxing," but most of it is pompous, stereotypical bullshit. i'll grade this "unboxing" as a d minus, at best, on its accuracy and factuality.

It works like this. Whatever color you are, how well you do is directly related to how much time you spend obsessing about your skin color. If you don't care about it no one else will either. On the other hand, if it's a big deal to you people will pick up on that instantly and it will tend to make them feel uncomfortable. What I just said might offend some but it is 100% true.

A funny tip, us southerners can easily mimic yall's accents better than folks from say New England or anywhere else in our nation. In an acting class I had taken, I learned this. Whenever I took on a role of someone from say England, I'd just reach deeper into my southern accent and then added words and euphemisms unique to your corner of the world - and my English accent was strong and almost natural. Same with Ireland, Scotland and Australia. But I have a hard time mimicking the different southern accents though so I understand. We don't talk all that good cuz our education ain't that good. Honest truth.

What different people contributed to the accent ppl, who have long been in Mississippi speak with? Louisiana said have their particular cell to too. My ears are always tuned in to the differences. I don’t think education is solely responsible for the accents. But I could be wrong.

My grandfather was born and raised in Mississippi. He was born in 1924. He said he would walk by black people hanging from trees and was told not to look at white woman because they used to falsely accuse black male. He was forced to move north because Caucasians were so rough with African Americans. So yeah if your Caucasian I'm sure Mississippi is a very kind place.

Born & Raised in MS. Lived in North MS & South. I like your video. I think the kid you talked to that was about to graduate college had the best perspective on our state. We basically have an older generation (70’s-80’s) of white men who do not want change, they have power, pull and money. When their generation starts dying off is when we may see some positive change for our state. We do have many contracts with large industrial corporations that are bringing lots of jobs to our state and recognition, but no one pays attention because we are just MS. I think everyone should be required to read “Dispatch’s From Pluto” it is a great perspective into the state. Honestly, if you have never lived here, you will never understand it.
